Special Forces Medic-Chapter 580 - 549: Arrogant Woman
Chapter 549: The Arrogant Woman
Perhaps it was because the car’s headlights were too bright, the cat called out twice at this giant object before running away. Restarting the car, Wu Shuang continued on her way, stubbornly trying to dismiss the unsettling feeling from the cat’s appearance. Her mood grew restless, partly due to the encounter, and she pressed the accelerator lower, suddenly bursting out onto this deserted road.
The car suddenly leaped onto the main road, startling the vehicles preparing to cross. Wu Shuang, sitting inside, was also shocked by the sudden bump. If not for her habit of gripping the steering wheel tightly, she might have lost control and caused another traffic accident.
Faced with the curses from the drivers she scared, she knowingly smirked, realizing she might have gotten out to confront someone if the roles were reversed.
A gray-white low wall appeared in front of her, and the police car she had been following was already parked to the side. Wu Shuang got out of her car and walked into the North District’s police station. It was quite lively here; even though it was nearing nine at night, no one had gotten off work yet, and the place was brightly lit. Since when did this place become so diligent?
The North District is a peculiar place, which could be described as both Yanjing’s slum and its academic district. Two extremes occupy each end of the North District, divided by a lake that sets the cultural levels apart, both sides yearning for each other.
From the center of Yanjing, you can take the highway to the slum in the North District, but to the Academic City, you have to take the main road. It’s quite ironic when you think about it.
To get from the slum in the North District to the Academic City, you can only walk, whereas the other side can drive. This setup arose because early plans intended to make both sides educational hubs, but the poor took over most of the land. Bulldozing would leave many homeless, so to avoid causing incidents, the land was preserved.
Squeezing through the onlookers, in the police station’s lobby lay a corpse wrapped in a straw mat, with many people whispering among themselves. Director Zhao, who met her last time, was squatting beside the straw mat, muttering something while more and more onlookers gathered. Wu Shuang found a corner to sit in, not bothering to look for Director Zhao, just listening to people’s discussions, though she hadn’t seen any officers from the City Police Department here.
"Did you hear? The dead person was the lover of that old madam, supposedly a love murder." A woman closest to Wu Shuang nudged another woman next to her with her elbow while knitting, a ball of yarn tucked under one arm. Wu Shuang was quite impressed that she could talk so animatedly while staring at the corpse and skillfully switching knitting needles.
"Is that so?" The woman nudged covered her mouth, giggling. "It’s possible. There are plenty of men involved with that old madam. How could someone like Ah San catch her eye and just lose his life like that?" She laughed again, heartily.
"Excuse me, did you just say Ah San?" Wu Shuang didn’t want to interrupt, but she did hear them mention Ah San.
The knitting woman turned to see a young, beautiful woman, and her gaze immediately turned unfriendly. After scrutinizing Wu Shuang, she rolled her eyes and went back to knitting, making Wu Shuang feel puzzled by the sudden hostility.
"Is the dead person named Ah San?" Wu Shuang patiently asked again, prompting the knitting woman to turn entirely towards her.
"Who are you? You look unfamiliar, like you’re not from around here. Why are you asking about Ah San, are you his lover outside?" The woman spoke without restraint, spitting on Wu Shuang’s face. Wu Shuang took out a tissue from her bag to wipe her face, frowning. Seeing her expression, the woman grew even more aggressive. "Oh, what’s with the act? You think you’re better than everyone else? Didn’t someone still take advantage of you? Now your man is dead, and you want to..."
Wu Shuang couldn’t listen any longer. She shot up from her seat and stepped forward to stand before the woman, towering over her. "Say one more word, and I could sue you for defamation and slander, send you in for a couple of days."
"Oh, oh, oh!" The woman became even more excited, transferring her knitting to the other woman and placing her hands on her hips, ready for a fight. "Sue me? Do you know who I am? Go ahead, sue me. Let me tell you, you shameless woman, my son works at this police station. Do you believe I can have him lock you up for a couple of days?"
"Lock me up? And what’s the reason?" Wu Shuang smiled playfully, looking at the woman.
