Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse-Chapter 362: Torrential Rain
Chapter 362: Chapter 362: Torrential Rain
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had studied the topography of this area. The location of Entertainment City was connected to the position of the Underground City in the base and was the highest, with the best drainage in the entire area. In the opposite direction from them, there was a row of semi-underground houses which was also for safety reasons; in case of danger, at least their own people could save their lives.
In the apocalypse, it was impossible to play the Holy Mother—no one could protect everyone. It was already very good if your own people were safe.
The next day, the downpour was so heavy that it was difficult to go outside. The visibility range did not exceed two meters, and it was impossible to see the outside conditions. Even though it was daytime, the sky was so gloomy that it wasn’t much better than night.
Lu Jianguo called them in the evening, saying that he would be staying at his unit these few days, and asked them to be careful, assuring that if any disaster occurred, he would have someone come to pick them up immediately.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng also told Lu Jianguo to be careful, not to venture out, and to call them if anything happened.
After hanging up the phone, the two of them checked the house again and there were no leakage problems for the time being.
Afterward, they went to check on several neighbors’ houses, which were all quite safe.
The base’s broadcast also started: "Residents of No.7 Base, residents of No.7 Base, a torrential rainstorm is upon us, everyone must avoid going out, be careful of your safety. The Protein Worms have been successfully cultivated at the base, and we will periodically deliver them to everyone..."
Hearing the term "Protein Worm," Gu Pan suddenly regretted why she had previously told the neighbors they were maggots? It would have been better to describe them as worms.
Because she was the one who originally suggested to the base the idea of raising maggots, so in her mind, these creatures were maggots. Now, how good was this term from the base?
Although when everyone saw the worms, they would be reminded of the maggots in dry toilets, it still felt different.
But things were as they were now, and there was no point in agonizing over it.
Gu Pan and the others were also very busy; a few days ago, every household had brought in a lot of soil, and now they were all cultivating quick-growing vegetables like sweet potatoes and algae. One couldn’t have too much of a food supply.
They used the generator for a longer time each day, because the plants and animals at home needed light. They had plenty of oil in their Space, although some of it was unrefined and could not be used, there was still enough gasoline and diesel. They even got so much from Gu Ci a few days ago.
The days spent at home had begun again, how to describe this feeling? Familiar, but not likable. However, there was no helping it.
The only good thing now was that all companions were present, and they all lived together, so if there was any danger, they could all move at a moment’s notice.
In the following days, the rain kept pouring intensely; many homes began to experience issues with water leaking through their walls, including some spots Gu Pan and the others hadn’t considered before, such as around windows or cracks in the walls.
Gu Pan had various materials in her Space, so it was easier for them to remedy the situation, plus with Lu Ruisheng’s expertise, the problems on their side were quickly resolved.
But it was not so easy for other people; in the apartment buildings, many homes had windows leaking water, gushing down like from a waterfall. And the base was unable to conduct repairs because the rain was now too intense to go outside—unlike any torrential rain they had seen before, so powerful that being out in it felt like being blasted by a hose turned to its maximum flow, like undergoing a form of punishment.
Although cars would keep them safe, once out, if the car got stuck in a water-filled pothole, there would be no escape and no way to help oneself.
Even the best drainage systems at the base were no longer able to cope, and many places began to suffer from flooding; potholes on the roads worsened, turning even the smallest indentation into a large water-filled pit.
People ventured out only with much caution, carrying metal barrels or basins for protection, as stepping into a pothole could easily lead to drowning. Hence, no one dared to venture out rashly.
Gu Pan and the others were unsure if this flooding was related to a rise in the water table, but for now, they could only wait for news from the base, because the base’s information was always the most timely and accurate.
The base’s broadcast had previously promised regular deliveries of Protein Worms, but now that was impossible because it was simply too dangerous to go outside.
Therefore, the broadcast sounded again: "Residents of No.7 Base, residents of No.7 Base, due to the severe rainstorm, the base’s maintenance trucks and supply vehicles are temporarily unable to go out. We ask that residents do what they can to help themselves. We must engage the spirit of mutual aid, and the base is actively looking for solutions. The base won’t abandon its people, so as soon as we have an appropriate method, we will deliver supplies to everyone at the earliest opportunity."
The broadcast repeated continuously, and Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng just sighed, not knowing what to say.
No one had anticipated that the rain could fall so heavily. The biggest rainstorms before the apocalypse were manageable, but now it was truly impossible to go out—going out felt like one could be washed to death by the rain.
And with such rain, even the best roads would be destroyed.
There was a low spot in Gu Pan’s yard that now might be about half a meter deep, wondering how it would fare if the rain continued to fall endlessly.
The fences had already fallen over, and many places were submerged by the water. Only half of the gate was still standing; it was a mystery how it remained upright. Outside, there were omnipresent potential pitfalls filled with water, darkly concealed and possibly several meters deep.
At first, everyone thought having enough food and drink would suffice to just stay at home, but now fear had set in.
Gu Pan was worried about the quails’ coop getting damaged, and together with Lu Ruisheng, moved the quails into a container house to keep them. They moved back to the first floor of the villa to live; it was a proper house, well fortified. The windows and everything else were more soundproof, and with two layers added to the roof, the sound of rain hitting it was somewhat reduced, which made living there more comfortable.
The container houses were noisy under the rain, and their small windows made it unpleasant to stay there in such weather.
Moreover, the container houses had hidden dangers; they were now tilting slightly. Water that seeped in during the initial setup had caused an imbalance at the four corners. Fortunately, they had chosen a higher area of the yard, which had a lower risk of getting flooded temporarily.
The neighbors did the same, moving back to the first floor of the villas. The container houses were now largely abandoned, only occasionally used for group meals.
Currently, except for Feng Zhekai, Duan Shumei, and Fang Lanlan who were still at the unit, everyone else was at home.
These people had no worries about food, clothing, or other necessities, and they had tablets to watch movies and TV shows. Although they had seen most of them many times, it was still entertainment, which few people possessed now.
However, such heavy rain was frightening, as if it could soak through the house at any time.
The concrete steps under the eaves had been eroded into deep gullies. Luckily, their houses were surrounded by high concrete platforms, not soil, otherwise it felt as if even the foundations could be exposed by the erosion.
After the hail incident, they had reinforced their roofs very well, with double layers, so for the time being, there were no worries about the roof collapsing due to a short-term downpour.
However, leaking had become the norm at the base. Lu Jianguo called last night, saying that their office was leaking too. Although not on the top floor, the windows leaked so badly they couldn’t be stopped, so they had placed folding beds in the corridor to sleep. Despite the hardships, it wasn’t a big deal.
