Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 229: Buying Medicine from the Village Auntie
"You wretch! You’re the one who leaked our information!" The man growled like a beast, struggling to lunge at Su Yijia. However, he had barely moved half a meter before Su Yijia kicked him in the shoulder, sending him flying over two meters away. His shoulder sagged in an unnatural way, clearly broken from the kick.
Su Yijia rolled up her sleeves, smirking as she walked over to him. "Weren’t you so arrogant when you hit me yesterday? Now you’re nothing but a dead dog," she sneered, slapping him hard across the face. Then she backhanded him again, drawing blood from his mouth.
The man glared at her, his eyes full of hate. As he opened his mouth, blood mixed with two teeth fell out. Su Yijia wanted to hit him more but decided against it, thinking of the blood on his face and the potential diseases he might have.
"Forget it. He only slapped me once, and I’ve slapped him twice. We’re even," she said, pretending to be magnanimous. Gao Huabin breathed a sigh of relief. With her strength, he feared she might kill the man if she hit him more.
After the man was taken away, Xia Weiguo returned with urgency. "Jiajia, we’ve completed the sweep of the village. All suspicious individuals have been detained. You still need to buy things, right? I’ll send these people away and bring back the test results in the afternoon," he explained, clearly pressed for time but still making an effort to inform her.
"Uncle Xia, don’t worry. I’ll gather everything I need as soon as possible," Su Yijia replied sweetly, appearing innocent and harmless, a stark contrast to her earlier fierceness.
The group packed up and hiked for an hour and a half back to the village where they had initially stayed. The village head and residents were anxiously waiting at the entrance. Seeing Su Yijia, they rushed forward.
"Comrade Su, are you alright? This was our fault for not being vigilant enough, letting those bad guys infiltrate and harm you," the village head apologized repeatedly, bowing with the village secretary.
"It’s fine. I know it wasn’t intentional. I was just a bit scared but was rescued in the end," Su Yijia smiled politely. Her words were civil, but there was an underlying tone of blame that was hard to miss.
This made the village head, the village secretary, and the accompanying villagers even more anxious. They wanted to ask about the medicinal herbs but hesitated, seeing her cold expression, afraid of being refused outright.
After walking a few steps toward the Educated Youth Center, Su Yijia seemed to remember something. "Uncle Xia is getting the test report. Once that’s confirmed, our responsibilities here will end. So, before leaving, I want to gather all the necessary medicinal herbs. It would be better to do it now than to rush later," she said indifferently.
"Take as much time as you need. There’s an empty room at the Educated Youth Center. You can stay as long as you need," the village head quickly offered.
But Su Yijia sighed, looking a bit apprehensive. "No, I’ve been quite scared and feel a bit unwell. I want to finish our work here quickly and then go to the hospital," she said.
Hearing that she wanted to go to the hospital, the villagers felt even more guilty and worried.
The village chief’s wife quickly chimed in, "Comrade Su, I’ve already gathered some mushrooms from our village. The other aunties will go to nearby villages to collect more for you. You also need some medicinal herbs, right? Just tell me what you need. If we have them, we’ll definitely get them for you."
"Thank you, Auntie Chen. Please come with me to the Educated Youth Center, and I’ll write down everything I need," Su Yijia said, her smile finally warming a bit.
Auntie Chen followed her without hesitation. The Educated Youth Center was eerily quiet, with no one in sight, clearly shaken by the previous day’s events.
"Those educated youths, really, you can never tell someone’s true nature," Auntie Chen muttered angrily.
Once inside the room, she leaned in conspiratorially, "Comrade Su, you wouldn’t believe it. That Ding youth who slept in the same room as you and that Xia youth, they’re no good. Poor Miss Yuan was deceived into being with him. A doctor came yesterday, and Miss Yuan is pregnant! She wasn’t involved in anything bad, nor did she know what was happening, but her life is ruined now. Unmarried and pregnant, others could just marry, but she’ll be sent to a farm. She might even lose her life."
"So both of them were involved! But that tunnel in the stove, it can’t just be the two of them, right?" Su Yijia feigned realization, probing further.
The village chief’s wife fell silent, looking embarrassed. After a long pause, she finally spoke, "It was Old Huang, who built the stove for them. We don’t know when he was bought off, but he’s been taken away along with his family for questioning."
Su Yijia raised an eyebrow, "You need to be careful about such things. If your testing is up to standard, the herbs you grow will be very valuable and must be protected."
"Comrade Su is right. We’ll be extra cautious from now on," Auntie Chen promised earnestly. They were willing to do anything to secure their future in medicinal herb cultivation.
After writing down the needed items, Su Yijia handed the list to Auntie Chen. "I need 10-year-old Polygonum multiflorum and ginseng that’s at least 100 years old, preferably 300 years old. Additionally, I need 90 live poisonous snakes, toads, scorpions, centipedes, and geckos."
Auntie Chen was pleased at first, especially knowing they had a 500-year-old ginseng root at home, kept for emergencies to sell for money. She also knew several nearby villages had ginseng, though unsure if any had been sold. Ten-year-old Polygonum multiflorum was abundant in the area.
However, upon hearing about the poisonous creatures, she instinctively wanted to refuse. Yet, considering the recent turmoil, she realized that denying this request could jeopardize their village’s chance to grow medicinal herbs.
Struggling with her hesitation, she finally nodded, "We’ll do our best to gather everything you need, Comrade Su."