"Do I need a reason to have my son arrest someone?" the woman arrogantly replied. "Just a word from me, and any charge will do."
"Oh, is that so!" Wu Shuang chuckled softly. "Then please, have your son come out here and arrest me."
The people who were initially watching the corpse now turned around in unison to face them. Compared to watching a dead person, this was more interesting — there’s something to see when living people argue.
As a woman saw more onlookers gathering, she even more defiantly glanced at Wu Shuang. "Just wait, my son is handling a case right now, you’ll have something to handle later."
Wu Shuang smiled; the best way to deal with such a woman is not to say anything. However, the woman didn’t think so. In her eyes, Wu Shuang’s silence was a sign of admitting defeat and fear, prompting her to become even more relentless in her chatter.
"What’s all the noise here? Don’t you know this is the police station?" A person holding a police cap walked in from outside, driving the people surrounding the police station outside while entering the hall. Wu Shuang followed the sound and glanced over; she hadn’t seen this person before. The last time she came with Xiao Sun and the others, there was only Director Zhao, and she hadn’t paid much attention then, thinking that a district police station lacked personnel. Turns out, there were other people.
"Son!" Hearing the voice, the woman started shouting without even turning around. "There’s someone here looking for Ah San, I think she’s his mistress, might even be a suspect, come and take a look."
What? Wu Shuang’s face, which initially had a faint smile, immediately darkened upon hearing the woman’s caller. However, the woman’s shout triggered a series of reactions — the glances directed at Wu Shuang quickly shifted from watching a spectacle to disdainful speculation. How could she have faced such indignity? Wu Shuang raised her eyebrows.
"Who are you? How did you end up here?" The person speaking was the same policeman driving away the crowd, holding the cap and casting round eyes upon Wu Shuang. "I basically know everyone living here, but you’re not from here, who are you?" He asked with suspicion.
"I..."
"Hey!" Another voice interjected, as Director Zhao squeezed through the crowd to get involved after seeing Wu Shuang surrounded. "Wu Squad, why are you here? I was just thinking of calling you; Ah San was found, just lying there." His relaxed tone made it sound as if someone had died here as casually as losing a mouse.
"Hmph!" Wu Shuang snorted coldly and dropped her gaze onto the slack-jawed woman. "I’ve recorded everything you’ve just said, and it will be used as evidence in due course." Upon hearing this, the woman collapsed weakly to the ground, starting to wail.
Ignoring the woman, Wu Shuang walked towards the policeman holding the cap, inspecting him with the same scrutinizing gaze. "Is that woman sitting on the ground your mother?"
The policeman froze, looking at how the director treated this woman so courteously, he hesitated about her identity, worried that misspeaking might cause trouble for himself.
"Is it or isn’t it!" Wu Shuang harshly inquired once more, as the man nodded repeatedly, then shook his head. "Based on what that woman said earlier, I will evaluate your usual behavior. Prepare yourself mentally."
The City Police Department, as Yanjing’s highest police authority, has enforcement rights over various districts’ stations and rights to investigate any unreasonable or unlawful activities.
"Wu Squad, this is a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding," Director Zhao quickly plastered a smile on his face, pulling along the policeman still standing dumbfounded.
"Ah San is dead, what’s the cause?" Unmoved by Director Zhao’s smile, Wu Shuang stepped through the crowd and approached the straw mat. "Unauthorized personnel are forbidden in the agency’s crucial areas; when did this place of law enforcement become a marketplace?" Rarely flaunting her authority, Wu Shuang spoke coldly.
Even if the Northern District is impoverished, government officials still receive national salaries and should provide corresponding returns. Given the current situation, some issues are much more severe than she imagined. Just based on what that woman said, bribery under the table should be quite rampant.
Regarding this realization, Wu Shuang didn’t want to address it now. She would report the issues here and prepare a report for the new director’s directive once back. Quickly shifting focus to the corpse, she took white gloves from her bag to avoid leaving fingerprints.
Upon unveiling the straw mat, she was still shocked by the scene inside. What kind of deep enmity did this person with the nickname Ah San have with others, to die in such a terrible manner?
