Chapter 125 - A Deeper Connection
*Kryzen*
The cool breeze of the evening whispered through the columns of the palace as I made my way to the front courtyard. My boots clicked a steady rhythm against the stone pathway, echoing the pounding in my chest. Kai was coming. Briella needed him.
There he was, my brother-in-law, standing with his back to me, gazing up at the stars that began their nightly dance across the darkening sky. At the sound of my approach, he turned. A grin broke across his face like the first light of dawn.
"Kryzen," Kai’s voice was warm, filled with the familial fondness we had come to share.
"Kai," I greeted, stepping into the circle of his open arms and clasping his hand tightly. We shared a moment of silence, allowing the bond of family to bridge the distance and time apart. But the pleasantries couldn’t last.
"Her nightmares are getting worse," I confessed, feeling the weight of concern settle between us. There was no need for pretense. Briella’s well-being was our common cause.
"Stress isn’t good for her, especially now," Kai’s tone shifted, his medical training seeping into his words. "We have to keep her mind at ease."
"Do you think I don’t know that?" I snapped before I could catch myself, the frustration of many restless nights breaking through. I sighed, running a hand through my hair. It was a gesture of weariness I’d become all too familiar with. "I’m sorry, it’s just... It’s been hard. I’ve been staying up, watching over her. Believe me, we’re trying."
Kai clapped a comforting hand on my shoulder, understanding flashing in his eyes. "It’s tough on you both," he said. "But we’ll figure this out together."
I nodded, grateful for his steadfast support. "Together."
"Kai," I started, "there’s something more. Briella has been sleepwalking, and not just wandering occasionally. I found her on the roof, standing at the edge and about to fall over the side."
His brow furrowed slightly, concern etching across his features. "Sleepwalking?" he echoed.
"Almost every night," I admitted, feeling the weight of each occurrence pile upon my chest. "I find her wandering the halls or standing by the window, staring into the darkness as if she sees something calling to her."
Kai nodded slowly, processing the information with a healer’s precision.
“It’s why I’ve been staying up with her,” I continued. “We have a maid sit with her during the day to make sure she doesn’t get hurt. I had to stop her from continuing her duties so she could get some rest.”
"She didn’t tell me it was that bad. When we spoke over the phone, I sensed something off. There is definitely something strange happening here. Hopefully, we can get to the bottom of it. I brought some spells and potions from the valley," he said, reaching into the satchel slung across his body.
A knot of worry unraveled within me at his words. He was able to sense something from a phone call. All of Kai’s training in Celestial Valley’s subtle magics could really make a difference here. The hope that had flickered in meeting him now sparked into a flame. Maybe he held the key to easing Briella’s troubled mind and both of us getting more sleep.
We were interrupted by a soft call. "Kai?"
Briella stood at the threshold of the palace doors, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears of relief. Her arms opened wide as her brother approached. I couldn’t help but smile as they embraced. It was always such a joy to see Briella with any of her family members.
"Thank you for coming," she whispered into his shoulder, her voice cracking with emotion.
"Big sister, you know I’d cross worlds for you," Kai replied, his voice thick with sentiment. He pulled back, holding her at arm’s length to look at her face. His gaze was serious, but a playful smile danced at the corners of his mouth. "And besides," he added with a wink, "it’s an honor to serve my queen."
Her laughter, light and genuine, filled the air. For a moment, the worries of nightmares and sleepwalking faded into the background. Kai’s presence, warm and reassuring, was a balm to our frayed nerves. At that moment, I could almost believe that everything would be alright.
Briella’s laughter had been a rare sound these past weeks, but with her brother here, it echoed through the halls again, lightening the shadows that clung to the corners. I couldn’t help but share in their joy, feeling a weight lift from my shoulders.
"Kai," I said, watching him with gratitude. "Your presence has brought her peace. For that, you have my deepest thanks."
He looked at me, his eyes holding a depth of understanding beyond his years. "We’ll get through this, Kryzen," he replied, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "I will do everything in my power to make sure all three of you get through this."
It wasn’t long before the pleasantries gave way to the gravity of our situation. Kai’s demeanor shifted as he prepared to examine Briella, his brow creased in concentration.
He laid out an array of vials containing swirling mists and herbs that seemed to pulse with an inner light. His fingers moved deftly, weaving spells with practiced ease. The light magic of Celestial Valley was at his command, and he used it to probe the mysteries that plagued my wife.
"Relax, Briella," he instructed gently. "Let the energies flow through you."
Her body slackened, and her breathing evened out. For a moment, there was a serene stillness in the room. Kai’s chants rose softly, harmonizing with the faint thrumming of magic. It was a sight to behold—my warrior queen, vulnerable yet so resilient, her dark hair fanned around her like a raven’s wing.
