Sold to the Capo-Chapter 65: COMPROMISED PACKAGES
ADRIANA’S POV
I expected him to immediately start asking me weird questions but it was silent in the car as we pulled out of the mansion with two other cars behind us as escorts.
Thinking now, I would most definitely prefer the questions no matter how awkward it would be to this.
What was this? I didn’t know what this was anyway; it was so silent and so awkward in the car. It was like he was avoiding eye contact with me, and the busy road ahead in the city seemed far more interesting than the woman sitting in the backseat, folding her hands and knitting her hands together.
Usually, I would ride in the front seat with him, but the last thing I wanted right now was the close proximity that I was forced to endure, so I tried to put a lot of space between us.
Soon, there was a red light, and Henry pulled to a stop, his hand tapping rhythmically on the steering and his eyes still focused on the red truck in front of us.
"Are you okay back there?" He suddenly asked, looking at me through the mirror, his eyes furrowed as he squinted at me.
I held his gaze through the mirror and I didn’t like the way he seemed to scrutinize me with that simple look. "Yeah, I’m fine...I think it’s just so hot around here..." I forced a smile, rolling down the windows.
His grip on the steering wheel tightened and he tilted his head, his eyes going back to the light as we waited for it to turn green. "Bullshit. It’s 7°c outside, it’s freezing. Just because there’s no snow today doesn’t mean that it’s hot" He huffed
Like I didn’t know that. "I know, Henry, I just feel a little suffocated back here" I muttered under my breath.
The lights turned green and he started driving again, still not looking at me. "This wouldn’t have anything to do with Vincenzo, does it?" He asked, his voice sounding bitter.
My eyes widened slightly, knowing that he wanted to bring it up now but what exactly did he want me to say? "Look, why does this have anything to do with Vincenzo?" I retorted, looking at him finally.
His grip on the steering tightened again and he seemed to be having an internal conflict. "Let’s start with why you were... with him that day"
"I don’t think I owe you an explanation for that, Henry" I reminded him.
"Damn it, Adriana, I’m trying to look out for you, why can’t you just talk to me, hm? Humor me" He said, his voice low and hard.
When I didn’t answer, Henry sent me a glance through the mirror again and this time, it was filled with shock. "Are you attracted to him?"
"No" My answer was a bit too quick.
Something like relief flickered in his eyes before it disappeared almost as immediately. "That’s good"
"Why?"
"You know why" He muttered, sending me a short glance through the mirror.
"I think I do know why and I’m not certain if I still like the fact that the reason still exists. I told you what I thought about it and I thought we were cool about it."
He took a swerve to a more desolate road and frowned. "I’m not a light switch, Adriana. I had feelings for you, and you rejected it. It doesn’t mean that I can just switch off my feelings for you; they were genuine, you know?" He whispered.
I looked out the window, my heart rate spiking up at how eerie the place looked, the only comfort was the two other cars behind us. "What are we doing in this part of the city?"
If he was offended that I didn’t answer his last question, he didn’t show it. "The shipment, we can go to the park from here" He muttered under his breath.
"What is in the shipment?"
He raised a brow but focused on the path ahead that had become more ridden with dirt and overgrown weeds. "Are you sure you wanna know?"
"I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want to"
"Yeah smartass I know but it’s strictly confidential"
I know what he meant by that. Don’t go blab about it to Vincenzo for any reason or he’s going to kill me for telling you something like this that you shouldn’t have known.
"Humor me"
"Drugs"
One word but my heart seemed to stop at that. Vincenzo dealt in drugs too? "You mean like hard...drugs?" I tried to understand what he was telling me.
He scoffed. "Yeah, he’s not a goody shoe if that’s what you’re thinking." The sarcasm in his voice was very noticeable, and it was beginning to grate on my nerves.
"I never said he was a goody goody shoes" I frowned at him.
Glancing back outside the back window, my eyes widened. "Woah, Henry, is this supposed to happen?" I whispered, my voice filled with panic but Henry was still muttering stuff to himself as he accelerated.
