Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 146: A Relative’s Child
Wren Sutton walked out of the break room and saw Zoey sitting on the hospital bed, her face etched with worry as she looked at her.
"Mommy, did that mean uncle bully you?"
Wren Sutton walked over, composed herself, and offered a gentle smile. "No, he didn’t."
’There’s no need to involve a child in adult matters.’
Zoey threw herself into Wren Sutton’s arms and said in her small, childish voice, "Let’s call the police. Let the policemen come and take the bad man away. I don’t want to see him."
Wren Sutton remained silent.
「About ten minutes later.」
A doctor came in to do rounds, followed by a large crowd that filled the room. There were doctors, nurses—even the hospital director was there.
Everyone present, except for Zoey herself, knew she had leukemia. Their words were filled with sympathy and compassion for the little girl.
’It’s so unfortunate for someone so young to have such a disease.’
"This disease is very complex. As for a specific treatment plan, we need to study it further."
Wren Sutton said gratefully, "Thank you all for your hard work."
"Not at all."
Once the rounds were finished, the doctors turned and began to file out of the room.
Just then, Adrian Lancaster emerged from the break room.
Dressed in a black suit, his every move exuded elegance and style. He radiated a powerful, undeniable presence.
He was tall, and his presence carried an oppressive weight.
"Director Wallace, please wait a moment."
Director Wallace, who had just stepped out of the room, turned back in surprise.
"President Lancaster?"
He immediately stepped back into the room.
"For a second, I thought I was mistaken. President Lancaster, what are you doing here?"
’As far as I know, Adrian Lancaster has been spending the past few days in the main hospital building with Ms. Marshall.’
Adrian Lancaster didn’t answer immediately. He first introduced Wren Sutton. "This is my wife."
Director Wallace was even more astonished. ’So Wren Sutton is Mrs. Lancaster. No wonder they requested a transfer from a regular ward to a VIP one.’
"Ah, Mrs. Lancaster." Director Wallace looked at Wren Sutton, his tone noticeably more respectful than before.
Wren Sutton met his gaze with a smile, not foolish enough to deny it on the spot.
’Until the divorce papers are finalized, I am technically still Mrs. Lancaster.’
’And if using this identity gets the hospital to take Zoey’s condition more seriously, then it’s not a bad thing.’
A thought flashed through Director Wallace’s mind, and he glanced at the little girl on the bed.
"President Lancaster, Mrs. Lancaster, forgive me for being forward, but is young Zoey..."
"She’s a relative’s child. My wife is looking after her for the time being," Adrian Lancaster explained.
An expression of understanding dawned on Director Wallace’s face.
"Please give Zoey’s case your utmost attention. As long as she can be cured, money is no object."
Director Wallace was well aware of the Lancaster family’s financial power and wouldn’t dare to be negligent. "President Lancaster, I assure you the hospital does its utmost for every single patient."
"I have faith in your capabilities, Director Wallace."
Afterward, Director Wallace gave a few more on-the-spot instructions to the doctors and nurses before the rounds were officially concluded.
After the group left, Adrian Lancaster was still holding Wren Sutton’s hand, their fingers intertwined.
"Mean uncle, let go of my mommy’s hand!"
Adrian Lancaster frowned and turned to meet Zoey’s adorably fierce glare.
’That little expression is the spitting image of my sister, Lucia, when she was young,’ he thought. ’It’s too cute to get mad at.’
"Little one, you shouldn’t call her that. My wife isn’t your mother. You should be calling her ’Auntie.’"
Zoey refused to listen. "I don’t wanna call her Auntie! I’m gonna call her Mommy!"
"Wren Sutton is not your mother," Adrian Lancaster corrected her sternly. "Because you are not our daughter."
Zoey’s eyes welled up with tears, and she looked like a sad little bunny.
But the little girl was defiant. The next second, she puffed out her cheeks, stood up with her hands on her hips, and glared, her eyes wide.
"She *is* my mommy!"
