Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse-Chapter 380: Under Investigation
Chapter 380: Chapter 380: Under Investigation
Lu Ruisheng asked the base staff members to come into the house.
Gu Pan saw strangers arriving, so she quickly went into the bedroom and stored everything she did not want others to see into the Space—weapons included.
One older female staff with a somewhat authoritative demeanor spoke to Lu Ruisheng, slightly hesitant, "We are from the base investigation unit. Someone has reported Base Chief Lu for favoritism. We require your presence at the base for an investigation."
After finishing speaking, she added, "Don’t worry too much, it’s just formal questioning to confirm there are no issues, then you can return. We have to follow this protocol."
Lu Ruisheng looked at Gu Pan, "Let’s go," as he wasn’t worried because he had nothing to hide, and since they were being polite, cooperating with them wouldn’t be a big deal.
Gu Pan felt the same; the base owed them quite a bit for their contributions, and they had not violated any laws. She nodded, "Alright."
Then, the authoritative female staff member informed Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan, "As per the protocol, we need to take photos as evidence in your home."
Gu Pan wasn’t worried either; everything sensitive had been stored, and she was fine with them seeing the rest. After all, her father-in-law was the Base Chief, and they didn’t want to add to the base’s burdens.
Then a younger staff member began taking photographs for evidence in their home.
After the photographs were taken, the authoritative female asked Lu Ruisheng, "Where are your quails?"
Gu Pan could tell that the person who had reported them knew quite a bit about their home, even down to the quails. She responded, "My own things, I’ll raise them wherever I want."
A young male staff member with an unfriendly tone remarked, "Those are rare birds; think carefully before answering."
Lu Ruisheng’s eyes took on a chilly look, "Do you not know that the base’s quail breeding eggs were provided by us?"
The young male staff member had heard about it, that it was the Base Chief’s son who had secured them, but he was insistent, "Now that they are rare creatures, whatever you found should be handed over to the base, keeping them for yourselves privately hinders the base’s development."
Gu Pan chuckled, "That’s an interesting statement. What rules does the base have? Do all supplies belong to the base?"
The young male staff member fell silent.
The authoritative female then apologized to Gu Pan, "Our new staff member is not familiar with the protocol. Please don’t be offended. There was a direct report to the bureau, making it unavoidable for you to clarify things in person, which could be detrimental to you as well. We’re just following procedure, so please understand."
Seeing that the leader was somewhat reasonable, Gu Pan didn’t make it difficult, "Let’s go."
This trip had to be made to clear things up, not letting anyone make false accusations lightly—of course, she was even more interested in seeing who had reported them, preventing potential backstabbings in the future.
Moreover, she needed to see if it involved Lu Jianguo’s workplace rivals. If so, they had to support him; her family couldn’t be bullied.
They followed the investigative team out and had just reached the door when Guo Gang, Squad Leader Fang, Cheng Yang, and Lu Xuerong all came out.
Squad Leader Fang stepped forward, "I don’t understand what evidence the investigation team has to take our people away just like that."
Meng Meng had seen Gu Pan returning and came to report about the quails, but hearing someone was taking them away for investigation at the doorway, she hurried back to fetch her father and their own people.
The authoritative female sensed a killing intent from the several individuals who had been with the base since its foundation—this sense of aura rarely manifested so strongly, making them shiver involuntarily.
She responded to Squad Leader Fang, "We’ve only received a report, and need to bring your comrades for an investigation. Once cleared, they will immediately return, no need for our old comrades to worry."
Guo Gang, having been in the Black Boxing Club, had a more terrifying demeanor. He warned the female leader, "I hope you aren’t scheming anything inside, or you won’t be able to bear the consequences."
The young male staff member, though scared, felt stifled. He was part of the investigative team, which usually commanded some respect, but these people’s attitude was so poor, how could he swallow this insult.
He questioned Guo Gang, "What do you mean? We are base personnel, are you threatening us?"
Guo Gang did not deny it, "Yes, so be careful."
The young male staff member wanted to speak further but was stopped by the female leader, "Little Wang, shut up."
She knew they were investigating Base Chief Lu’s son, and she was well aware of his notoriety. There was no hard evidence now, and even if there were, his background was not something they could afford to offend. She had always been cautious, but her subordinate truly lacked tact and would need a severe reprimand once back.
Had there not been a ministerial report directly complaining about the person daring to confront them, she’d never willingly wade into this mire.
The base had regulations mandating separate investigations for such reports, hence they had to follow procedures and now had to take Base Chief Lu’s son and daughter-in-law for confrontation and scrutiny, her headache was immense.
At this moment, Gu Pan assured Squad Leader Fang, "Don’t worry, Squad Leader Fang, we haven’t done anything guilty, we have nothing to fear, let’s go see the situation."
Squad Leader Fang, still unconcerned for them, "Alright, just take care of yourselves."
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng agreed and followed the investigative team into a van labeled ’Base Inspection’.
They soon arrived at the place for scrutiny, and upon entering the investigation room, seeing the informant—Gu Pan was genuinely surprised—it was Shen Qiu, the man with a leg injury they had saved during the storm.
If it had been his wife Ma Jiahong, Gu Pan might not have been as shocked because Shen Qiu had always been extremely submissive and grateful, whereas his wife had seemed a bit covetous back then, but it wasn’t certain whether it was his own act or something he had conspired with his wife. In any case, this man was no good.
Lu Ruisheng, too, looked perplexed, and couldn’t help but ask, "Shen Qiu, you reported us?"
Shen Qiu appeared a bit awkward, but quickly composed himself, "Yes, it’s me. I’m deeply grateful for your saving me that day, but it’s because I’ve visited your home that I learned so many of your secrets. In this apocalypse, everyone is struggling to survive, yet you misuse your status to twist the law for personal gain, indulging in luxuries. Your house has quail, a generator, you’re able to generate electricity and grow vegetables privately; aren’t these results of Base Chief Lu’s favoritism?"
Gu Pan laughed, "I really didn’t expect to have saved an ingrate. Yes, our house has quails, a generator, and we’ve never hidden them. We’ve always used our generator openly, fearing no one’s eyes. My husband and I are Scavengers; whatever we bring back is due to our own efforts. What right do you have to say these are objects of favoritism? What evidence do you have?"
Shen Qiu spoke self-righteously, "Aren’t you just using the Scavenger status as a cover to let your father-in-law, the Base Chief, misappropriate the base’s public resources? These things, rightfully belonging to everyone at base, have been appropriated for your own use. As a base resident, I have the right to report you."