"I still don’t get what you would see in him even when you know that he was the one lㅡ." He was ranting, but I quickly cut him off.
"Shut up!" I yelled at him, my eyes still fixed on the back of the car.
"Is that supposed to happen?" I whispered when he shut up.
He looked at the mirror and his eyes widened also. "Shit"
We had two cars behind us and now, the one who was at the tail was missing. It was like it just disappeared off the trail.
"Sir, we can’t find Gustavo and Nero’s car," A voice from the walkie-talkie on the dashboard sounded.
Henry looked more focused on the road so I leaned forward and grabbed it, immediately speaking into it. "Did you see them leave?" My voice was shaking as I looked around our environment; we were surrounded by trees.
There was no one around this place.
"No ma’am, we didn’t see them. We took the turn here, and we thought they were behind us, but they were not. Do we need to turn back?"
I looked at Henry whose jaw was tight as he shook his head. "No, stay on the trail, call the mansion, and inform Justin of this. The package has been compromised." Henry ordered as I held the walkie-talkie for him to talk.
Henry took a quick sweep of the surroundings and he cursed. "Fuck it, we’re heading back now"
I sat back in my chair and pulled out my phone, my fingers trembling as I texted Vincenzo. "Something’s happening, we’re heading back to the mansion now"
"What do I need to do?" I asked, dropping my phone back as I pulled out my gun, my palms becoming sweaty.
"It could be a false alarm," he reminded, even as we made a U-turn to leave this place and head back to the mansion.
I clutched the chair in front of me, my eyes wide as we got in front of the other vehicle again and were now leading.
"What’s going on back there?" Henry asked, his voice raised.
I looked back through the window at the other car, about to say that nothing was wrong, when all of a sudden, there was a deafening explosion, and I screamed.
The car behind us was blown up and behind us was just left smoke and the rubbles of it. Thankfully, we were not too close to it but I somehow knew we were next.
"Holy shit!" Henry shouted as he glanced towards the mirror, his feet stepping incessantly on the accelerator. "Get down!"
My eyes widened as I stared at the burning car behind us which was thrown upside down. My gaze fixed on a small figure trying to climb out of the shattered windows. "There’s someone alive in the crash!" I yelled, hoping that Henry would stop, but he didn’t.
"Adriana, fucking stay down!" He yelled even louder and this time, I obeyed, squeezing myself in between the two seats, crouched down as I covered my head.
The car kept moving jerkily, and I couldn’t see where we were going, but my heart was pounding loudly as I gripped my gun in my hand, the cold metal not doing anything to reassure me now.
"Holy shit...shit..." I heard Henry curse under his breath.
"What?!" I shouted, wanting to see what was happening when all of a sudden, I was thrown to the side as he suddenly took a sharp turn.
"We’re almost at the next road!" He yelled.
I opened my mouth to say something when something hit the car. Henry immediately ducked, his head below the steering even as we continued to move.
They were shooting at us.
Henry was no longer at the wheel; he was crouching down, and the car was dangerously spinning.
My fingers threatened to dig into the seat as I struggled to hold on.
"Hold oㅡ," Henry didn’t get to complete it as we were suddenly flung forward when we hit something, and I hit my head on the glass, my vision instantly blurring.
Smoke.
Something was on fire.
My ear was ringing.
I was still alive but I couldn’t see properly. We had hit a tree but where was Henry? My hands were trembling and I could feel warm blood trickle down my head as I struggled to climb out of the car.
As soon as my hands made contact with the ground as I tried to crawl out, I screamed, the pain from the simple movement making tears fill my eyes.
The sound of crunching leaves made me lull my head to the side to see an unclear figure standing there with some other cloaked people around him.
"Adriana Luisa Rossi... we meet again. Forgive me for my methods, but your husband has left me with no choice," The person said, looking down at my sprawled-out figure.
I couldn’t see his face as I was still disoriented but I knew who I was speaking to.
Master LaRosa.
