Chapter 35 - Release The Small Fish

With a Detective like Dexter confirming the authenticity of the pass, followed by Karl's glib tongue, the intensity of the bidding soared to a new height.

This was especially true now that they became aware of a monster lurking in the city.

Although it was claimed that the Seventh had killed a Slavrok in the sewer already, they wouldn't know how many more monsters were there.

They didn't dare to gamble their life just to save a little money.

What was money if they couldn't live to spend it?

Due to the numerous factors involved, Karl's empty pocket soon fattened immensely.

"I'll bid 10 gold coins. I want to travel with my entire family to another city for sightseeing."

"Just 10 gold coins? You might as well stay at your home. I bid 20 gold coins. I still have business left to do."

"Your business is worthless compared to mine. I bid 20 gold coins and 30 silver coins."

In the blink of an eye, the bidding value hovered between the 20s. After all, it was hard for them to churn out more than 30 gold coins for a pass.

None of them had carried enough money for such an impromptu bidding to begin with.

Had they been informed in advance, then it was very likely to have surpassed 40 gold coins by now.

Nevertheless, Karl was not disappointed by the earning already. He wasn't blinded by greed to wish to obtain every bit of money in his pocket.

Money was a sin.

Without enough strength to protect their money, then one would become a sinner. A sinner who could be disposed of and no one would bothered about them.

Karl only hoped to earn enough for his survival once he got the recommendation to enter the academy.

'The bidding is about to reach 25 gold coins, but I don't think any of them are related to the case.' Karl was silently nervous.

His main objective was to lure out the culprit and not earn money. If he failed the main objective, then forget about getting to an academy. And even if he could still go, he doubted Damien would favor him.

Just when Karl thought he had failed the task once the bidding had stopped on 25 gold coins and 30 silver coins, another new bidder from a carriage offered 30 gold coins.

A whopping increase of 4 gold coins and 70 silver coins!

Alarmed and startled, Karl nearly lost his composure at the unexpected bid.

"30 gold coins, do I hear any more bid?" Karl exclaimed loudly. His nostrils flared up, depicting an exhilarated and drunk man drowning in gold coins.

After calling the bid three times, there were no more other bidders.

Soon, the person who won the bid paid upfront, and Karl carefully counted the gold coins gleefully. He didn't even care if anyone else was watching.

Who would dare to rob him?

With all uniformed police officers, and even a detective present, only a fool would attempt to rob him.

Not to mention, it was already stated he was granted the pass by the Seventh Order. To mess with him would be equivalent to slapping the Seventh Order's face.

Sometime later, Karl asked the elderly man for his name. "May I know your name and is it only going to be you who will exit the city?"

"The name's Sullivan and I'll be leaving with my wife and daughter. I have to bring them to the event at Kodacrest City." The elderly man identified as Sullivan said softly.

Meanwhile, Karl was taken aback. 'Two women? Could the culprit be a woman?'

While Karl was confused, he nodded his head and patiently waited for him to bring his wife and daughter from his original carriage.

As for Damien, his eyes narrowed coldly. There were no traces of Diamond 3 card on either of them.

'Could the culprit notice it was a trap and decided not to leave?' He wondered silently. The trap was designed to be obvious from the start, but the point was that they couldn't afford to not jump in it as well.

After all, with the lockdown in place, they would be discovered sooner or later. There was no chance of escaping except for this opportunity.

Suddenly, Damien had a bad premonition. 'Did I get outplayed instead?'

In a hurry, he signaled for Dexter to return.

A few seconds later, Dexter ensured the crowd was distracted as Karl welcomed Sullivan and his family, allowing him to slip away unnoticed.

"What's the matter, Seventh?" Dexter quickly asked in confusion. "Did we have a change of plan?"

"No, just let them go with nobody following them," Damien explained. "Remember, no one is allowed to leave. Only I am allowed and that is after everything has been checked out. Is that clear?"

"Y-Yes, Seventh." Dexter realized the severity of the matter. He didn't know why Damien's expression and tone suddenly changed, but it was definitely related to the current situation.

Shortly after Dexter made the radio command, he suddenly received a piece of terrible news.

"What? You're saying Sergeant Eugene left the city?" Alarmed, Dexter's eyes widened in disbelief. "Didn't we say no one was allowed to leave?"

His face turned pale when he could sense a dreadful aura from Damien.

"Apologies, Seventh." Dexter quickly bowed his head.

"What's the point of apologizing? Does that help with the situation?" Damien exhaled softly. He finally understood the original appearance of the Diamond 3 card.

It was a metaphor and a hint that the light was involved. And who was the light?

It was none other than the police officers. However, it wasn't just any random officers. Instead, it was regarding Sergeant Eugene.

The hint was already given to him when he recalled the angle and positioning of the Diamond 3 card. When he recalled the scene, he realized it was angled weirdly but its direction was pointing at Eugene.

'Now I feel like I just swallowed a mouthful of maggots.' He had thought and planned hard, only to end up being a buffoon. He didn't release the small fish, but the big fish from the start.

How comical was that?
