Chapter 113: A New Party

"Should we form a party, when we don’t even know each other?" Jax asked the two. "Don’t you two think that’s awfully quick?"

The woman shrugged. "There are only two reasons the Navigator has brought 3 Ascendants together in one place. Either he wants us to kill each other, or he wants us to work together. And surely, no one here wants to kill each other, do we?"

The dark-haired young man smiled. "Will that be even possible?" he asked.

The woman said nothing to address that.

"Anyway, I think we should work together. We’re all working toward the same goal, so it should be easier, shouldn’t it?" she asked.

"I don’t particularly care. I need a party anyway, so I will be fine as long as I find anyone that can help me," he said.

Jax narrowed his eyes for a while, thinking what the correct thing to do here was.

"You are a warrior, right?" Jax asked. "What are you then?"

"A sorcerer," she answered. "Just like you."

"What can you do?" Jax asked. "What made this mess here?"

The woman’s lips turned to a thin line. "That’s something you have to be in my party to find out."

Jax didn’t know what else he could do here. "Alright," he said. "I’ll join your party. But if I find either of you inadequate, I will immediately throw you out of the party."

The woman smiled. "Do you seriously think an Ascendant would be inadequate?" she asked. "If you think so, then I’m afraid you haven’t yet seen what Ascendants can really do."

"You know an awful lot about Ascendants," the young man asked. "Have you been to the higher carriages before?"

The woman didn’t answer, choosing not to. "So, are we becoming a party?"

"I will join you," the young man said, turning toward Jax. "What about you?"

Jax shrugged. "I will join you too," he said. "We can start tomorrow morning. We’ll need to find one more member anyway."

"One more?" the woman asked. "Do you have another one ready?"

"I have a friend I will have join my party. Truthfully, I will not accept any form of criticism regarding her joining the party. I have decided on it for a while, and I’m willing to leave this party if it means I can be in her party."

The woman narrowed her eyes. "Is she your girlfriend?"

"No, just a friend. But she’s incredible. It will take her a month or so to be done with something she’s doing, so we’ll have to hunt with just the three of us for the time being. Or four, if we manage to find someone else."

"Well, if you say she’s incredible, then she must be. In that case, the final member of our party must also be incredible as well," the woman said. "What do you think?"

The young man shrugged. "As I said, I’m fine with whatever you two want. I will follow you."

The woman sighed. "Anyway, we’re in agreement, correct?" she asked. "We will form our party."

"Yes," Jax said.

"It appears so," the other young man replied.

"Then let our party be formed," the woman said. "Since we are a party now, let me introduce myself. I am Lucille Frosthaven. I am a Sorcerer mostly dealing in pure damage. For reasons I won’t explain just yet, I cannot afford to learn control spells."

"That’s alright," Jax said. "I am Jax. I am a sorcerer as well. I have a control magic to bind monsters, but you’ll find me fighting way more with my axe than my magic. At least, for now."

The woman raised an eyebrow.

They turned toward the other young man next.

"The name is Ning. Spearman warrior, as you can see. As for my restriction, which you two seem to be hiding so much about, I can only damage a monster if I hit them in one of three critical spots around their body. If I manage to hit all three, the monster dies."

Jax’s eyes narrowed. "I’m sorry, if you hit a monster in three places, it dies?"

Ning nodded. "Works great at some times, and horribly in others. The spots around the monsters are random, so sometimes they appear in places I couldn’t possibly reach with my spear."

Jax narrowed his eyes. "Then that bird earlier, you stabbed it in its three critical spots?" he asked.

"Oh yes. I was lucky they were out in the open. I didn’t have to search for it around its body."

Jax found it hard to believe that there was such an incredible restriction for someone.

"I see. Lucille, Ning, nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too," Ning said.

"Please, call me Lucy."

Jax nodded. "Are you guys still going to hunt? Because I’ve had it for the day, so I plan to return."

"I will return for today as well," Lucy said. "I only came to check what sort of monsters there were in this forest, and I’ve seen enough."

"I suppose I can return as well," Ning said. "We should find our fourth party member soon after returning. There may yet be more Ascendants."

"We’ll find them, surely."

The three walked back to the village, where they went their own separate ways after promising to meet at this place the next morning.

Jax returned to his tavern, his head full of a million thoughts as to what had just happened today.

"Gemma, didn’t you say Ascendants were rare?" Jax asked.

"They should be," Gemma said. "The chances of a single one coming on board in hundreds of galaxies is near to impossible. The Navigator only drops so many tickets throughout the universes after all."

"And yet there are three in the Oak Village," Jax said. "Was she correct? Is it really not just a coincidence?"

"I cannot answer that, for I am unsure myself," Gemma said. "But I would agree that it cannot be a mere coincidence. It may really be that the Navigator wishes you three to work together to achieve your goals."
