The way that he said this, it was as if he had already given up on being the king.

He was no longer speaking with the regal manner that he was speaking with before.

It was as if he was just talking to Angela like he was her father.

It seemed that the king had already accepted that his reign as the king ended here and was getting ready to pass the throne down.
