Sold to the Capo-Chapter 94: SECRETS THAT LEADS TO DEATH
ADRIANA’S POV
Salvatore was still standing there, looking extremely uncomfortable by the time he had finished talking while I was trying to grasp the implications of what I had just heard from him.
When he noticed that I was silent for too long, he turned around to look at me, frustration etched in his features. "Can you just say something and not just stare at me?" He asked, his tone heavy with frustration.
I rubbed at my face and stood up, having to grip the edge of the table to make sure my legs were steady enough to hold me upright. "I don’t know what to say," I murmured.
He leaned back against the door, crossing his arms, his muscles flexing with each movement. "Maybe let’s start with what you think about what I said. How do you feel about it?"
I shot him a look that bordered just short of annoyance. "I feel mad at you, Salvatore, what you did is beyond incomprehensible and I’m trying...god, I’m trying so hard to understand you, to know what could have pushed you to this, to know how you’re feeling but I just can’t..." I ran a hand through my hair for the umpteenth time in a minute.
With a tired groan, he pushed himself off the door, his arms still crossed around his body. "I already explained , okay?"
"Explained that you’re the snitch..." I shot him a glare. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
He paused at my words, a guilty look crossing his face. "Was. I was. That was why Master LaRosa had asked me to get close to Vincenzo so I could feed him information and for a moment, I did... I did but I stopped because I realized how much Vincenzo was doing for me and I’ve been misleading Master LaRosa but now it seems that he’s getting his information from someone else" He sighed and leveled me with a scrutinizing look.
"I do understand what you said. I just want to know, when will you tell Vincenzo?" I asked, staring at him.
I couldn’t trust him again, not after what he had just revealed and I had no idea if he was still bluffing so it was best to stay at alert until everything went down.
"I’ll tell him when I’m ready!" He snapped, his jaw tight, the sudden whip in his tone making flinch and my gaze darted briefly to the bloody knife laying on the floor.
I could still reach it if I wanted to.
When he traced my gaze and noticed my hesitation, he sighed and cursed under his breath, inching closer to me, his hands gripping the edges of the table in deep thoughts.
"Calm down. I shouldn’t have snapped" He muttered, his tone now a lot more quiet than before. "I can’t tell Vincenzo now but I’ll tell him soon...not now. He’ll kill me"
"He won’t"
Vincenzo wouldn’t do that to him, would he? If Salvatore owned to his crimes, Vincenzo would forgive him.
The look on Salvatore’s face was one of bitter amusement. "Is that what you think?" His tone was condescending like I didn’t know what I was talking about and for a moment, the confident expression my face faltered and my heart began to pound.
"Wㅡwhat does that mean? You’ve been with him for a while and you’ve been helping him, you stopped feeding information to Master LaRosa... He’ll forgive you..." I stammered, my tone unsure now.
He was still gripping the edges of the table, a smirk now on his lips. "You know very little of the mafiosos world" He huffed.
I immediately frowned, wrapping my hands around me. "Well it’s not like I’ve ever seen Vincenzo handle something like this before" I quickly defended myself.
"Maybe I’m not helping Master LaRosa but once upon a time, I was. When you heard it, what was the first thing you thought?" He asked me, waiting for my reply.
I frowned, thinking back to a few minutes ago when he had sat me down to explain everything to me. What had I felt? It was a no brainer for me. "Anger"
He nodded, clicking his fingers. "Bingo, now you’re angry at me..." He paused, waiting to see if I’d understand where he was getting at with the explanation but when I didn’t say anything, he continued. "Multiply that anger by 100, that’s literally how Vincenzo will be mad. He’ll burn with fury, you know why?"
The atmosphere in the room was uncomfortable as I shrugged. "Why?" I whispered.
Salvatore removed his hands from the table and took a step closer to me. "Because once upon a time, he made himself trust me even though he doesn’t like it and once upon a time, I broke that trust without him knowing and for what? Because I once hated Vincenzo. Until I knew him better"
I hitched my breath and nodded, understanding what he was saying. "I understand what you’re saying, Salvatore. He’ll be really mad"
Salvatore’s eyes flashed, his blue eyes darkening. "No, it doesn’t seem that you understand what I’m saying..." his words felt like gravel. "He won’t be mad at me, Adriana..." He hissed.
There was slight pause then he wiped his face. "He’ll fucking kill me. I’m a traitor according to the mafiosos, not to master LaRosa but to Vincenzo’s house, everyone will take me as the enemy, just like you’re thinking right now. You may be calm about me right now but I can see the little gears in your head turning, your eyes darting to the knife that you just used to try to kill me and trust me, I understand" He said without a single space for breathing.
I froze at that. He knew what I was thinking, I was probably not discreet about it anyways. "Can you blame me? You’re not exactly giving me much to work with" I frowned at him, not denying his accusations.
"For now, I just need you to shut up about it, if I’m going to tell Vincenzo then I’m going to end this before he kills me, that’s all I need. Closure before anything happens" He sounded defeated.
Even though I hated myself for it, I walked over to him and raised my chin up, my eyes soft as he looked up at me. "He won’t kill you"
He opened his mouth to say something but I beat him to it knowing that he just wanted to say that I couldn’t guarantee him that and maybe I couldn’t but I was certainly going to give him hope. That was the best I could do. "I give you my word. He may want to kill you but I’ll try. I may not succeed but I promise that I won’t sit back and watch it happen"
He looked skeptical and shook his head. "I don’t need you to fight my battles, Adriana. I broke a rule and I will face the punishment of the Don" He said matter of factly but this time I didn’t say anything to him.
If that was what he thought then so be it.
"If that’s what you want, fine. I just need one thing or won’t it be granted?" I asked, trying to test my luck.
"If it’s something that I can help with then I certainly will try, what do you need help with?" He asked.
"Let me go back, please..." I pleaded.
He straightened up, the usual stoic expression on his face back in place. "Absolutely not"
I felt tempted to flip him the middle finger but instead I restrained, not wanting to piss him off and ruining my chance. "Please, Salvatore, it’s the least you can do"
"No" he said without even thinking about what I said the second time. "I broke his trust once and if you think I’m going to endanger you when he has given me orders then you’re wrong. He rules the family, maybe he doesn’t rule Costa Rica but he certainly rules the family I come from so I am going to obey every word he says and right now you’re a priority and so is this Haven and I will die if I must to protect it so no, next question"
With a huff, I looked down at my feet. "When do I get to see him?"
He squared his shoulders. "After the clash if there turns out to be any, let him make sure it’s fine there before anything. If there’s no clash or he’s able to handle it, you’ll be back there sooner than you know...that’s if you want..." He was watching me silently, gauging my reaction.
The statement made me pause because I had thought about it a lot of times. Did I want to go back to Sicily? I had thought about it when I was here.
"Yes, I do" the words were already tumbling out of my mouth. "For them"
He broke into a small genuine smile. "You’re a real one, Adriana. You’re not scurrying away. We can help them from here, if you’re willing"
Of course I was.
"How?"
He crossed his arms again. "Let’s start by keeping this between us"
