Sold as the Alpha King's Breeder-Chapter 1605 - 47 : A Final Goodbye
*Briella*
The clash of fists and fur had ceased, leaving only a ringing silence in their wake. I stood motionless at Kryzen’s side as I watched Drius retreat in defeat. He emerged from my home, beaten and bruised, with only a small bag of belongings.
I stepped forward intending to apologize and ask him to please understand. Drius clenched his jaw, a mixture of pain and regret flickering across his hazel eyes. He faced the forest and paused, his back still turned to us. Without a glance back, he shifted into his wolf form before disappearing into the night.
My eyes followed his retreating form, watching my best friend walk away from me. It felt like a physical pain in my chest as if my heart was being ripped out. This was a person I considered family, and now they were leaving me behind without a word.
I glanced at Kryzen, unsure how to put what I was feeling into words. He simply squeezed my hand and nodded at me. Despite the turmoil in my chest, I shifted into my wolf form and took off after him.
I ran through the forest at full speed, my wolf form blending seamlessly with the shadows of the night. My heart pounded in my chest as I tried to catch up to Drius, but he was too quick for me.
I called out his name, hoping to get him to stop and talk to me, but he ignored me. He was determined to leave, and I couldn’t blame him. I had betrayed him in the worst way possible.
I pushed myself harder, trying to catch up to Drius before he disappeared completely from my life. But no matter how fast I ran, he always seemed just out of reach.
I finally reached him at the crest of a hill, far enough from the valley that its lush greenery had become a mere whisper on the horizon. My lungs heaved with the effort, and my legs threatened to buckle beneath me. I grasped his arm, forcing him to turn and face me.
"Drius?" I gasped out, my breaths ragged. "You’d really leave like this? Just take off without even so much as looking at me? Without saying goodbye at all?”
He shook off my hand, his hazel eyes darkening as they met mine. "And you, chasing after me like this! Have you no thought for your safety?" Drius’ voice was sharp, laced with concern and frustration. "Dark forces roam these lands, Briella. You know that. What if something had happened to you?"
I planted my feet firmly on the ground, standing my ground despite the tremble in my limbs. "If it meant catching up to you, it would’ve been worth it," I declared, my words echoing the fierceness in my heart. The thought of losing him to the shadows that crept beyond our realm was unbearable. The thought of losing him at all was painful.
Drius’ expression softened. For a moment, hope flickered there. "Briella, do you really mean that?" His voice was quieter now, hesitant. "Tell me... tell me you feel this between us. Tell me you want this." He took a step closer, his presence a familiar comfort.
The air between us felt charged, heavy with years of unspoken words and shared memories. "Drius, I..." I trailed off, my mind a storm of emotions.
"You can still come with me," he urged gently, reaching out as if to bridge the gap not only between us but between our choices. "Come home, where you’ll be safe from all of this, from Kryzen. I can protect you and take care of you. Please, Briella."
A knot tightened in my stomach at the mention of Kryzen’s name. The image of his intense gray eyes and the pain etched onto his features flashed before me.
"I... I can’t leave Kryzen," I admitted, the words tumbling out in a rush.
“Why not? He’s been nothing but trouble, Briella. We don’t need him. You don’t need him, not if we have each other.”
He stepped forward, hands cupping my face as hope flooded his eyes. I hated to squash it, but I needed to. This wasn’t what I wanted. My heart belonged to Kryzen.
"I don’t... I only see you as a friend, Drius, my very best friend, my brother. That will never change, I promise you." The truth of my feelings laid bare, I searched his face for understanding, for acceptance. “But, I cannot leave Kryzen, Drius. I cannot choose you.”
Pain flashed across Drius’ face, and he turned from me, his shoulders tense as though bracing against an unseen blow. Without thinking, my hand shot out, fingers curling around the firm muscle of his arm to hold him in place.
"Please, don’t do this," I pleaded, my voice barely more than a whisper carried away by the rustling leaves. "I want... I need you in my life, Drius. I always will. I love you, Drius, just not in the way you wish." My grip tightened, conveying the fierce love I felt for him, the kind that only grew stronger with time and trials.
He didn’t move at first, his form rigid under my touch. But then his body slumped, a silent surrender to the emotions we were both grappling with. He turned back to me, eyes dark pools of hurt that made my heart ache.