Adrian Lancaster felt a headache coming on, and his frown deepened.
’This kid is so stubborn. She may look like Lucia, but she’s not nearly as well-behaved as Lucia was.’
’I can’t just spank her over a form of address, can I?’
"You little..."
Before he could finish, Wren Sutton cut him off.
"Why are you getting so worked up over a three-year-old?"
Adrian Lancaster was displeased. "This is a serious matter. It has to be corrected."
Wren Sutton disagreed. She pulled her hand free and walked over to Zoey.
"Again, she’s only three years old."
"Three isn’t that young. It’s old enough to know better."
Wren Sutton shot back, "Did you know better when you were three?"
Adrian Lancaster was speechless.
Wren Sutton coaxed Zoey to sit down and gave her a piece of candy.
"We can work on the name thing later. The most important thing right now is getting Zoey better."
Adrian agreed to cooperate with the hospital for Zoey’s treatment, willing to spend whatever it took. He’d just chalk it up to a good deed. After all, the little girl looked so much like a Lancaster. You could call it a kind of fate.
"Fine, go ahead and spoil her."
"I know what I’m doing."
After speaking, Wren Sutton glanced at her watch.
"You should get to the office. Don’t fall behind on your work."
Adrian Lancaster didn’t move. "I’m not going to the office this morning. I’m headed to the convention center. The winning bid for the Dreamtide Bay project is being announced today."
Wren Sutton didn’t care about any of that; she just wanted Adrian Lancaster to leave.
"Then you should get going. You don’t want to be late."
Adrian Lancaster stared at her, his gaze profound. "Do you want me to win?"
Wren Sutton’s tone was placid. "Winning depends on merit, not on my opinion."
"I’ll show you what I’m made of. You’ll see how I crush my competition."
"..."
Before he left, Adrian Lancaster mentioned one more thing.
"I’ve arranged for two caregivers. They’ll be here shortly. Have them handle whatever you need. You should get some rest. Don’t wear yourself out staying at the hospital all the time."
With her back to Adrian Lancaster, Wren Sutton felt a wave of complicated emotions. She didn’t refuse his kind gesture, replying softly, "I know."
"Call me anytime if you need anything."
Wren Sutton pretended not to hear him, ignoring his last words.
...
Two female caregivers arrived at the room on schedule. They were dressed in simple, clean clothes, had kind faces, and appeared to be in their forties or fifties.
"Mrs. Lancaster, we were sent by Mr. Lancaster to care for young Zoey."
After learning their names, Wren Sutton addressed them warmly, "Aunt Zane, Ms. Morgan."
The two of them smiled bashfully. "Mrs. Lancaster, you’re too kind."
Wren Sutton invited them to sit and briefly explained Zoey’s situation.
Compared to caring for elderly patients who couldn’t manage on their own, looking after Zoey would be an easy job. If the two of them worked together, it wouldn’t be tiring at all.
Best of all, the pay was exceptionally high. They were more than happy to do their absolute best to care for Zoey.
Just then, a nurse pushed the door open and entered.
"Mrs. Lancaster, Director Wallace has requested your presence in the conference room. Several specialists are there as well. They’ve formulated a treatment plan and would like you to hear it."
Recognizing the importance of the meeting, Wren Sutton stood up at once.
"Okay, I’m on my way."
Zoey grabbed Wren Sutton’s hand. Though she didn’t say a word, Wren could guess what she meant and offered a few gentle words of explanation and reassurance.
Only then did Zoey reluctantly let go.
Wren Sutton instructed the caregivers to look after Zoey, then left the room with her mind at ease. In the hallway, she ran right into Mrs. Marshall.
Wren Sutton had no intention of engaging with her and continued walking straight ahead.
Mrs. Marshall charged forward menacingly and, like a common shrew, swung her hand and slapped Wren Sutton across the face.
"You bitch! You sow discord! Not only did you steal my daughter’s boyfriend, but you also caused her to need an amputation and become a cripple! This isn’t over!"
