Chapter 26 - Sunny Day

42 Millbrook Street.

The following day, Abel woke up fresh and full of life.

It was a new day, a new life, a new beginning!

He lay on his bed, staring at the uneven ceiling of his bedroom with a foolish smile on his face. Life had been miserable for him ever since he transmigrated into this strange world.

For the first time, in what seemed like a very long time, he was able to smile so happily.

He raised his hand and watched it clench into a fist.

"Nah." He shook his head. "It's not the same feeling I had back when I was fighting the nameless monster."

In the battle against that monster, he was able to instinctively utilize spirit energy to enhance his senses and augment his physique.

But now he was unable to no matter how much he tried.

"Hmm, but Mr. Kensington did say that it will take some time for the spirit energy to truly assimilate with my body," he murmured.

He recalled the embarrassing moment when he jumped at the glass wall of the observation chamber, and then miserably fell to the ground, bleeding from his nose.

"Ugh, so this was the reason why my Hallmark didn't work." Abel couldn't help but lightly slap his forehead.

And when he recalled Emily Thompson unable to stop laughing when he made a fool of himself last night, he felt even more embarrassed.

"Forget it," he grumbled as he got off the bed, stretching his limbs for a good few moments.

It was late last night when Abel had entered and returned from the Spirit Crucible, so John Kensington had given him his calling card, and asked him to meet him today.

After all, now that he had become an Occultist, he had to officially register with the Ministry.

Thinking about the Ministry of Occult Affairs, and the hidden supernatural world, Abel was very fascinated by it. Something that he'd only seen on television or read about in books had now become a reality for him.

"I still can't believe all of this is happening," he muttered to himself as he walked to his study table.

The broken hand mirror lay on it, amongst other things. He picked it up and saw his reflection in it.

"Abel Bishop," he softly muttered with a smile.

He then pressed his index finger against the surface of the broken mirror. Although his finger didn't pass through the reflective surface, it was able to create ripples on it.

This caused Abel's smile to widen. He was still in slight disbelief that he was even able to use such supernatural abilities, to begin with.

He had grown up reading comics, manga, and web novels. So naturally he was ecstatic to learn that he could use mystical powers just like those characters in fiction.

And then there's also my second Hallmark, he thought.

The one where my spirit or soul, or whatever you call it, leaves my body... How cool!

He sat down on the chair and silently pondered about his Hallmarks. Both were fantastic abilities, and there were so many different things he could think of that he could do with these abilities.

But Abel quickly shook his head, thinking to himself, I should take it slow as Mr. Kensington said. I need to learn to be patient. I shouldn't jump into the pool before learning how to swim.

Gradually, his smile faded and his expression turned solemn. Very solemn.

He placed the mirror back on the table and then opened the drawer.

Inside, he found the mysterious coin!

Abel recalled the warning that the previous owner of this body had given him when he went to that strange place deep within the core of his body.

Beware of the coin!

Abel's lips curled up into a bitter smile as he thought to himself, But it returns every time I try to get rid of it. What do I even do?

It's a good thing I didn't tell them about it last night. I don't know what Mr. Kensington and the rest would have done if they found this coin on me.

It's related to the previous Abel's death and my transmigration. I can't disclose its existence to anyone else... Not yet.

He grabbed the darkened silver coin that had a skull on one side and a four-leaf clover on the other and walked toward the window.

Without hesitation, he opened the window and tossed the coin as far as he could. Then, he shut the window and returned to his seat.

He closed his eyes for a couple of seconds, then gazed at the drawer

The coin had returned.

Abel didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Fuckin' hell..."

He couldn't help but wonder if the numerous near-death experiences that he faced inside the Spirit Crucible were also a result of this coin.

But then, if that was so, he shouldn't have made it out of that mystical dimension too.

The more I think about it, the more my head hurts. It'd be better if I could learn some occult knowledge and then try to figure out the mystery behind this cursed coin.

His gaze was then drawn to a calling card kept on the table. It was John Kensington's. Abel reached out for the card and looked at it, feeling slightly surprised.

"These guys are really secretive," he muttered to himself. "I still can't believe this is where they operate out of."

Henry had mentioned to him that there were two other containment sites other than the East Newport Shipping & Customs House.

However, the place that John Kensington had instructed him to come was neither of them. It was a completely different establishment—also quite well-known publicly—that served as their main base of operations.

No one would have thought that such a place served as the headquarters for the Ministry's Occultists in Newport, Abel mused to himself.

He got up from the chair and headed downstairs to wash himself. After several minutes, he returned to his bedroom and got dressed.

Abel wore his best clothes since today was the day he would be officially joining the Ministry of Occult Affairs.

Meaning, he would finally be employed!

As he looked at his simple, second-hand, and slightly worn garments, his lips started to twitch. "The first thing I'm gonna do when I receive some money is get some nice clothes. Yeah... I hope I get some kind of advance payment or something."

Despite the previous Abel receiving money from his brother every month, he used to live miserly. Well, the current Abel couldn't blame him much since he was cursed with misfortune by that damned coin in the months leading to his death.

The debt is paid, he suddenly recalled the words that echoed inside his mind when he first held the cursed coin.

That should mean something, right?

He sighed while shaking his head.

Only time will tell.

Abel put on his top hat and finally left the house. Although the place he was going to was more than thirty minutes away, he still chose to walk it.

With his hands in his pocket and an excited smile on his face, he strutted towards his destination, all the while singing cheerfully.

"It's a sunny day! Oh, oh, oh, oh! It's so bright, so bright, so bright~"

...

Around thirty minutes later, Abel finally arrived at his destination. He stood before a three-story tall building made of dark limestone.

When he looked at the engraved company crest above the massive double oak doors, he found himself speechless for a few moments.

No one would have guessed that this building was even remotely related to a group of individuals who wielded supernatural abilities.

Kensignton & Blythe Commercial Trust.

Publicly, it operated as a conventional financial institution offering business loans, insurance policies, and investment services to local merchants, industrialists, and shipowners.

But secretly...

It was the covert front for the Ministry of Occult Affairs' operations in Newport!