"Then answer me this one thing, Briella," he said, the usual warmth of his voice replaced by a somber tone. His gaze pierced through me, searching for truths I had hidden even from myself. "Do you love him? Do you love Kryzen?"
The question hung between us like a delicate crystal about to shatter. Heat crept up my neck, staining my cheeks with the color of the blooms that grew wild in our valley. In that instant, I felt laid bare before him, vulnerable and exposed.
"Look at me, Drius," I managed to say, fighting past the lump forming in my throat. My confession needed to be as real and raw as the emotion that compelled it. "Yes, I love him. He is... I think he’s my fated mate."
My admission echoed around us, a testament to the tangled web of fate and choice that bound us all together. There was no taking back the words now, no pretending they hadn’t been spoken. They were the truth—a truth that changed everything and nothing all at once.
Drius’ eyes searched the forest floor, his jaw clenching in a silent struggle against the pain etched deep within. I watched him wrestle with his feelings, the same way the wind wrestles with the leaves, fierce but aimless. When he finally looked up at me, there was a resolute glint in his hazel eyes that hadn’t been there before.
"Briella," he began, his voice steady despite the turmoil I knew raged inside him, "I’m not going anywhere. Well, I am leaving the valley, but I’ll be here for you always as your best friend and brother. I don’t want to lose you either."
The determination in his words wrapped around me like a protective cloak. Moving closer, I wrapped my arms around him in an embrace that spoke of years of shared laughter and heartache, of adventures taken and dreams woven together.
Drius’ gaze held mine, searching, seeking. A thousand unspoken conversations danced in the space between us. He nodded slowly, the corners of his mouth lifting in a sad smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
"That’s how it shall be," he said softly, the weight of our shared past pressing down upon us both. "Best friends and siblings of the heart, forever more."
"Thank you," I murmured into his shoulder, feeling the tension in his muscles slowly ebb away. "That means everything to me, Drius."
He returned the hug with equal fervor, making me believe in the bond that had to connect us. It was the bond my mother had spoken about since I was a child. Feeling mate bonds was nearly unheard of, but my mother would be able to see it for us.
For a fleeting moment, it felt as if nothing else existed—no dark plagues, no complicated love, just two souls clinging to the familiarity of friendship in a world that was constantly changing.
As we pulled away, Drius’ lips brushed the top of my head in a brotherly gesture that brought a bittersweet ache to my chest. But the moment shattered when he suddenly tensed, his body rigid as if struck by an unseen force. I glanced up at him, confused, then followed his gaze over my shoulder.
My heart stopped. Kryzen stood at the edge of the clearing, his gray eyes wide and filled with a hurt so profound it seemed to crack the very air between us. His expression, a mix of shock and betrayal, cut through me sharper than any blade. I couldn’t breathe or move. I could only stare at him, wishing for words that would bridge the chasm his presence had opened.
"Kryzen," I whispered, the name barely escaping my lips before it was swept away by the wind.
Kryzen’s back was already turning, his tall form a shadow retreating into the embrace of the ancient trees. My voice broke through the silence that had fallen like a heavy shroud over the clearing.
"Kryzen, wait!" The words erupted from me, desperate and raw, but he didn’t stop. His long strides carried him away, each step widening the gulf between us.
Panic rose within me as I took a step forward, my hand outstretched toward the space where he had just stood. I turned to Drius, my eyes searching his face for some kind of guidance. His hazel gaze held mine, and there was a sadness in them that mirrored the ache in my own heart.
"Go," he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. A sad smile curved his lips, the gesture filled with resignation and an understanding that reached beyond words. "Go after him, Briella."
I hesitated, torn between the two people who mattered most to me. But the urgency in Drius’ eyes propelled me forward. My feet moved of their own accord, carrying me toward the path Kryzen had taken.
"Thank you, Drius," I called over my shoulder, not daring to look back for fear of losing momentum. The forest closed around me as I ran, branches and leaves blurring in my peripheral vision.
"Kryzen!" My voice strained, trying to bridge the distance with sound alone. Ahead, I could see glimpses of him moving with a grace that spoke of his warrior’s strength, his figure becoming one with the evening’s shadows.
"Please!" The plea was a breathless whisper now, my lungs burning with the effort of keeping pace. Yet still, I pushed on, driven by the fierce love that refused to let me give up on him—on us.
"Kryzen, listen to me!" My footfalls were muffled by the carpet of fallen leaves. I prayed they would be swift enough to catch him before it was too late.
