Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 258: The Already Mentally Unstable Old Mrs Niu
For people like her, Su Yijia didn’t even bother to pay attention, not even willing to give her a glance. But Old Mrs Niu didn’t understand what it meant to be sensible. Seeing that no one paid her any mind, she forcefully squeezed her way in and even reached out to rummage through the items on the cart.
Grandma Lin was very anxious. She wanted to stop her but remembered that Niu lived next door and her family had a high position. She could only endure it.
Su Yijia, considering this, thought that Old Mrs Niu would gossip if she didn’t see clearly what they bought. More importantly, the old woman was elderly, and if any conflict arose, and she sat on the ground, it would be troublesome. After all, this was the team, not a place where she could assert her dominance easily.
Seeing that Old Mrs Niu’s hand was about to touch the basket covered with a basin, a large hand suddenly grabbed her wrist tightly.
"Old Mrs Niu, what we buy and what we do are our family’s business," Qin Kaize emphasized without any politeness.
In the Niu family compound, the old lady had long grown accustomed to wielding her seniority as a weapon, often bullying the more timid young wives. Even when one of their husbands returned, she would adopt the posture of an elder, offering a few words of unsolicited advice.
The half-hearted flattery she received always filled her with a sense of pride. But now, being publicly undermined, her confidence wavered in an instant.
Retracting her hand, Old Mrs Niu muttered softly, "Really, it’s just some things from the supply and marketing cooperative, not rare items. I just saw you two with all these bags and thought you didn’t know how to live frugally."
"Even if we don’t know how to live frugally, that’s our business. Moreover, my legitimate elders are right here. If there’s anything I do wrong, they will educate me, and it doesn’t concern you, Old Mrs Niu," Su Yijia also retorted.
Since Qin Kaize had already taken the lead in offending her, she didn’t hold back either.
Old Mrs Niu, just scolded by Qin Kaize, still looked weak. But upon hearing Su Yijia’s voice, she immediately perked up. However, Qin Kaize, like a mountain, blocked her view of attacking his wife.
Old Mrs Niu thought Qin Kaize was meddling in women’s affairs. How could a man get involved in women’s matters and not be ashamed? Yet, she dared not vent her anger at Qin Kaize. She could only move aside, muttering curses under her breath.
After everyone went inside, she spat in frustration. "A man who only knows how to protect his wife won’t achieve anything."
Before she could finish speaking, both Su Yijia and Qin Kaize poked their heads out, their sharp, icy stares cutting through her like blades, as if one glance could slice through her flesh.
Terrified, she gasped, biting down hard on her tongue, the pain making her cry out in agony. Serves her right! 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
Su Yijia let out a mocking snort but refrained from saying anything further, avoiding giving anyone a reason to accuse her of spreading superstitions.
Once the pain subsided, the old lady had no desire to meddle any longer. With her tail between her legs, she scurried back to her own house.
"How rude! Always minding others’ business!" Grandma Lin, while organizing the purchased items, muttered angrily.
"Old Mrs Niu is notorious in the team for meddling. Besides her son’s high position, the main reason is that during the famine, only her son survived. Her daughter-in-law had four daughters and could no longer give birth due to health issues, making her perpetually dissatisfied. No big auntie or young wife in the team likes her. So if there’s ever a conflict, no one will help her. At most, they’ll just watch the drama unfold," Gao Huabin gossiped.
"How do you know this so well?" Su Yijia was incredulous.
"Not just me, our leader knows even more," Gao Huabin said, glancing at Qin Kaize.
Qin Kaize, uncomfortable discussing this, had no habit of badmouthing others. But seeing his wife’s expectant eyes, he continued, "Commissar Mi is quite protective of his wife. Old Mrs Niu can’t control her daughter-in-law, and the family’s money is managed by her daughter-in-law.”
Generally, only wives and children follow the soldiers here. Old Mrs Niu would rely on her seniority and her son’s position to act superior.
"Commissar Mi doesn’t control her?" Grandma Lin was intrigued.
Qin Kaize, feeling awkward, pursed his lips, "He does, but often doesn’t know about it. Those aunties, out of respect for Commissar Mi being her son, don’t want to escalate things. A few words aren’t much of a loss, so they just ignore it. By the time it reaches Commissar Mi, she has already meddled in many families’ affairs. But you don’t have to endure her. If there’s any conflict, I’m always on your side."
He tenderly patted his wife’s head. He noticed she was annoyed by Old Mrs Niu but didn’t react to avoid making things difficult for him and Uncle Xia in the unit. As a man, he couldn’t let his wife suffer for his sake.
"I just think she’s old. If she falls, it would be hard to explain," Su Yijia frowned.
"Sending her to the hospital for an examination would clarify if there are injuries," Qin Kaize wasn’t worried. If Old Mrs Niu kept causing trouble, her son would have to pay for it.
"Fine, if she causes trouble next time, I won’t be polite," Su Yijia agreed contentedly. Looking at the seafood in the kitchen, she realized they were missing a few ingredients.
"Gao, can you go to the supply and marketing cooperative again and buy all the oysters and phoenix-tail fish? Also, get a big jar," Su Yijia had to handle other ingredients and couldn’t go herself.
"Okay," Gao Huabin took the money and tickets, leaving with the cart pusher.
Qin Kaize wouldn’t care about the spending; a man’s earnings were for his wife. Seeing Grandma Lin disapprovingly question the quantity, he quickly intervened.
"Grandma, whatever Jiajia buys is needed."
"But buying so much might be criticized. Extravagance is also bad," Grandma Lin was worried about the strict team discipline.
