As Drai’s eyes passed by his attributes, he found himself smiling at the fact that both his favorite stats were close to hitting one hundred. Of course he had a particularly strong start in which those two stats were basically halfway to one hundred right after his awakening, but that didn’t diminish his sense of achievement or appreciation for his constant efforts at all.
Looking through his ever-growing skill list, Drai finally spotted a skill he had never seen before.
"Radiant Bolt, huh? At least the name sounds pretty cool..." he muttered as he opened the details.
[Skill: Radiant Bolt]
[Description: A unique skill obtained by assimilating human essence.]
[Effects: User is able to conjure solid yet ephemeral energy bolts, powered by the user’s stamina and transcendence. Their size and power depends on the expended transcendence, with a regeneration rate of one point every minute. Like other transcendence-related skills, Radiant Bolt operates on a separate energy reserve and doesn’t interfere with the activations of similarly-powered skills.] 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Upon reading what the skill does, Drai exclaimed with a grin, "Thank god it’s not trash!" He then read the entire subscreen again while trying to memorize the details.
"It’s also based on my transcendence, huh? That’s kinda weird. No way the guy I drained coincidentally had the transcendence stat too. So does that mean these unique skills aren’t exact copies of the essence owners’ skills but modified versions based on me? Or did this happen because I assimilated human essence?"
Thinking about how practical his new skill seemed just by looking at its details, Drai figured he would have to assimilate human essence again to find out if it would really give him a similarly useful skill.
"Maybe I’ll drain another guy if our squad’s ever allowed to kill in a mission," he considered.
After closing the subscreen, Drai looked at his meager amount of SP. He doubted that he’d get another influx of SP any time soon, so he decided to save it for future use, especially since the rest of his available skills didn’t seem very useful. He then took a last glance at his visibly taller naked self on the screen before closing it entirely.
Drai’s hand twitched as he was really eager to immediately try out Radiant Bolt, but he didn’t want to accidentally destroy the precious machines here, so he resisted the urge.
’Too bad no one in the squad seems to have any psychic skills or other physique-bypassing skills, otherwise I could test out that rebound skill easily,’ Drai also thought. ’I think I’ll ask them later to introduce me to someone with that type of skill.’
Putting aside his new skills for now, Drai stood up again, ready to incorporate his accelerated grabs into the finger strike he just mastered. As usual, he trained until late and only went home close to midnight.
The following day, the Seventh Squad gathered for their daily squad training right after the morning PT. But before Gramps could proceed with his unenthusiastic instructions, Drai had already approached him.
"Gramps, can I try out my new skill before we start?" he asked.
"New skill? Did you level up or something?" Gramps inquired back.
"Yeah, I leveled up last night."
After a brief pause, Gramps said, "Sure, but make it short. I also wanna see what it’s like and how good you are with it. If it looks useful but really lacks polish, I’ll adjust today’s training so you can get used to it more."
"Alright, thanks," Drai said before walking away. Since he still had no clue what his bolts were like, he distanced himself from the rest of the squad lest he accidentally hurt them.
Back at the squad, Beachball said, "Why aren’t we starting, Gramps? And where’s Drai going? Taking a piss?"
"We’re waiting for him to try out a new skill," Gramps replied to both questions with a bored tone while fiddling with Gizmo, his small device.
"Did he level up?" Cubes asked, to which Gramps lazily nodded.
"So that makes him a level eleven at only eighteen—what a prodigy... When I was his age, I was level two at most," Mandy mentioned with a resigned smile and headshake. From the following sighs around her, the others seemed to share her sentiment.
Even Danny was particularly quiet. Staring at Drai’s figure heading to the other end of the field, Danny couldn’t help but wonder if his own special recruitment had any meaning when such a young monster existed. Danny felt that even if he did his best, his future accomplishment would almost certainly be overshadowed by Drai’s.
’General Alancho never even visited me again after I finished my IET1...’ he recalled somewhat bitterly.
Meanwhile, Ghost’s eyes were also glued to Drai. Yet, unlike the others around him, his unseen face was impassive while his thoughts remained a mystery.
Shortly after, Drai finally stopped after reaching the far side of the training ground.
’Alright, this should be far enough,’ he thought while glancing at his distant squadmates. He then raised his right hand, forming an empty grip parallel to his head. And after thinking about it for a second, he decided to use up one point of transcendence for his first try.
Right after Drai willed it, a white spark appeared in his grip, quite reminiscent of his energy balls. In an instant, it elongated toward both sides while forcing Drai’s grip to widen.
To everyone’s astonishment, a giant, beaming white pillar suddenly formed right on top of Drai’s raised hand.
’Bolt my ass! This is a fucking log!’ Drai silently cussed as he eyed the object sitting on his palm. Measuring it with his eyes, he reckoned it was at least ten meters long. Interestingly, despite being solid unlike his energy balls, it was practically weightless, causing Drai to doubt its sturdiness.
’Based on what I read, this thing should dissipate soon, right? Should I see how strong it is before that happens?’ Drai contemplated.
He glanced at his squadmates, but none of them were saying anything as they had been mesmerized by the glowing pillar with pointy ends he was holding.
With no one there to hold him back, Drai finally made up his mind and held the bolt with both hands. Its weightlessness threw him off at first, but he quickly managed to handle it well before his gaze shifted toward the metal ceiling looming over the field.
’If this thing actually explodes, my safest bet is throwing it up there,’ Drai thought before he finally tensed his muscles and took a small leap, hurling the giant bolt almost straight upward in the process.
The throw was somehow silent but only until the giant bolt tore through the ceiling with a thunderous crack, leaving a sizzling hole on it. Outside the squad’s view, it rose into the sky before vanishing without a trace.
"Well, that was pretty impressive. I didn’t even use Nexus Augmentation or Nova Flux," Drai remarked as he peered through the hole he just made.
But just when Drai was about to walk back to the others, a figure had already sprinted toward him.
"What have you done?!" the training ground’s operator yelled right at Drai’s face upon arriving, his face flushed from a mix of fury and exertion.
After wiping off the man’s burst of saliva from his face, Drai bowed and said, "I’m sorry for the damage, sir. I was just trying out a new skill."
"You call that trying out?! You obviously put strength behind your throw!"
"Well, yeah, but I didn’t even use a tenth of my maximum power. How should I know the ceiling would get pierced just from one weak throw?"
Pained by the insult, the staff was about to curse Drai’s ancestors, but he was stopped short by a sudden commotion at the entrance.
Following this, a group of fully geared personnel barged into the training ground and headed to Gramps, who nonchalantly pointed at Drai, sending the group his way.
Inspecting the dozen or so newcomers, Drai automatically gulped when he spotted one of the guards assigned to him during his detention.
After they arrived, the group immediately surrounded Drai while the leading man with a thick mustache said, "Private Drai Varz, follow us for questioning. Refrain from any sudden movements, or my men will be forced to take you down."
While the operator quietly reveled at Drai’s predicament, the man in question could only slump his head without a word as he wondered what kind of unlucky star had been shining so brightly when his mom gave birth to him.
