Rotting Land: Survive-Chapter 445 - 443: Suicide Mission (Part 1)
Early the next morning, the survivors got up early for breakfast, especially the few soldiers who hadn’t slept a wink the night before.
Today is the day of action, and everyone maintained a solemn expression.
After all, this operation was not like any before, it was akin to a suicide mission.
"That’s basically the situation; everyone should stay in touch and communicate if there are any issues!" Taking advantage of mealtime, Xu Renjie purposely reiterated the important details of the operation, with special emphasis on abandoning rescue if the charge fails.
The survivors outwardly nodded in agreement, though some in their hearts were not convinced.
At least, the soldiers from the Sharp Blade Company were already prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice.
After breakfast, the survivors immediately engaged in pre-battle preparations.
This operation would see them split into two groups.
One group, consisting of 4 people, would charge the stadium; Li Xiaoxin was responsible for operating the loader, while Xu Renjie and the remaining two soldiers were tasked with search operations along the way.
The second group would maneuver around the stadium, led by Zhao Yunhai with Wang Zhongyu driving, Tang Xiaoquan, Hu Xiaodong, and three soldiers would be mobile in the vehicle, mainly responsible for establishing contact with the first team and keeping abreast of the situation inside the stadium.
Hand-held radios were distributed to everyone, with ten in total, two per vehicle, and the rest left at the base.
After all, it’s quality over quantity with equipment, and two radios per vehicle were enough to handle various unforeseen circumstances.
In terms of attire, to prevent attacks from Climbers, all members of the first team and several soldiers from the second team wore the soft stab-resistant suits Xu Renjie brought back yesterday, complete with stab-resistant covers, and even the heads were protected with police-looking gear.
This way, it’s not guaranteed to prevent all harm, but defending against the sneaky scratches of stray Zombies should not be a problem.
Once clothing was sorted, weaponry aside from the necessary short blades and cleavers, the steel fork Xu Renjie brought back was also to be included.
This piece is two meters long, weighing 2 kilograms, retractable, with a crescent-shaped steel head perfect for fending off climbing "Climbers."
Moreover, to better utilize the steel fork, Xu Renjie had the original blunt crescent-shaped steel head sharpened to a point.
Now, the steel fork could not only serve as a defensive weapon but could also be used to directly kill Zombies with the pointed steel head.
The first team’s equipment was basically like this, while the second team, in addition to these, was additionally equipped with riot shields based on possible situations they might encounter.
With everything set, the two groups immediately went downstairs to board their vehicles, officially commencing the assault operation.
Considering the speed of the loader, Wang Zhongyu was the first to drive away, and once the urban management vehicle left Bieyuan District, the roaring sound resounded timely.
The massive steel beast, after letting out a "skyward roar," raised its "proud head" and aggressively "stepped forward."
"HO, I definitely want to try driving one of these big guys in my lifetime!" Wang Zhongyu remarked with a sense of awe while glancing at the "monster" in the rearview mirror.
His intention was also to alleviate the tense atmosphere inside the vehicle.
Unfortunately, the nearby Tang Xiaoquan didn’t seem to appreciate it; his expression had been as rigid as a wooden figure since the start of the operation.
"Hey, hey! This is Vehicle 1 Number 1, channel test, is the signal clear? Over?" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Xu Renjie’s slightly deep voice came through the radio, followed by responses from Li Xiaoxin and Zhao Yunhai.
"Vehicle 1 Number 2, signal clear! Over!"
"Vehicle 2 Number 1, signal clear! Over!"
Steadying himself, Tang Xiaoquan hurriedly pressed the communication button to confirm, "Vehicle 2 Number 2, signal clear! Over!"
With everything confirmed okay, Wang Zhongyu consciously sped up, as staying near the loader carried significant risk; not so much the psychological pressure from being chased by a giant, but the attention its aggressive "temper" attracted as well, which was unwelcome by Wang Zhongyu.
About 25 minutes later, the urban management vehicle, which had been circling in wait, finally received a report from the loader behind.
"Attention Vehicle 2! Attention Vehicle 2! I’ve approached the stadium, preparing to implement the assault! I repeat, I’ve approached the stadium, preparing for assault! Over!"
"Vehicle 2 understood! Vehicle 2 understood! Please ensure safety! Please ensure safety! Over!"
With Zhao Yunhai’s final "over," all team members in the urban management vehicle fell silent as if punctured at critical points.
Everyone subconsciously clenched their fists, silently praying and cheering for their "Vehicle 1" companions.
Li Xiaoxin drove the vehicle slowly, not in a hurry to forcefully break through.
He trusted in the loader’s protection, convinced that no Zombie could succeed in attacking beneath the loader’s heavy body and solid Armor.
So rather than recklessly advancing and causing unnecessary accidents, it was better to proceed steadily and cautiously.
This approach also facilitated the commander and comrades on the loader to observe the terrain and locate Luo Yi and the others.
Over two days, the environment around the stadium hadn’t improved with the passage of time.
The creatures still gathered cheerfully around the streets, eagerly awaiting a gluttonous feast to descend once again.
Perhaps they themselves hadn’t anticipated how quickly happiness would come.
Because within the arrogant iron hull advancing ahead lay the delectable feast that inflamed their blood.
In an instant, the hordes of corpses stirred, and the previously idle creatures leaped towards the loader with fervor comparable to moths flying into a flame, a scene even a seasoned soldier like Li Xiaoxin found nerve-wracking.
Wave after wave of creatures were pushed down, leaving a road of debris and rotten flesh resembling tiles, mixed with viscous liquid, across the path the loader traversed.
As the South Gate approached, the carnage grew ever more severe.
The creatures appeared undeterred by their companions’ gruesome deaths, instead driven to frenzy by the quarry’s arrogance, escalating their fervent cries.
"Crack, splat, clatter!"
Listening to the continuous sounds of crushing and ripping flesh beside his ears, Xu Renjie’s expression remained unperturbed, calm to an unsettling degree.
However, if you looked into his eyes, you would see a blazing flame burning fiercely.
It was a force difficult to describe in words, representing determination, a resolution to stop at nothing until the goal was achieved.
Finally, after a 500-meter-long baptism of the crimson path, the gigantic loader arrived at the target location, in front of the South Gate.
No one knew what awaited inside the gate!
And no one knew whether there would be a chance to come out after entering!
But Xu Renjie and his soldiers had no choice; the belief of the Sharp Blade Company was that even in death, they must fall on the road of assault.
