Chapter 100: Chapter 100: What Are You Doing? This Is a Hospital

"Are you here alone?" As he spoke, Sean Sterling had already walked up to Wren Sutton.

"Mhm." Wren nodded and smiled.

Sean saw she was carrying a lot and offered to help. "Let me carry some of that for you."

"It looks like a lot, but it’s not heavy. Sean, I appreciate the offer." Wren took a half-step back.

Sean looked at her, exasperated. He couldn’t exactly snatch the bags from her hands.

"Why isn’t Adrian with you?"

"He’s..." Wren hesitated for a moment. "He’s busy with work. I didn’t want to disturb him."

Sean didn’t think much of it, but then his gaze fell on the shopping bags in Wren’s hands. A conspicuous logo for baby products caught his eye, and his expression brightened.

"You bought so many baby things. Could it be that you’re..."

Wren knew she couldn’t avoid it; she was bound to be asked.

’I’m panicking inside,’ she thought, but she tried her best to remain calm on the surface.

"The day after tomorrow is the Quinn family’s young master’s one-month celebration. Grandma isn’t very mobile, so she asked Adrian and me to attend the banquet on her behalf. I figured I should buy a gift for the baby."

The explanation was perfectly reasonable and successfully dispelled Sean’s suspicion.

’Looks like I was overthinking things,’ he thought.

He had thought Wren was pregnant and was just about to congratulate her and Adrian Lancaster.

"Old Mrs. Quinn is Old Mrs. Lancaster’s best friend, I believe."

"Yes, she is."

"No wonder."

With the crisis averted, Wren breathed a sigh of relief, silently thanking the Quinn family.

’Thank goodness for that excuse,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, I really wouldn’t have known what to make up on the spot.’

Speaking of the old matriarch, Sean asked a few casual questions. When he learned she would be discharged in a few days, he was genuinely happy for her.

Just then, his phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and hung up without a change in expression.

"I’m meeting someone here to discuss something."

Wren took the hint and didn’t press further. "Okay, I’ll let you get to it. I was about to head home anyway."

"Call me if you need anything. Drive safe."

"Okay."

The two parted ways, walking in opposite directions.

Wren hadn’t taken more than a few steps when she heard a syrupy sweet voice call out "Sean..." from behind her.

Driven by gossip-fueled curiosity, she couldn’t resist sneaking a peek back.

A woman had appeared by Sean Sterling’s side, clinging to his arm coquettishly. From the side, she looked a lot like the woman Wren had run into a couple of days ago when she was paying a fee at the Amberwood Estates property management office.

The two of them looked intimate—not like ordinary friends.

Wren pulled her gaze away.

All these years, she had never heard anyone mention Sean Sterling’s love life, nor had the media ever reported on it.

It seemed he had a girlfriend now.

But for some reason, Wren felt that something was off.

Seeing that woman, Isla Griffith’s image involuntarily flashed through her mind. It was as if her best friend was the one who should have been standing next to Sean.

Speak of the devil.

Wren had just left the mall and gotten into her car when she received a call from Isla Griffith.

She said she had a tricky situation on her hands and didn’t know how to handle it.

"What is it?" Wren asked.

Isla explained how Sean Sterling had transferred fifty-eight thousand to her.

"I was supposed to treat him that day, but he insisted on transferring money to me. I didn’t accept it, but after the red packet expired, he sent it again. He left a message saying if I don’t accept it, he’ll send it every single day."

Wren: "..."

"How about I give you the cash, and you can give it back to him for me?" In short, Isla didn’t want to feel indebted to Sean Sterling.

Wren didn’t refuse. "I can help you give it back, but what if he still doesn’t accept it?"

Isla sighed in frustration.

After a moment of silence, an idea struck Wren. "Buy him a gift. That would be more effective than just giving him cash."

Isla smacked her forehead, a look of sudden realization on her face.

"Of course! Why didn’t I think of that? Darling, you’re the smart one."

Wren smiled and started driving home.

She hadn’t even reached Amberwood Estates when her phone rang again. It was Kevin Dawson.

Wren frowned. ’This call is probably about Adrian Lancaster.’ She didn’t really want to answer it.

But the phone kept ringing, its persistence suggesting an emergency on the other end. If she didn’t pick up, he would just keep calling.

The incessant ringing made Wren feel a little uneasy, her heart pounding. ’Could something have actually happened?’

Finally, she answered on her Bluetooth headset so she could keep driving.

Kevin Dawson’s anxious voice came through the earpiece. "Mrs. Lancaster, please come to the hospital right away. The hospital won’t pump President Lancaster’s stomach without a family member’s signature."

"Does it have to be my signature?"

"Yes. President Lancaster doesn’t want to alarm the rest of the Lancaster family. He’s worried that if word gets out, Old Mrs. Lancaster will become anxious."

Wren fell silent. She couldn’t find any fault with his reasoning.

Grandma doted on Adrian Lancaster the most. If she found out he had alcohol poisoning and needed his stomach pumped, the shock would be too much for her.

Thinking of Old Mrs. Lancaster, Wren had no choice but to agree to Kevin Dawson’s request.

"Send me the hospital’s address."

"Okay."

「Half an hour later.」

Wren rushed to the hospital Kevin had mentioned. He was waiting for her at the lobby entrance and led her through the VIP access to the hospital room.

When she pushed the door open, she saw Adrian Lancaster lying on the hospital bed. He didn’t look as bad as she had imagined; his complexion was just a little pale.

With mixed feelings, Wren walked over and stopped in front of the bed.

Their eyes met.

The first words out of her mouth were an accusation. "Why did you drink so much? You just went to the Marshall family’s for dinner. What were you so happy about that you had to drink yourself into this state?"

Hearing Wren’s sarcastic taunt, Adrian Lancaster’s eyes grew inscrutable.

"Are you worried about me, or are you jealous?"

Wren was speechless. She couldn’t be bothered to answer such a childish question.

"Assistant Dawson said the hospital needs to pump your stomach. I’m here to sign the forms."

Adrian Lancaster stared at her intensely. "And then?"

"What do you mean, ’and then’?"

"After you sign."

Wren looked at him as if he were asking the obvious. "Obviously, the doctor will wheel you into the operating room and pump your stomach."

Adrian wasn’t satisfied with that answer. "I’m asking about you."

A glint flashed in Wren’s eyes as she quickly realized what he was doing. Adrian was simply testing her to see if she would stay.

"Right now, you should just worry about yourself. I’m going to find the doctor to sign the papers."

With that, she turned to leave.

But as she turned, Adrian Lancaster grabbed her wrist, stopping her.

Wren looked back, about to say something, but with a sudden cry of alarm, she lost her balance and fell right into Adrian Lancaster’s arms, landing on top of him.

The compromising position made Wren flush with anger and embarrassment. "What are you doing? Are you crazy?! This is a hospital!"

She struggled to get up, but Adrian wouldn’t let go. A half-smile played on his lips as he watched her angry, helpless state, like a hunter toying with its captured prey.

Wren’s mind went blank for a second, and then she realized she had been tricked.

"Adrian Lancaster, you tricked me!"
