Chapter 1660: Chapter 102 : Drowning in Responsibility

*Kryzen*

I slumped into the ornate throne, the weight of a crown far heavier than any helm I’d ever donned. As king of Embervale, every sunrise brought a new round of decisions and questions that had me pining for the simplicity of swordplay and stratagems. The small, peace-loving communities under my charge practiced their unique magics with an ease I envied. For me, each day was a battle against exhaustion.

"Your Majesty?" A voice cut through my heavy thoughts. I raised my eyes to meet those of King Rhys, a seasoned ruler whose presence in my court was both an honor and a stark reminder of my rawness to this role. I had spent my youth growing up under his rule, learning from him, and admiring him.

"King Rhys," I greeted him, rising to my feet. “It’s so good to see you, Your Majesty.”

“And you, Kryzen, or should I say Alpha Kryzen? It is good to see you, son.”

“Kryzen, I– Oh, I am so sorry to interrupt.” Briella smiled as she entered the throne room. I took a moment to appreciate her beauty. She looked absolutely stunning in a bright dress that perfectly matched her eyes. I couldn’t wait to take it off of her later.

“Have you seen my mate, Briella?” I asked King Rhys.

“I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure yet. It is very nice to see you again, Briella Black, Luna of Embervale.”

“And it is very nice to see you, King Rhys Crimson,” my mate said with a smile as she approached. She threaded her arm through mine and gave my arm a squeeze, offering support the way she always did. I knew I could lean on her without a doubt, but I didn’t want to lean too much and risk the both of us crumbling under the pressure.

“How are you handling things?" King Rhys asked. "I’m sure this is a big transition for you."

"It’s a lot. I wasn’t trained for this the way you were, the way Roy has been. Your advice would be a balm to my weary mind."

He approached, his gait steady and sure. I knew it came from years of experience. Rhys was a ruler all should emulate in both politics and relationships. His love for his wife, Saoirse, and his children was enviable. I always hoped I would find something like he had one day. With Briella, I knew that I had.

"Kryzen, you’ve taken on the mantle of a king," he said, a warm smile creasing his face. "It’s a task that can raze even the mightiest warriors to their knees. I know from experience just how fierce you are on the battlefield.” He winked, earning a chuckle from both of us. “But remember, a true leader is not just a commander but a steward of his people’s hearts."

Briella, who stood by my side, nodded in agreement, her bright green eyes reflecting the gravity of his words. She intertwined her fingers with mine and gave me another squeeze.

"Yes," she added, her voice a mix of strength and warmth. "The people’s trust is the most potent magic we wield."

"Listen to her, Kryzen," Rhys advised, casting an appreciative glance at Briella. "The empathy she speaks of will be your guiding star through the darkest nights of rule. Listen to her always. I have found that a mate can be one of the most cunning creatures in existence. We’d do well to always follow their advice." He winked at Briella, who laughed outright this time.

"Empathy and..." I hesitated, searching for the word that eluded me.

"Balance," King Rhys finished for me. "Yes, balance the needs of many with the will of one, and you will steer this realm to prosperity."

"Sounds like a dance more intricate than any ballroom has seen," Briella quipped, lightening the air with her humor.

"Yet it is one you are both well equipped to perform," Rhys assured us. "Even if you were not raised to rule, I know you, Kryzen. And I’ve heard stories of you, Briella. The two of you were born to rule, even if you were not raised for it. You will make mistakes, I assure you. No one is perfect. It’s about how you handle them and what you put first. Never forget that the joy of your people will be the true measure of your reign."

"Thank you, King Rhys," I said, my spirits buoyed by his counsel. "Your wisdom is more than I could have asked for. You’ve given me a lot to think about."

"Then my visit has served its purpose." He bowed slightly. “Do you mind if I steal your mate away for just a little while, Luna Briella? I was hoping to get a chance to speak with him and see your growing kingdom. Why not kill two birds with one stone and do both at the same time?”

“By all means, King Rhys. Enjoy your visit, both of you.”

I turned to Briella before following King Rhys and placed a soft kiss on her lips. “Thank you, my love.”

“You are most welcome, my king.”

After taking him through the capital and showing him all the construction, I led King Rhys through the winding corridors of our newly constructed palace. We arrived at a private chamber, away from the ears of the court. I closed the door behind us with a soft click. The room was adorned with tapestries depicting battles of old, making the weight of kingship feel all the more real.

"Kryzen," Rhys began, his voice carrying the gravitas that only years of rule could bestow, "you seem troubled.

“I’m tired,” I admitted. “I know you offered advice for us, but I was hoping for a bit more. I’m struggling.”

