Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Encountering Wild Beasts in Desolate Mountains and Ridges

The exile team struggled to make progress throughout the afternoon, hoping to reach the next station before dark.

Who would have expected, halfway through, the weather turned gloomy, and a light drizzle began, hindering the team's advance.

No matter how much they hastened, they could not reach the next station, and the sky darkened further due to the rain.

The Military Supervisor simply ordered to rest on the spot, and everyone found places to camp within the forest.

The most unlucky were Xiang Ying and her group of exiles, since they were at the very end of the team and moved slowly.

Now, their campsite was on a hillside, exposed to the wind and rain, with nowhere to hide.

Xiang Ying handed a cloak to Tao Xue, urging her to shelter the children from the rain.

She quickly set up a simple rain shelter over the wooden cart, as she couldn't let Xiang Li get drenched.

With Xiang Li having such serious injuries, if the rain soaked him and the hot weather exacerbated his wounds, it would really be trouble!

She didn't have any antibiotics now.

Xiang Ying particularly missed her medical tower.

Previously, an entire floor was dedicated to medical supplies, not just antibiotics and serums, but also a range of anti-inflammatory and cold medicines.

She focused her attention into the space, checking the status of the space's upgrade.

She saw the transparent door between the fourth and fifth floors still tightly locked.

Above it displayed that a rare item was needed to unlock the fifth floor.

The corresponding rare items were: speech, beast, strength.

These three words baffled Xiang Ying.

Upgrading her space in the apocalypse had never been so complicated before.

She heard Huang Huzi cursing nearby.

Xiang Ying redirected her attention to the left.

Huang Huzi, apparently having stepped in excrement, leaned against a big tree wiping it off whilst cursing, "Dammit, nothing goes smoothly."

Xiang Ying noticed the animal dung on his shoe and suddenly tensed.

She immediately went over to ask, "Where did you step on this?"

Xiang Qianqian, from a distance, watched Xiang Ying, not forgetting to mock her to the Seventh Princess, "Is our big sister developing some feelings for the team leader? She seems really concerned about him."

The Seventh Princess pursed her lips, choosing to ignore it.

Huang Huzi then told Xiang Ying that he had just come up from the hillside when he stepped in the dung, spitting angrily several times.

Xiang Ying's expression changed: "We can't stay here, go find the Military Supervisor and report, we have to leave now."

Huang Huzi frowned, "Look, elder princess, can you not make it difficult for me? I've done everything as you said, and now you bring up more trouble!"

Xiang Ying sternly said: "This is fresh bear dung, by its quantity, the bear is definitely not small, and it must not be far away. We are too far from the main exile team; if there's danger, we can't escape in time."

Huang Huzi lacked experience in wilderness survival; hearing Xiang Ying's warning, he burst into laughter instead.

"Stop joking, even if there is a bear, seeing so many of us, would it dare come close? It's asking for death if it does!"

Huang Huzi left, and Xiang Ying frowned.

A wise man does not stand under a dangerous wall, if it were before, she would have left immediately.

But leaving now would be simple for her, and taking three children along with Tao Xue would also be easy.

However, with the severely injured Xiang Li now, she couldn't just abandon him.

Decisively, Xiang Ying, tearing some rags from the wooden cart, tossed them to Tao Xue.

"Quick, I'll help you, you carry the children and climb up the tree."

Tao Xue was confused, "Why?"

Xiang Ying swiftly explained, "There might be wild animals around, no time to explain everything."

Startled, Tao Xue did not question further and followed Xiang Ying's orders.

The three children also became anxious, Xiang Xiuxiu asked, "What about uncle?"

"I'll protect him," Xiang Ying said, then began helping Tao Xue climb up the tree.

Tao Xue had Xiang Xiuxiu hanging on her back with ropes.

Xiang Yuanshuo and Xiang Yuanlang were each hoisted up, while Xiang Ying nimbly climbed up and firmly tied the children's ropes to the tree before jumping down the trunk.

The actions caught the surrounding people off guard.

"What is the elder princess up to now?"

Xiang Ying tightly tied back her hair and said plainly to the bewildered crowd: "Those who can climb trees should do so and secure themselves with ropes; the others, leave it to fate."

Bears can climb trees.

The worst scenario would be her failing to kill the bear, allowing it to climb the tree and devour someone.

It's their unlucky fate to encounter such a beast that climbs trees and prefers live prey.

When Qintianjian Lin family heard Xiang Ying's words, a group of women and children did not hesitate and immediately pushed the recently awakened old supervisor up a tree.

But many others sat still, looking at Xiang Ying in confusion.

Why on earth would they climb a tree?

Xiang Qianqian coldly said, "Big sister, you are really good at spreading panic. By making us all climb trees, are you suggesting there is really a ferocious beast?"

"The soldiers have swords and spears; if there really were a beast, they wouldn't let it reach us and would kill it."

Xiang Ying glanced at her: "If real danger comes, see if they choose to save themselves or push you out. A beast will leave when it's full, but a bear is different."

Anything alive interests it.

The surrounding people were startled, and seeing Xiang Ying pushing even her own children up the trees, they began to find her words more credible.

They hurriedly followed suit; those unable to climb were pulled up by relatives, clinging tightly to the tree trunks.

With everyone up, Xiang Qianqian, unable to climb, frantically sought help.

Yu Pin, kind-hearted, couldn't stand to leave her below alone, so she reached out and pulled Xiang Qianqian up the tree.

Soldiers on patrol came by, cracking their whips: "Get down! There's no beast."

No sooner had these words left his mouth than a scream was heard nearby.

The furious shouts of Huang Huzi rang out: "Shoot arrows, quickly!"

Screams and curses came one after another, mixed with more screams and the roars of a beast.

Those climbing the trees had a broader view from above, and upon seeing the huge black bear charging, their faces turned pale.

The soldier who had just been cracking the whip, frightened, fled in panic; some fell weakly to the ground, and the black bear immediately ripped through his belly.

Xiang Qianqian screamed in terror. In her panic climbing higher, she accidentally stepped on Yu Pin's head and kicked her to the ground.

The scream from Xiang Qianqian caught the bear's attention, and together with Yu Pin falling, it immediately abandoned the half-consumed man to head towards where Yu Pin landed.

Yu Pin, seeing the beast approaching, was paralyzed with fear and couldn't stand.

She stretched out her hand begging Xiang Qianqian from above: "Pull me up, quickly pull me up!"

Frightened, Xiang Qianqian clung tightly to the tree trunk, shaking with her eyes shut.

Xiang Ying frowned, her Phoenix Eyes dark as starlit skies.

If she really allowed the bear to kill Yu Pin, Xiang Li on the nearby cart wouldn't fare well either.

She decided to kill the bear cleanly.

First, she chose a palm-sized crossbow from her inventory.

"Hey!" she shouted boldly and jumped down from the tree.

Xiang Ying raised the crossbow and shot an arrow into the bear's back.

However, the small size of the crossbow meant the arrow only pierced the flesh slightly.

The bear's skin was tough and fur thick, almost as hard as steel.

It cried out in pain, turned its head to see Xiang Ying, and then charged furiously at her on all fours.

Xiang Ying turned and ran, intentionally leading the bear away from the area.

The crowd, watching where Xiang Ying disappeared, were shocked and gripped by a heavy blow in their hearts.

The elder princess's chances looked grim!
