Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 106: Finally Regained Freedom
Grandpa Su irritably pushed her hand away, warning in a stern tone, "That’s enough! Stop causing trouble! Do you really want to jeopardize your son’s job?"
Upon hearing her husband’s stern words, Grandma Su realized there was no room for negotiation in this matter. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing an official job in the city, which was due to her own granddaughter.
"Oh, my goodness! What kind of curse has our Su family brought upon itself? How could we have such a granddaughter?" With her hands raised, Grandma Su wailed and pounded her chest. "I must find that little brat and make her pay for what she’s done. We can’t let this go so easily!"
"Stop!" Su’s father and Lin Jiayao shouted in unison. Both of them looked frightened for a moment but quickly tried to hide their concern.
"Mom, now that Yijia has married into the Qin family, the entire Qin family defers to her. If we go to find her and provoke her, it would only give her another opportunity to harass us. The Qin family has a significant social status, her husband has connections, and the people she knows are influential. Currently, it’s only Cuifen who got caught. If we create more trouble, we might end up in the same situation," Su’s father patiently continued to persuade.
"So, we should just accept this and swallow the bitter pill?" Su’s mother questioned indignantly.
Su’s father didn’t respond. He simply stared at her, conveying his message without words. Grandma Su, infuriated, started cursing loudly. Even the onlookers couldn’t deter her from venting her frustration.
After living in the countryside for so many years, and with her son, daughter, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law all moving to the city and gaining employment, she had become a celebrated figure in the village. It had been almost twenty years since she had been subjected to such a frustrating situation, so it was impossible for her to accept it.
Su’s father, with his almost worn out patience, escorted Grandma Su back to the countryside. Su’s father didn’t stay. He returned to the city right away. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
What Su’s father didn’t know was that the following morning, Su Yijia also took a minibus and returned to the village. This village was not the same as the one with Professor Li. There was a north-south division between them, so she felt no pressure in visiting. In the early morning, she left home, took a public bus, transferred to a minibus station, and eventually arrived in the village.
The journey covered more than 100 kilometers and took a full four hours. She didn’t arrive until nearly noon. Despite the exhaustion, she felt relieved that no one was following her. It seemed that the investigations against her had temporarily come to a halt. It had been mostly confirmed that the past events were all coincidences, and she was a good and loyal comrade.
As for her so-called biological father, she still intended to search for him. For the sake of safety, even though there was no problem with her, they still needed to check on his end, to see if he ever came to Hu City to get in contact with her, or any signs of his being influenced or bribed by external parties.
After getting off the minibus, she felt a bit queasy, but the sight of rolling hills and golden rice paddies lifted her spirits. Su Yijia happily opened her arms and embraced the air filled with freedom.
Soybeans and corn—she was coming! This was the village, and collecting these crops here was more convenient than on the black market. However, these two items weren’t that easy to acquire, except from the households that stopped eating vegetables and dedicated their land to these crops. After all, more than fifty years later, soybean yields were only around 250 kilograms per mu, and corn yields were even less.
Nevertheless, every family would likely grow some, and she could ask several households. Thankfully, she had the foresight to bring her bamboo basket.
"You’re the eldest granddaughter of the Su family, right? Why did you suddenly come back? Didn’t we hear that you had already gotten married?" Someone at the village entrance stopped Su Yijia and greeted her warmly.
"Su’s eldest granddaughter, you’ve been living well in the city, but remember, Xiangwang Village is your roots. You can’t forget us. Are there any eligible bachelors in the city you know? How about introducing them to my daughter? I’m not just going to push any bad daughter off on you to introduce. My daughter is healthy, and she has a big butt. She’s not only a hard worker, but she’ll definitely bear big, healthy children. Whoever marries my daughter will surely be grateful to you for introducing such a great wife to them."
The woman finished speaking and even gave Su Yijia a meaningful glance. Though she didn’t say anything directly, her clear disdain showed that she considered Su Yijia physically weak with a small butt – clearly not suitable for bearing children.
"Auntie, don’t say that... I didn’t go out much at home before, and now I stay by my husband’s side every day. I don’t have the chance to meet other men. If you want me to introduce a husband for your daughter, it would be better to spend a bit of money to hire a matchmaker from the city," Su Yijia playfully deflected the request.
This woman was scheming to have her introduce a husband for her daughter without paying any matchmaker fees, all while trying to make it seem like she was helping Su Yijia build connections with her husband’s friends.
"The way you’re talking, so tricky," the woman responded sarcastically.
Su Yijia had no intention of wasting time with her and simply walked past her into the village. The woman, watching her go, muttered, "Who does she think she is. She actually thinks that just because she lives in the city and married a city guy, her life is better than ours. Look at those legs of hers, it’s clear her husband doesn’t even touch her. He clearly has no interest in her."
"Of course he’s not interested! Look at her legs; how can they be so agile at her age if her husband really like her?" Another woman chimed in, agreeing with the previous one.
After making their snide remarks, these women exchanged glances and then burst into triumphant laughter.
Su Yijia heard their laughter in the distance and had a feeling it was related to her. However, she paid no mind to the gossip and rumors circulating behind her back. After all, even money is disliked sometimes, not to mention she’s just a human being?
Entering the village, Su Yijia walked for a while until she spotted a man with a sunbaked dark complexion. He seemed to have just finished work in the fields and was heading back for lunch.
"Comrade, hello!" She hurriedly jogged to catch up to the man and addressed him.
The man stopped in his tracks, turning to see Su Yijia, leaving him flustered and unsure of what to do with his hands and feet.
Observing his reaction, Su Yijia decided to maintain a safe distance, about two meters apart. "Hello, I wanted to ask if you know where the midwife in the village is," she politely inquired, wearing a faint smile.
