Chapter 72: Investigation!
Astralene hurriedly exited the room alongside Artemis, holding the Book of Destiny close to her chest as her thoughts was filled about how she could use this book to improve her power.
The duo locked the door behind them, leaving Damon to face his father alone. Damon’s facial expression quickly morphed into a much more serious expression.
Malik’s eyes, which were previously sparkling with pride, now identified the calm intensity in Damon’s expression, sensing that a serious topic was about to be discussed.
"Father," Damon began, his tone steady but edged with a seriousness that caught Malik’s attention, "There’s something important I need to discuss with you."
Malik’s expression grew more attentive, and he leaned forward slightly. "Go on, boy. What’s on your mind?"
Damon took a breath, then met his father’s intense gaze, "Before I awakened my Mana, I was under a curse. The Talent Devouring Abyssal Curse."
Malik’s relaxed posture stiffened instantly. His eyes narrowed, a sudden sharpness cutting through the warmth in his gaze, "The Talent Devouring Abyssal Curse?" he repeated, his voice low and dangerous.
"That’s not something cast lightly, nor easily detected. Who did this to you, and how did you solve it?" Malik asked. Through his years of exploration, he had certainly come across the Talent Devouring Abyssal Curse, and how it worked.
"I don’t know," Damon replied, his tone calm but firm, "But I suspect it was someone with ties to the Dragon Clan. That’s why I need your help to find out who it was."
Malik’s expression darkened, his jaw clenching. The curse Damon spoke of was one of the vilest forms of Abyssal magic. It stole a person’s innate potential, siphoning their talent away and transferring it to another.
Not only that, if the curse reached full power, it would fully cripple the one who was cursed, leaving them nothing more than an idiot and a weakling. For a dragon, or anyone, to place such a curse on their own kin was an unforgivable act.
Damon continued, his voice steady as he recounted what had happened. "I managed to solve the curse over six years ago, when I awakened my Mana. It was thanks to my Bloodlines, which activated after the curse and drew out my maximum Primordial potential. It also caused a backlash to whoever casted the curse."
Damon explained. He obviously didn’t want to expose his system, so he went with this explanation. Although he trusted his father, the system was a completely different story.
Thankfully, even after all these years, The Primordial Era was still extremely mysterious, so Damon’s excuse was something Malik couldn’t doubt or disprove.
Malik rose from his throne, his expression a blend of fury and concern. He paced across the chamber, his golden eyes blazing as he processed this revelation.
Thoughts swirled across his mind before he finally spoke, "And you suspect it was someone from the Dragon Clan who cast the curse? That would mean betrayal from within... a crime punishable by death."
"I do suspect that," Damon confirmed, his tone steady. "But I can’t prove it, yet. There are only a few people who might have had the means and the motive to curse me in this way, but that list isn’t very long. Whoever it was, they likely did it right after I was born. They’d also need enough power and resources to hide a connection to the Abyss, which only the heads of the Clan have."
Malik’s features darkened as anger coiled within him, a dangerous gleam flashing in his eyes, "The audacity..." he muttered to himself, "To place such a vile curse on a child of the Flandre bloodline... MY CHILD! if I find out who did this, " He stopped, his voice dropping to a low growl. "I will see them brought to justice, no matter what it takes."
Damon met his father’s gaze, his own eyes burning with determination, "That’s why I need your support, Father. I don’t know who did this or why, but I intend to find out. If there is someone within the clan capable of using Abyssal magic, they could be a danger not just to me, but to the entire Dragon Clan."
Malik’s jaw tightened as he considered his son’s words, sinking into thought. Whilst he was gone, he certainly knew people would target his son, the union of him and Sapphire would bear an era defining talent after all, but even he didn’t expect this.
"Does your mother know?" Malik asked, and Damon nodded. He had naturally told Sapphire, giving her the same excuse as he gave to Malik, but he had told her he would solve it himself, and she trusted in him.
"There’s more you need to know about what’s been happening." Damon shot a glance outside of the room, looking through the glass to see Artemis and Astralene in the training area experimenting with Magic.
"Artemis and I were sent to Starlight Island through a tampered Mana Teleportation Portal. Someone altered the portal to redirect us to that forsaken place, likely in an attempt to eliminate me."
The air in the chamber seemed to grow colder as Malik’s face hardened, "A tampered portal? In Dragon City?" His voice was dangerously quiet, and the room crackled with his barely restrained fury.
"Are you saying that someone in the Dragon Clan not only cursed you but then tried to send you to your death?"
"That’s exactly what I’m saying," Damon replied, his tone even as his father’s outrage simmered. "Starlight Island was crawling with Abyssal creatures and deadly Mana Formations. There were traces of the Abyss everywhere, corrupted environments, bodies of those who didn’t survive, and creatures I had never encountered before. It wasn’t just a dangerous place; it was a slaughterhouse designed to kill even the most capable of fighters."
"The portal’s manipulation was sophisticated. There was no obvious indication that the destination had been altered until we were already on the island." Damon explained.
Malik’s fists clenched at his sides, the power within him roiling just beneath the surface. "And yet, here you stand. Stronger than ever," he said, a hint of pride returning to his voice.
Damon gave a slight nod, "I’ve already got some leads," he continued. "There are only a few Dragon Clan families who would dare to get involved with Abyssal curses or even have the capability to alter Mana Teleportation Portals on such a scale. The Flandre Family is at the top of that list."
Malik’s eyes flashed, "You’re thinking of Varus and Antares, aren’t you?" His voice was laced with a knowing bitterness. "He’s always had a competitive streak, and his disdain for our side of the family isn’t exactly a secret."
"If he thought eliminating you would improve his own standing or that of his son Antares, he might indeed resort to such underhanded tactics. They always did have a bit of a grudge against you, before even meeting you." Malik explained.
Damon’s lips curled in a grim smile. "I wouldn’t put it past him," he admitted, "But I don’t want to jump to conclusions without solid evidence. I need to confirm my suspicions and gather more information before I confront him,or anyone else."
Malik’s gaze steady and full of resolve, "We will get to the bottom of this," he declared. "I’ll mobilize the resources we need to investigate the tampered portal and look into any Abyssal connections within the Clan. We’ll find out who cursed you, and we’ll expose whoever’s behind the attack on Starlight Island. But remember, Damon, trust no one."
Damon met his father’s gaze with determination, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. "I understand," he replied. "I won’t let my guard down, and I’ll find out who’s responsible for trying to ruin my life."
