Chapter 172: Investigation at the Port [Christian POV]

I lightened my steps, doing my best to remain as quiet as possible. The men were on the other side of the wall of stacked shipping containers.

"Come, we’ll start from this side. Get it loaded on the trucks. Leave the smaller containers for last."

I listened quietly before leaning out behind the blue container. In the distance, I could see the two men walking over to man the equipment necessary to lift the shipping containers.

Taking advantage of their averted gaze, I snuck around into the next row, looking through the manifest tags that were zip-tied to the doors of the containers.

No. No.. Not this one either....

I was checking the names of the companies that the containers belonged to until I finally came across what I’ve been looking for.

It was a half-size container that had the Moresi auction house logo on it. I quickly walked up to it to read the attached manifest.

"Contents: Antique Sculpture. Weight: 3,800 kg," I read it aloud under my breath.

There’s no way that’s a sculpture. It’s way too heavy.

I tried to look around to see if I could somehow take a peek inside, but unfortunately, everything was locked up tight. Pulling out my phone, I quickly snapped a photo and walked forward, closer to where the men were working.

The rain picked up, covering up the sounds of my footsteps. I ran from container to container until I reached the area where they were unloading the crates and loading the contents into the back of a large truck.

"Hurry up. We need to get this one empty before the rain picks up!" The man shouted to the others.

I noticed that more men showed up now, and that all of them carried guns. My hand subconsciously slid into my pocket, feeling my own pistol that was ready in my pocket.

There was no way I was going to let myself investigate unarmed anymore. One ’accident’ was enough for me to learn my lesson.

From the shadows, I quietly watched as the men unloaded the contents of the shipping container. There were many crates of all shapes and sizes, but none of them seemed like they could contain people.

As they finished unloading the first crate, one of the men turned to the one who looked like the leader of the group. "You said the next auction event is next week? I’ve been thinking about attending."

"Don’t even try, moron. First off, the next event is a very exclusive, by-invitation-only event. No one’s supposed to know that it’s even happening. Plus, it’s not a good sale, you’ll never be able to afford it."

"Oh, so it’s one of those ’special’ events? I’ve been wanting to go to one of those, too. Last time there was a real hottie.."

"Shut up! Go, get back to work before I tell the boss you’ve been blabbing too much!" the leader shouted.

My eyes darkened. Based on their short conversation, it seemed like all of my suspicions were correct. These men were sick, disgusting animals.

A moment later, a large man walked over, holding a black umbrella up with his stubby fingers. "What’s with all of the commotion here? Hurry up! The next shipment is due to arrive soon, and its contents are worth more than your pathetic life!"

"Boss!" The leader quickly bowed. He waved his hand to tell the others to get back to work.

"Have you seen anyone around? Security told me there was a man lurking around. I need him out of here before the shipment arrives."

"No, sir. It’s been clear all night," the leader replied.

"Hmm, keep your eyes peeled. If you find him, don’t be afraid to shoot. We can’t risk exposing ourselves." The man finally turned his head enough for me to see his face.

Karl! freёnovelkiss-com

Beneath the umbrella, Karl’s grotesque face appeared. He looked like he had had many sleepless nights due to the dark circles under his eyes. He scanned around the area with a poisonous hostility, trying to find me.

He motioned over to the security guards who stood behind him, "Go. I want you to sweep the area and find him. If he looks suspicious, shoot him on sight."

The guards all pulled out their weapons and nodded, scattering in all directions.

I knelt down behind a few unloaded crates, avoiding their detection. They used high-power flashlights to search the area before moving on to sweep the aisles between the shipping containers.

I’ll have to be careful. They don’t look like they’ll stop until they find me.

Karl lit a cigarette and turned over to look at the small-time leader beside him. "This rain sucks. Just makes me want to go back and get into a warm bed with a hottie with big tits," he sighed.

"Oh yeah, boss? You must have all the ladies," the man laughed with slight hesitation.

Karl didn’t pick up on it, "Yeah. These sluts are all dying to get into bed with me. It’s just that I’m a soon-to-be married man. I gotta have my fun before I get married."

"Congratulations! Who’s the lucky lady?"

"My beautiful bride is the youngest daughter of the Moresi family. Let me tell you, this one has all of the best curves. I can’t wait to have my way with her. If it weren’t for these nonstop court hearings, I would’ve had her by now."

Karl licked his lips as he spoke. It was so disgusting that before I knew it, my hand was already gripping the pistol in my pocket.

Anger and disgust flared up inside of me. How could someone so disgusting deserve to even look at Leslie? It took all of my restraint not to shoot him right here and now. But I knew if I did, I’d miss out on my chance to collect the evidence I needed.

He was another reason why I needed to get to the bottom of this. Since there was so much resistance from the courts to put him in jail, I had to expose this whole operation to make sure he would never have the chance to lay his hands on Leslie.
