Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 179: Being Targeted by Strange People
The nearby individuals quickly crowded over, pretending to carefully inspect the photo. But in reality, they had seen this photo countless times. Everyone knew that the girl in the photo was someone their leader held dear.
The leader’s first wife got divorced because she wanted to throw away this picture. The second wife bore some resemblance to the girl in the photo. To marry this lookalike, their leader had put in a lot of effort ten years ago.
So what was the current situation? Did they find someone who looked more alike, or did they find the actual person? After all, the photo was over twenty years old. Perhaps the person in the picture had aged significantly by now?
They quickly glanced at the photo, then hurriedly rushed in the direction the man had pointed.
Su Yijia heard the chaotic footsteps approaching behind her and rapidly getting closer. Without hesitation, she darted into an alley.
"666, tell me which house is empty?"
[The third house on the right after the turn ahead.]
Quickly sprinting, she took the turn before the others entered the alley and directly leaped to catch the edge of a courtyard wall. With a little effort, she vaulted over.
"Where is she?"
As they ran in, they found no trace of Su Yijia in any of the alley’s three paths, causing them to become anxious.
They promptly split into two groups and dashed toward the two exits from the alley. However, they soon returned to the fork, each wearing a desperate expression.
"Did that girl really run this fast?"
"Could she have noticed that we were chasing her and escaped?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Thinking about facing their leader’s reprimand later, they felt agitated to the point of losing their minds.
After a while, the man entered with a dark expression.
"Did she manage to escape?" The man gritted his teeth and questioned.
Those people were frightened and stammered, "Yes..."
Before they could finish, the person closest to the man took a hard kick to the stomach. He fell to his knees with a thud, his face turning as white as a sheet.
"Leader, rest assured. As long as this person is in Hu City, we’ll turn everything upside down until we find her."
The people quickly assured him. The man’s ice-cold gaze swept over them before he grudgingly stated, "Three days. I’m giving you three days. If you can’t find her, don’t blame me for being ruthless."
"Yes, yes, yes! Leader, we’ll get it done, you can count on us! There’s never been someone in Hu City that we couldn’t track down!"
They didn’t dare to hesitate, let alone negotiate further.
Leaning against the wall, Su Yijia waited until they left. After waiting for about fifteen minutes, Su Yijia leaped out of the yard.
So the person who had just targeted her was Yin Linjiang, the one responsible for her family’s ruin and devastation all those years ago? She hadn’t sought retribution from him yet, and he was already focusing on her. Fortunately, her previous family didn’t give her any money or take her to places like the cooperatives and department stores, or else she would have attracted Yin Linjiang’s attention much earlier.
Lin Cuifen didn’t hand her over to him, probably fearing that this lunatic would blame them for her mother’s death and do who knows what.
Feeling a headache coming on, Su Yijia decided to quickly pack her things and head to Yun Province. Yin Linjiang might even target Qin Kaize as part of seeking revenge against her family. Not willing to delay outside, Su Yijia lowered her head, swiftly hopped on a bus, and returned home.
"Grandpa, Grandma, take a look. What else do we need to pack for the travel to Yun Province? We’ll leave a note for Zhu when he arrives tonight to buy the remaining items together." Su Yijia entered the house and hurriedly placed the items on the stone table, pouring herself a large glass of cold water and drinking it down. Her mood just slightly calmed down. Even though there was still a significant unresolved issue at home, she couldn’t afford to ignore the matter with Yin Linjiang.
However, before she could say anything, Xia Weiguo pushed the courtyard door open and walked in.
"Yijia, I’ve asked around. At that time, the fruits he bought were two types, apples and peaches, just when they were in season. Wei Shufen looked a bit guilty when asked, but she stubbornly insisted that she didn’t harm Ze’s mother. My men are still interrogating her over there."
His voice was filled with seething anger, and his face twitched slightly. He was angry at Qin Zongyao and Wei Shufen, but he was more upset with himself. Why did he follow the Miss’s arrangements and sign up for the unit back then? Why, when things improved slightly, didn’t he come back and clear up everything? Even Yijia had managed to put the matter to this extent, and he had been relieved it wasn’t them who caused the Miss’s death.
Fortunately, Ze was a smart and resolute child, insisting on continuing the investigation. A mix of regret, guilt, and resentment made Xia Weiguo’s head feel like it was about to explode.
But he couldn’t fall now. He had to uncover the truth of what happened back then.
"So, what was the cause of my mother-in-law’s death back then? What did the hospital say?" Su Yijia had a guess in her mind, but she wanted to confirm it again.
Xia Weiguo’s face displayed a brief look of reluctance. He glanced discreetly at Qin Kaize to make sure his emotions were unaffected before saying, "When Kaize’s mother gave birth to him, she had already weakened her body. Later, taking care of Kaize depleted her health even further. By the onset of autumn, catching a cold, no matter the medication, her condition didn’t improve. Seeing her health deteriorating rapidly, she was taken to the hospital, given injections, but couldn’t survive the third day."
This explanation seemed plausible, and there appeared to be no issue. From getting medical attention to consistently taking medication, and the subsequent worsening of the disease, it’s not surprising that no one would raise any suspicions.
However, Kaize, at the age of three, should have been eating solid food for nearly a year, while his mother had been recovering her health. It was just a minor cold, and she immediately sought medical care and received medication. She even went to the hospital for an injection, so it shouldn’t have escalated to such a severe state. This wasn’t some small village with a back-alley doctor. It was the urban center of Hu City, not to mention that even decades earlier, it was known for having some of the best medical facilities.
Many people with illnesses would come to the hospitals in Hu City seeking life-saving treatments. It was highly improbable that even a minor cold couldn’t be treated.
"Perhaps you could use apple seeds to threaten them. These seeds contain amygdalin, and approximately 20 apple seeds can be lethal. However, at this point, there’s likely no evidence, only bluffing might work, and it might not yield any results in the end. If you can’t intimidate them, maybe I can go instead," Su Yijia suggested directly.
Since they had a normal procedure, the slightest deviation was unacceptable. However, she could adopt the guise of an ordinary visitor and have a good conversation with Wei Shufen. But when it came to Qin Zongyao, there might not be much to discuss. Without concrete evidence, he wouldn’t admit anything.
