She is the Side Character! — Watch Her Change her fate!-Chapter 255: Must You Marry Your Savior After Being Rescued from the Water? (Part 26)
"Let’s go to the teahouse to listen to a storytelling session this afternoon," Ah Chen said to Shen Xuan.
Shen Xuan was momentarily stunned. It was a good idea, but was it okay to say this in front of Uncle Lin? He sneaked a glance at Lin Daming, who was chopping stuffing over there, and felt like he was being chopped up.
Lin Daming glanced at Shen Xuan with the corner of his eye and sneered in his heart.
What else could he do? His daughter liked him, so he couldn’t really stop them from interacting.
But he must keep an eye on them!
The girl he fancied was so proactive, and Shen Xuan wasn’t someone to be bashful. Even though he felt the chill from Lin Daming, he still braced himself and agreed, "Alright."
"How about I buy all the meat here?" he whispered, thinking that way they could go to the teahouse earlier to listen to the storytelling and maybe even have a meal together.
And have a little chat in the meantime.
If she didn’t mind, he would then ask Lin Daming and look for a matchmaker to go through the formal process. It wasn’t that he was in a hurry to get married so soon, but that’s how society was in ancient times. Without any familial ties and spending time together every day, people would talk even if there was nothing going on.
As long as Lin Daming and she agreed, they could get married and fall in love slowly afterward.
After all, he couldn’t stand seeing her with someone else.
Thinking about that dream still made him a bit angry.
Ah Chen shook her head with a smile and refused, "Meat is good, but Lord County Magistrate must be tired of it recently. Let’s wait for others to buy it."
Shen Xuan’s face heated up instantly. Had she seen through him?
Most of what he bought here was indeed sent to the County Government to honor his father, leaving only a small portion for himself.
"Okay, I’ll wait for you. I’ll just go sit in the teahouse across the street and wait. Are you thirsty? Would you like some tea?" he said, still lowering his voice, fearing Lin Daming might hear and take it the wrong way.
In fact, Lin Daming, who was highly skilled, heard their murmurs loud and clear, and his chopping grew heavier.
Shen Xuan noticed this and remembered the system saying Lin Daming was a skilled fighter, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Yes, a little," Ah Chen replied.
Hearing this, Shen Xuan quickly turned around and headed to the teahouse across the street. In no time, he was back with two tea bowls and a pot of tea.
"Uncle Lin, have some tea," Shen Xuan said with a smile, a hint of ingratiation.
Lin Daming snorted but ultimately accepted the tea bowl. After all, you can’t hit someone with a smiling face, and since the young man hadn’t done anything wrong and was someone his daughter liked, he couldn’t really offend him.
Shen Xuan quickly poured a bowl of tea for Ah Chen and set the teapot aside. He said, "You drink first, and I’ll call someone over to pick it up later."
Shen Xuan’s actions were obvious, and those around noticed but dared not speak much in his presence.
But as soon as these people left, they were bound to have a good chat about it.
Who would’ve thought? Could it be that Second Young Master Shen actually had a thing for Lin Chen? The way he flattered Lin Daming suggested his feelings for Lin Chen were genuine.
However, there was still a disparity in their social statuses, and many people thought that if Lin Chen could just become a concubine, it wouldn’t be too bad.
They, as common folks, were after all different from those with official status.
Even so, in their eyes, Lin Chen was climbing the social ladder, and many felt envious.
Shi’s mother came to buy meat and saw Shen Xuan sitting in the teahouse looking this way, feeling extremely sour inside. She wished her own daughter could learn from Lin Chen’s methods. It hadn’t been long, and Second Young Master Shen was already so fixated.
She just had to be fixated on Ying Bairong, which really frustrated her.
Neither Lin Daming nor Ah Chen offered anything to Shi’s mother, who left sighing, unable to say much, carrying her basket away, once again cursing Shi Wen in her heart.
It was all because of that troublesome girl. If she hadn’t insisted on causing trouble, Lin Daming, a mere butcher and a neighbor of the Shi Family, wouldn’t even offer her odds and ends anymore.
The losses were significant.
If that girl had no clue by next year, she was determined to marry her off to Landlord Chen’s family, and then they could just have Landlord Chen come over to take her away.
"These here are on the house," Lin Daming said, casually tying up two pieces with not much meat and handing them to the last customer because the meat for the day was sold out.
Lin Daming closed his stall and headed with Ah Chen to the teahouse across the street.
"Thank you so much," the fourth daughter-in-law from the Ying Family said happily, taking the meat. That’s why everyone liked buying meat from Lin Daming’s stall.
Before Lin Chen’s incident of falling into the water, she had been a regular customer here.
She took her basket, intending to buy something else, but heard someone talking in a whisper.
"Looks like the Lin Family is really climbing up."
"If she can’t marry Ying Xiucai, marrying Second Young Master Shen isn’t bad. At least there’ll be no worries about food and drink."
"But that’s only if Second Young Master Shen doesn’t take a wife. With a main wife, life won’t be that easy."
The fourth daughter-in-law from the Ying Family was taken aback. Were they talking about Lin Chen?
She listened carefully and then turned around with the others. She saw Lin Daming and his daughter talking to a handsome young man.
Was that the County Magistrate’s younger son? Indeed, he was handsome, but word had it that he was an idle dandy.
Compared to scholarship, he certainly couldn’t match her younger brother.
But for Lin Chen to achieve this was really something.
Actually, Lin Chen wasn’t bad. Her family had money, she was good-looking, and she was said to have been educated. Marrying an ordinary scholar should be no problem. However, her younger brother was famous, and it was inevitable that he would become a ranked scholar. Many girls from good families wanted to marry him, and Lin Chen didn’t stand a chance.
"Let’s go, let’s go listen to the storytelling," Ah Chen said to Shen Xuan.
Shen Xuan glanced at Lin Daming following them, thinking they were just going the same way. But then Ah Chen said, "My father wants to join, too. He hasn’t been to a storytelling session before, so we’re going together."
Shen Xuan’s expression stiffened as he saw Lin Daming looking quite pleased, which left him speechless.
But that was fine—he could take the opportunity to talk with Uncle Lin later.
Lin Daming also held this thought, saying, "Let’s find a private room later."
Shen Xuan realized that Lin Daming wanted to have a word with him. That was fine, as this was a conversation they had to have sooner or later. He wanted to settle things as soon as possible to avoid any unexpected situations, as many things in this world were difficult to control.
In the private room, Ah Chen saw that neither of them spoke and smiled, "Don’t you have anything to talk about?"
She intentionally brought them together, hoping they would discuss things.
Lin Daming coughed. There were things to say, but in front of his daughter, he couldn’t be stern.
Shen Xuan wanted to talk, but in front of the girl he liked, he felt a bit uneasy and didn’t know what to say or whether he might offend her.
When Shen Xuan saw Lin Daming not speaking, he decided to speak up himself. He stood and bowed to Lin Daming, saying, "Uncle Lin, I have feelings for Miss Lin and wish to marry her. Do you grant your permission?"
"No," Lin Daming said loudly, "Our Chenchen only accepts live-in sons-in-law."
He said this on purpose to see if he could scare the young man off.
If he could be easily scared off and wasn’t willing to fight for it, then there was no need for further consideration—it couldn’t be genuine love.
He snuck a glance at Ah Chen and seeing her neither interject nor panic, he felt a bit more at ease.
Ah Chen just laughed; her father was about to be disappointed.
Only to hear Shen Xuan say, "Really?"
"If I agree to marry in, would Uncle Lin agree to this?"
The surprise came so fast that being a live-in son-in-law wasn’t an issue at all! To him, it made no difference.
