Chapter 70: Phase Change

With the Kobold Mage dead, Jax wondered if he could take a breath to relax. Everything had been so hectic, after all. But the Kobold Boss broke through his restraints again, using his axes to cut through the threads.

Jax barely had time to bring out his healing potion and drink it. Immediately, a refreshing wave of energy filled his body, and his wound began to itch as it healed.

There was no numbing agent in this potion, so he could feel every wriggling sensation that came with the healing.

The Kobold Boss’s axes suddenly glowed a deep orange even from far away, and he swung. Two illusory axe-heads flew off the two axes, flying in Jax’s direction.

Jax dodged one, but the other hit him in the chest, a concussive force that slammed him onto the stone wall at the back. The healing wound burst out with blood again, and still continued to heal.

Even though his entire body ached, Jax got up, knowing there wasn’t anything else he could do. The boss was the last thing remaining between him and the 3-Star ticket, and he was going to get it, or die trying.

Even as his body ached, his mind cleared, allowing him to observe his situation far better. He wasn’t sleepy anymore, so he got back into the fight.

Jax dashed at the boss, immediately using his spell when he got close. The boss had his body wrapped, allowing Jax to hit him a few times.

The armor had grown significantly weaker now that he had killed the Kobold Mage, which Jax had assumed would be the case. Still, it was armor, and it wasn’t giving him much opportunity to hurt the boss.

Jax hit the boss around its limbs mostly, keeping it from using its axes to get rid of the restriction. With each hit, he made the armor worse, introducing chinks in them, then dents, and then finally breaking through them. freewёbnoνel-com

The boss struggled, but as it was in that moment, it couldn’t do anything except wait to die. Jax continued hitting the boss all over the place. At that point, he nearly believed that this was all that he would need to do to kill the thing.

However, it was a boss for a reason. Suddenly, the boss’s entire body glowed orange out of nowhere, releasing an explosive power that Jax barely managed to dodge.

Jax landed far away, looking ahead at the change that had come just then.

The boss slowly rose up from the ground, the threads around him coming undone. It wasn’t just the new ones that were undone, but the ones he had previously used too. All that was on its body were the dented and broken armor pieces.

Jax immediately used his spell again, giving it no time to do anything else, but his spell didn’t land on the boss at all. There seemed to be some sort of barrier around him in that moment that stopped his spell from being applied on it.

The boss slowly dropped its two axes and reached for the armor around its chest. It grabbed it by the collar and pulled it away. The armor broke into many pieces, falling all around the boss.

The other pieces broke in that moment too, the metal shards falling around the boss. At the same time, the scales around the boss changed in color as well, going from red to black.

Jax narrowed his eyes. The boss had entered its second phase, and from his limited understanding, it was the final phase.

Without the armor, the boss looked thin, its scaly face quite good-looking. Jax continued trying to use his spell, but nothing landed on the boss yet.

The boss reached for the two axes and pulled them out of the ground. Then, it showed a nasty little grin before charging for an attack.

Jax tightened his grip around his axe, ready to defend, but to his surprise, the boss was quite fast. It moved swiftly, its attacks coming as a flurry from all directions.

Jax moved his axe in every direction, trying to block them. The attacks themselves were powerful to begin with, but now they were so much faster as well.

Getting out of the armor had made the boss far stronger than Jax had hoped he would be. He wasn’t able to stop any of its attacks at all.

Bit by bit, Jax was pushed back, clearly losing the battle. His axe was a heavy one, so he was much less agile with it than the boss. The boss’s attacks started getting past his blocks, introducing tiny cuts around his body that he couldn’t dodge in time.

Jax panicked since there was nothing he could do at all. Thankfully, he could use his spell once again when he found the time to try it.

The poison threads wrapped around the boss’s body, stopping it for a moment. The boss wriggled around the constriction, trying to get itself out of it.

Jax took the opportunity to attack, swinging his axe onto the giant boss. It landed on its waist and dug nearly 2 inches deep before coming to a stop.

The boss roared.

Jax pulled the axe out and heard the snapping of threads as the boss flexed its way out of the constriction. He attacked again, digging another deep wound into its body.

It roared again and managed to tear through all of the threads.

Jax immediately used his spell when it was out, constricting it all over again. He went in for another attack when he saw the boss’s body glow orange once more.

He tried to move back, but the explosion came almost instantly.

The concussive force of the explosion threw Jax far away. He skidded along the barren ground, throwing up a cloud of dust. His entire body ached again as he tried to get himself up off the ground.

He was barely halfway up when the boss came jumping onto him, swinging its two axes down to kill him in one strike.
