Chapter 139: Chapter 139: A Bite on His Neck

"Put me down."

Wren Sutton angrily kept her voice down, not wanting to disturb the patients resting in the other rooms.

Adrian Lancaster paid her no mind, impassive as he continued to walk forward, still carrying her. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

They were fast approaching the elevators, but no matter what Wren said, Adrian didn’t react.

In a fit of desperation, she bit down on his neck.

Adrian Lancaster’s brow furrowed in pain. He hadn’t expected Wren Sutton to actually dare to bite him. ’This woman... He had spoiled her so much she’d become completely lawless, always pushing her luck.’

"Wren Sutton, what are you, a dog?!"

Wren Sutton looked up, her eyes defiantly meeting Adrian Lancaster’s. She didn’t feel the least bit sorry.

’He’d forced her to do it. She wasn’t to blame.’

"Just put me down."

Adrian Lancaster wasn’t falling for it, his gaze sharp and cold.

Seeing that he still wouldn’t let go, Wren steeled her heart in defiance and bit down hard again in the exact same spot. The bite mark was now impossible to miss.

Adrian Lancaster: "..."

It would be a lie to say it didn’t hurt, but his expression remained unchanged. ’He’d like to see what other tricks Wren Sutton had up her sleeve.’

Wren felt a pang of guilt. She snuck a glance at Adrian Lancaster and saw his cold expression; he acted as if he couldn’t feel a thing.

"Having fun?" The man’s voice came from above her, spoken through clenched teeth. "My dear Mrs. Lancaster."

This wasn’t going as she’d imagined. Wren’s head throbbed with frustration. "You..."

A normal person would have instinctively let go if someone bit their neck, but not only did Adrian refuse to loosen his grip, he actually held her tighter.

Wren couldn’t understand what he was thinking. ’Does his neck not hurt at all?’

Adrian saw right through her. He let out a cold snort. "If you think that’ll make me put you down, you’re far too naive."

Wren was mentally exhausted, overcome by a deep sense of helplessness. "Then what will it take for you to let me go?"

"What’s so great about this hospital?" Adrian’s tone was cold and hard. "That girl, Zoey... even her own parents don’t care about her. Why do you have to be so conscientious? You’re just making trouble for yourself."

Wren’s thoughts were a tangled mess. She couldn’t explain it; she just couldn’t bear the thought of abandoning Zoey. "You wouldn’t understand."

Adrian almost laughed in exasperation. "Since you love taking care of children so much, why don’t we go home tonight and focus on making one of our own. Once we have kids, you can stay home and take good care of them."

Wren flushed, her embarrassment turning to fury. "Who wants to have your children? In your dreams!"

Adrian lowered his gaze, his eyes burning into hers. "You’re my wife. If you’re not going to have my children, who are you going to have them for?"

Wren was in no mood to argue with him about it. She turned her head, avoiding his gaze.

Just then, the elevator arrived at their floor, and the doors slowly slid open.

Adrian carried Wren inside.

At this point, Wren was out of options. She decided she had no choice but to back down and tell him the truth.

"Zoey has leukemia. She’s just a little girl. Can you really bear to leave her in the hospital to fend for herself?"

"Adrian, I’m begging you, please let me stay and take care of Zoey. My heart just breaks for her."

Adrian’s brow furrowed. "Leukemia?"

He hadn’t realized the little girl was that sick. ’No wonder her parents haven’t shown their faces.’

Wren nodded. "The doctor told me himself. Zoey doesn’t know yet."

Adrian fell silent, lost in thought.

Wren didn’t disturb him, waiting quietly.

A moment later, with a DING, the elevator reached the ground floor.

Adrian carried Wren out.

When Wren saw he hadn’t changed his mind, she panicked. The moment they stepped out of the emergency building, she began to struggle with all her might, pounding on Adrian and throwing all caution to the wind.

"After everything I just told you, you’re still completely unmoved? You’re so cold-blooded! I hate you, I hate you..."