"Curious..." Kai murmured, his eyes alight with a mixture of concern and fascination. "There’s a resonance within you, Briella. It feels almost like a connection to Embervale itself.”
“That would make sense, wouldn’t it? There’s a reason she was named Luna of Embervale.”
“It is, but this feels different. I believe the recent conflict may have left its mark, not just on the land but on Briella as well."
"Conflict?" Briella’s voice quivered. "But I’ve been here, in the palace..."
"Emotionally, sister. The realm’s pain echoes in your soul," Kai explained. "Time may have passed since the confrontation with Tian and his shadows, but the pain it caused remains."
A chill skittered down my spine, the implications of his words slowly sinking in. Could the turmoil of Embervale seep so deeply into my beloved? The thought was unsettling, but it offered a thread of understanding we’d lacked.
"Is there anything we can do?" My question hung between us, tinged with desperation.
Kai met my gaze, his expression solemn. "We will find a way to ease this burden," he vowed. "For now, the best we can do is keep her calm and safeguard her rest."
"Thank you, Kai," Briella said, reaching for her brother’s hand. "I trust you." Her smile was fragile but genuine, a testament to the bond they shared.
"Anything for you, Bri," he whispered back, squeezing her hand. “I’d like to continue. There may be more I haven’t seen yet.”
Kai continued to murmur incantations. His hands hovered over Briella’s swollen belly, tracing symbols in the air that shimmered with a light reflecting the hues of Embervale’s heart.
"There is an abundance of energy from the realm within you, Briella," Kai finally spoke, breaking the silence that had enveloped us. "It’s more potent than I’ve ever sensed before."
Briella’s hand instinctively moved to her abdomen, eyes wide with wonder and concern. "What does that mean, Kai, for our baby?"
Kai’s gaze was thoughtful, his voice calm. "It suggests a deeper connection to Embervale than we realized—one that may be influencing your dreams. A spiritual journey, a chance for you to entwine your spirit with the land, might grant you clarity and control."
I stiffened at his words. "A journey?" The idea alone set my nerves on edge. "But she’s heavy with child, Kai. Traveling now would be dangerous for both of them."
Kai nodded, understanding etched across his youthful features. "Yes, you’re right, Kryzen. It would be unwise to put her through something like that at this stage. The safest course is to wait until after Briella has given birth, which, by the looks of it," he glanced at Briella’s rounded figure, "could be any day now."
"Then we will wait," I agreed, though impatience gnawed at me. The uncertainty of the situation left a bitter taste in my mouth, but Briella’s well-being was paramount. "We must do everything in our power to shield her and the child until then."
"Then it’s decided," Kai said firmly, breaking the momentary stillness. "I’ll stay until the baby is born and beyond if you need me."
A rush of gratitude swept through me. I reached out, clasping his shoulder in a gesture of brotherly solidarity. "Thank you, Kai. Your presence here means more than you can imagine."
Briella, sitting nearby, gave a small, tired smile, the tension easing from her delicate features. "You always have been the stubborn one, Kai," she teased, her voice laced with affection. "But I’m glad. Truly."
"Nothing could keep me away when my family needs me," Kai replied, his tone light but earnest. He glanced between us, a knowing smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Besides, who else would endure the stubborn moods of a pregnant queen?"
"Hey!" Briella protested, though the glimmer in her eyes betrayed her amusement. "I’ll have you know I am the picture of grace and patience."
"Of course, My Queen," Kai said with a playful bow, the laughter in his voice warming the room like sunlight piercing through clouds.
The exchange lifted my heart. I found myself chuckling along despite the lingering worries that clawed at my mind. Kai’s levity was helping soothe the unease that had settled over the palace since Briella’s nightmares began—an unease that now seemed to lessen with his pledge to stay.
"Rest now, Briella," I urged gently, my hand finding hers, the connection a silent vow of my own. "We’re here. You’re not alone in this."
She nodded, her grip on my hand tightening for a fleeting moment before she released me to settle back against the cushions propped behind her. Her dark wavy hair cascaded around her like a protective veil. I watched as her eyelids fluttered closed, the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest signaling that she had finally succumbed to a much-needed rest.
"Keep watch over her," I whispered to Kai, a hint of pleading woven into my voice. "I trust you."
"I would give my life for her," he replied, his gaze steady and solemn. “You have nothing to worry about with me here. Maybe I’ll see something that wasn’t there before as she dreams.”
As I stepped back, allowing Kai to move closer to Briella’s side, a sense of peace settled over me. With Kai’s help, we might just navigate the treacherous waters that lay ahead. I would weather any storm for Briella, our child, and Embervale. With my brother-in-law at our side, I believed, maybe for the first time since the nightmares began, that we might emerge victorious.