“This is no easy task, Kryzen, no matter if you were trained to rule or not. It’s a constant uphill battle, but I promise you, it is worth it in the end.”

“I’m just trying to find my balance.”

“A king’s strength lies not solely in the power he wields but in the compassion he harbors." He placed a firm hand on my shoulder, his gaze sharp yet kind. "Never forget to balance these two. It is okay to be stern, but let empathy guide your sternness."

I nodded, absorbing his words. It was one thing to hear such advice. It was another to live it.

"And remember," he continued, "to seek counsel. No king can stand alone. In moments of doubt or decision, reach out. Even kings need help. And it doesn’t have to be me. Diverse viewpoints will only help to serve you better. But know that I am always available to you. You only need to call, Kryzen."

"Thank you," I said quietly, the simplicity of his advice resonating within me. "I’ll keep that close to heart."

“I’m proud of you, Kryzen Stormfall. You have grown into quite the young man. I know you will be a strong, formidable leader. Saoirse sends her love.”

“Tell her I hope to see her soon. It’s been too long.”

“Yes, it has. I’m sure she’ll find an excuse to come out here soon if only to meet your beautiful mate.”

“Thank you, sir. Travel safely on your way home.”

"My time here ends, but remember, Embervale’s fate rests gently in your capable hands."

With a parting nod, King Rhys left, his presence lingering long after he’d gone. Alone, I sank into the high-backed chair near the hearth. Could I really do this? My mind raced back to days when I was merely General Stormfall’s son, where command and tactics were my only concerns. Now the lives of an entire realm lay in my untested hands.

I had never envisioned leading a pack, much less ruling a kingdom. Yet here I was, draped in a mantle too large for my frame, sitting on a throne that seemed to dwarf me. The idea of being an Alpha, a king, was as foreign to me as the stars to the sea.

"Are you ready?" I whispered into the quiet room, half-expecting the shadows to answer. But there was only silence—a silence that somehow bolstered my resolve. If nothing else, I would learn. For Embervale, Briella, and the legacy that unfolded before me, I would rise to what was required. I had to.

After another long day, I made my way back to my suite, where my mate waited. The balmy night air caressed my skin as I stepped onto the balcony, the stones cool beneath my bare feet. Briella was already there, her silhouette framed against the backdrop of our burgeoning capital.

"Look at it all," she whispered, her voice tinged with wonder. Her gaze swept over the scaffoldings and half-erected structures that punctuated the landscape. "It’s growing so fast."

I leaned on the balustrade beside her, allowing myself a moment to marvel at the sight. It was true. Every day, the capital stretched further toward completion like a living thing reaching for maturity. "It is," I agreed, feeling a swell of pride mixed with an ever-present undertone of apprehension.

"I feel like we’re so lucky, Kryzen." Briella’s hand found mine, her touch grounding. "Everything’s just falling into place. We haven’t had to struggle for advisers or workers. They’ve come to us, ready to build our future."

She was right. We had been given much, but the weight of responsibility that came with such gifts was heavy on my mind.

"Definitely fortunate," I managed to say, my voice barely above a whisper.

The chill of the evening air brushed against my skin, but Briella’s warmth was soothing against it. Her hand, small yet fierce in its grip, held mine with a strength that belied her petite frame. I looked down at our interlocked fingers, feeling the weight of the crown on my head. It was not just a circle of metal. It was a symbol of the lives entrusted to me.

"We will have to become leaders that are worthy," I said, the words tumbling from my lips with a solemnity that mirrored the resolve forming within me. "And I believe you’re already on that path, Briella."

She glanced up at me, her bright green eyes reflecting the moonlight and the quiet confidence that always seemed to dance within them. The corners of her mouth twitched upward in a smile that could light the darkest of nights. "We’ll do it together," she said. Her voice was soft but sure.

"Yes." A thought flickered in my mind like a spark ready to ignite. "You know, once the capital is complete, we should host a ball. We could have a grand celebration for all the people who have worked so tirelessly. It will be a ball for the people as a gesture of our gratitude."

"Really?" Her eyes widened, the idea taking hold as she envisioned it. "That’s a great idea, Kryzen. Everyone coming together would be wonderful."

"Then it’s settled," I declared, the decision setting in stone as easily as if it had been whispered by fate itself. "A ball to welcome them into the heart of Embervale to show that their king and queen, the Alpha and Luna of the realm, stand with them."

Briella’s laughter, free and unguarded, filled the night, mingling with the promise of festivities yet to come. At that moment, even with the burden of leadership heavy on our shoulders, the future seemed alight with possibility.
