Chapter 14: Chapter 14

Kael’s POV

Rebecca straddled my lap, her fingers threading through my hair. Her mouth crashed against mine, teeth dragging hard across my lower lip.

I should have felt something. Anything.

But my mind was somewhere else entirely.

Fenrir snarled in the back of my head. Restless. Angry. His displeasure rolled through me like thunder.

*Wrong. She’s wrong. Not her.*

I tried to ignore him. Tried to focus on Rebecca’s body pressing against mine. Her perfume. Her warmth.

Nothing.

"You seem distracted," Rebecca purred, pulling back. Her voice was playful, teasing. "Did that little Omega upset you?"

I sat up abruptly. My hands dropped from her waist.

"No." The word came out sharper than intended. "She’s not worth being upset over."

Rebecca threw her head back and laughed. Like I’d told the funniest joke in the world.

"We’re not giving up on this game, darling." She shrugged carelessly. "We play until we’re done. When did you become so soft?"

Irritation flared hot in my chest. I grabbed her hips and lifted her off me. Dumped her onto the couch beside me.

"I’m not in the mood today." I stood up, running a hand through my hair. "I have to go see my parents."

Rebecca sighed dramatically. Spread her hands in mock surrender. "I can tell. Fenrir’s been cursing at me for the past twenty minutes." Her eyes dropped to my lap. A smirk curved her lips. "And you’re not even hard."

I didn’t respond. Just grabbed my jacket from the chair.

"Have fun with Mommy and Daddy," she called after me. "Try not to kill anyone."

---

The pack headquarters loomed ahead. I walked through the doors with my signature stride. Confident. Controlled. Every step deliberate.

Father stood across the lobby. Magnus Blood Crown. Alpha King.

He saw me. Gave a rare nod of acknowledgment.

I headed straight for the conference room. The elders and visiting Alphas were already seated. Waiting.

Showtime.

I switched into that other version of myself. Sharp. Polished. Ruthless.

The presentation went flawlessly. Every slide calculated. Every word precise. I commanded the room like I was born for it. Because I was.

By the end, they were eating out of my hand. Contracts were signed without hesitation. Deals sealed.

I could feel Father watching from the corner. His satisfaction radiated through the bond we shared as pack members. Not pride—Magnus Blood Crown didn’t do pride in his sons. But approval. Close enough.

The second the last signature dried, I was out.

I needed a drink. Maybe more than a drink.

Fuck. I needed to blow off steam.

I slid into my car with a heavy sigh. The engine’s familiar roar cut through the silence as I pulled out of the lot.

---

The drive back to the estate felt longer than usual. The weight of the day pressed down on my shoulders like lead.

But the moment I pulled into the driveway, exhaustion gave way to something darker.

Anger.

And then that damn bet flooded back into my brain. The mating ceremony. Her face. Those silver eyes looking up at me.

I’d almost kissed her.

Why hadn’t I?

I wasn’t blind. I’d seen the way her lips parted. The way her breath caught. She’d wanted it.

Should’ve been simple, right?

I shoved the thought away. Killed the engine. Stepped out into the cool night air.

The manor rose before me. Cold stone and colder memories.

Inside, I found Mother in the kitchen.

Selene Blood Crown stood by the counter, pretending to arrange flowers. Her silver hair caught the light. Her posture was perfect, as always.

But I saw it immediately.

A fresh bruise on her arm. Purple spreading beneath her pale skin.

My stomach dropped.

This wasn’t new. This nightmare had haunted me since childhood. But it never got easier to see.

My gaze swept the room. Landed on the living room couch.

Lucian.

My brother lay sprawled across the cushions. His pupils were blown wide. Empty. Vacant. Whatever Wolfsbane he’d taken today had him completely gone.

I walked toward Mother. Stopped in front of her. Studied her face.

"Mom." My voice was tight. Barely controlled. "What happened?"

She forced a smile. The same smile she always used to minimize. To deflect.

"Nothing, sweetheart. I’m fine."

"Mom." Sharper now. "I asked you what happened."

She sighed. Heavy. Defeated. Her eyes dropped to the floor.

"I... I bumped my arm." The lie fell flat. "Come eat something."

Lie after lie after goddamn lie.

"Mom." I softened my voice. Let concern bleed through.

Her gaze flickered to the hallway. Footsteps echoed from somewhere deeper in the house. Getting closer.

"It was an accident," she whispered quickly. "I was protecting your brother."

Then he appeared.

Magnus.

My father stepped into the kitchen like he owned the universe. Which, in his mind, he did.

If evil took human form, he was the perfect specimen. Every toxic trait. Every cruel habit. Every destructive behavior wrapped in expensive clothes and false authority.

His pheromones filled the room. Blood and rust. Suffocating. Oppressive.

I turned to face him. My jaw locked so tight my teeth ached.

Mother’s hand pressed against my clenched fist. Her whisper was desperate. Pleading.

"Please. Let it go."

Our eyes met—mine and Magnus’s. A silent battle of wills. The air grew thick with years of unspoken hatred.

But I was still powerless.

No matter how strong my Alpha abilities had grown. No matter how many fights I’d won in the Pit. No matter how many business deals I’d dominated.

Against him, I was still nothing.

The realization burned like acid.

Without a word, I turned and walked toward my room.

---

The shower was scalding.

I stood under the spray until my skin turned red. Until the steam filled my lungs. Until I couldn’t feel anything but heat.

It didn’t work.

The rage still burned in my veins. Hot and toxic and inescapable.

I dried off. Pulled on clean clothes. Grabbed my keys.

Didn’t say goodbye to anyone.

These walls felt like a prison. Every corner echoed with memories I wanted to erase. I needed to escape. Fresh air. Alcohol. Anything to numb this storm inside me.

Fenrir growled in the depths of my mind. Restless. Matching my agitation.

*Go find her.* 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

The words slithered through my consciousness. Unwanted. Intrusive.

Her.

Aria.

That Silver Moon Omega with the silver eyes and moonflower scent. The one who’d somehow become my fated mate. The one I’d almost kissed and then driven away from like a coward.

*She’s ours,* Fenrir insisted. *Go to her.*

"Shut up." I gritted out, sliding into the driver’s seat. The engine roared to life.

I peeled out of the driveway. Disappeared into the night.
