Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 260: She is His Greatest Blessing in This Life
"Jiajia, I’m thinking of braising this beef and making sauce beef. With the leftover broth, I can make tea eggs. What do you think?" Qin Kaize suggested as he organized the ingredients, starting preparations for dishes that would take longer.
"Sounds good! But let’s focus on lunch first. How about corn and spare ribs stew? You decide on the rest. Four dishes and one soup should be enough for the six of us. Let’s try to finish by noon, and we can prepare more in the afternoon," Su Yijia replied without looking up.
Without a refrigerator, she worried about food spoiling. It was better to prepare less and finish it all at one meal than to risk leftovers going bad. She kept five pounds of anchovies for frying and washed the remaining twenty-five pounds with water. After draining them, she poured them into a newly purchased jar.
"666, is there a way to speed up the pickling process?" Su Yijia asked uncertainly.
The fish sauce fermentation process typically took eighteen months. Although it wouldn’t be ready for this batch of raw pickled food, the sooner she started, the sooner they could enjoy it.
[Yes, just give these fish a thorough bath with the Spirit Spring Water before pickling. But remember, the pickled fish need to be buried and should not be eaten.] 666 replied softly.
Ever since it had been repeatedly threatened and warned, 666 had learned its lesson. Wherever it could lend a hand, it no longer dared to be stingy or drag its feet, all in a desperate attempt to salvage its crumbling reputation.
Su Yijia, fully satisfied with its newfound efficiency, couldn’t help but smile.
Standing nearby, Qin Kaize watched as she fished the anchovies out of the vat, puzzled. Just as he was about to ask what was wrong, he noticed a stream of clear water flowing from between her two fingers.
Though he had long known that his little wife possessed a mysterious system, witnessing such an extraordinary scene still left him uneasy every time, as if she might vanish before his eyes at any moment.
"Jiajia?" he called softly.
"What’s up?" she responded, not stopping the flow of water and looking up at him.
Seeing the worry on his stern face, she explained in a voice only they could hear, "I’m making some fish sauce for seasoning. It takes eighteen months, so I’m using the Spirit Spring Water to speed it up. It’ll be ready by tomorrow afternoon."
Qin Kaize had never heard of fish sauce but figured it must be something special if his wife was going through so much trouble. Even though he couldn’t help with the Spirit Spring Water, he wanted to assist.
He bent down and kissed her on the cheek. "Honey, just make whatever you want. Those guys will eat anything. I just want to introduce you and show off my amazing wife. You’re the highlight, not the dishes."
Su Yijia’s ears turned red, and she playfully glared at him. "Don’t be silly. Someone might see."
"I can kiss my wife if I want. So what if people see? We’re all family here," Qin Kaize leaned in closer, his tone playful as he nuzzled against her. As long as he wasn’t flaunting it outside, no one would accuse him of breaking any rules.
Flustered and annoyed, Su Yijia pushed him away, speeding up her work. After thoroughly washing each anchovy, she drained the water and placed them back into the vat. Carefully, she added salt in a two-to-one ratio, mixing it evenly with the fish before covering the top with a thick layer of salt. Finally, she sealed the vat with oil paper.
Tugging on Qin Kaize’s sleeve, she said, "Honey, can you help me move the vat to the courtyard?"
Although she had the strength to carry it herself, the sight would be anything but graceful, and she didn’t want to leave such an unflattering image in his mind. Besides, when it came to household tasks, it was only right to involve her husband. After all, it was their shared home, and she wanted him to feel a sense of involvement too.
"Sure!" Qin Kaize replied tenderly. As he bent to lift the jar, Gao Huabin walked in with some items.
Seeing Qin Kaize lifting the large jar, Gao Huabin quickly set his things aside and rushed over to help. "Boss, you’re just recovering. Let me handle this."
"I can handle it." Qin Kaize stepped back a little. He knew his body well. Before, lifting a jar like this would’ve been manageable, though it would still feel a bit heavy. But now, picking it up felt as light as holding a cloud.
"No, no! What if something happens? My skin’s thick, I can handle this kind of task," Gao Huabin interjected, stepping forward and wrapping his arms around the jar.
Qin Kaize narrowed his eyes slightly before releasing his hold. Though Gao Huabin had taken a Great Strength Pill, it was clear he still had to put in some effort to bear the weight. It wasn’t heavy, but it certainly wasn’t as light as it had felt in Qin Kaize’s hands--more like the weight of a pillow. Definitely not the same sensation he’d experienced.
"Alright, then put it out in the courtyard where the sun’s the strongest. Be careful, don’t drop it," Qin Kaize cautioned, frowning as he gave an extra reminder, worried that Gao Huabin might be careless.
Once Gao Huabin was gone, he turned and pulled the little girl behind him into his embrace.
"I took the same power pill as everyone else, but why does it feel like the effects are different?" Qin Kaize asked, confused.
Su Yijia smiled, her eyes glinting with understanding. "The power pill is the same, but the way it repairs your body varies depending on the damage. When we take this medicine, it enhances the parts of our bodies that were previously injured to their strongest state. For example, my grandparents used to have weak stomachs, but after taking it, they can now handle any food without issue. Gao Huabin had a problem with one of his leg bones, so after using the pill, that bone has become incredibly strong."
She continued, her tone softening, "But you’re different. Your entire body, including your nervous system and brain, was damaged. When you took the pill, your body went through a full-scale enhancement--it’s like you’ve been forced to evolve."
With a hint of admiration, she added, "I’ve even thought about taking it myself to strengthen everything, but I’m not brave enough to endure the kind of injuries you did. So, this opportunity isn’t something everyone gets. It’s like the old saying, ’a blessing in disguise.’ You’re truly fortunate."
Qin Kaize’s breathing grew heavier with emotion. He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss on Su Yijia’s smooth forehead. "Yes, meeting you has been my greatest fortune."
If it hadn’t been for the schemes of the Qin family, he wouldn’t have had the chance to marry Yijia. Without her, he might never have uncovered the truth behind his mother’s death or realized that Uncle Xia was actually his father. More importantly, he wouldn’t have been able to bring Qin Zongyao and Wei Shufen to justice so openly and honorably, sending them to prison and earning the contempt of everyone around them—while still protecting his own reputation.
For years, he had harbored deep hatred for those two people, but he never imagined he’d be able to experience such complete satisfaction in seeing their downfall. Even more unexpectedly, he had found himself loving someone so wholeheartedly and discovered that family life could be warm, harmonious, and full of hope.
Su Yijia had given him a future to look forward to, and for that, he was deeply grateful.
