Chapter 269: Fighting Chance

Kargas knew talking while launching a sneak attack was foolish. It removed any chances of the sneak part of the attack succeeding. That was why he only spoke when his blade already rested against the nape of Viztar’s neck. It would be too late for the dragon to react to the Dragon Slayer.

"Oh, not at all. There’s no way I could forget about the Dragon Slayer."

Viztar met Kargas’ fierce eyes without any hints of surprise. He continued laying fire on Ackster as sparks flew from the barrier that shielded his neck.

However, Viztar had underestimated the power of a Dragon Slayer, especially since Kargas had yet to mature. He just thought Kargas would be stronger, faster, and more sensitive when against dragons or their kin.

But the teeth on Kargas’ blade began digging through Viztar’s magic barrier. As a Dragon Slayer, Kargas would be useless if he couldn’t get through the impenetrable defense of dragons.

So, part of his abilities was for piercing the physical and magical defenses of dragons. It was something that only activated against what he identified as dragons. That was why he had been so frightening and dangerous when he was crazy. Everything was a dragon in his eyes.

Now that he had regained his sanity, Kargas had lost that advantage. Instead, his understanding of his abilities and his own ability to use them had grown. He was clear-headed and could make rational choices. That was why he let Ackster suffer despite his heart telling him to help him.

But the increased sharpness of his mind and abilities made Kargas’ even stronger than before when facing actual targets of his Dragon Slayer constitution.

Viztar’s pupils narrowed as he could feel Kargas’ blade reach the skin on his neck. He moved one of his hands and turned the stream of fire toward Kargas instead of Ackster. One hand was still enough to keep Ackster in place.

Kargas was forced to continue pressing forward with the dagger or dodge the fire.

He dodged. He couldn’t withstand Viztar’s magic, even with his anti-dragon defense, and there was no guarantee he could kill Viztar with that strike. Kargas had to play it safe and wear Viztar down while looking for a lethal opening.

So, instead of Viztar’s neck, Kargas ducked below the arm that reached in his direction, shifted his serrated dagger-like sword to his other hand, and sliced Viztar’s ankle. Viztar’s green flames singed the very tips of Kargas’ hair, but in exchange, Viztar landed a blow to one of Viztar’s legs. If this continued, they could destabilize him. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

However, before Kargas could celebrate, both the nick on Viztar’s neck and the cut on his ankle shone with the green light of Viztar’s fire. When the light stopped, both injuries were gone.

"Haha! You think mosquito bites like that will do anything to me? I might not be a cockroach like your friend, but I don’t die that easily!"

Viztar blasted all around him with the fire from his hand, trying to blanket the ground and air, removing any chance of Kargas dodging his flames. But with the flame spread out like that, its offense sank enough for Kargas to cut through it and aim for a cheeky attack toward Viztar’s arm.

However, Viztar met Kargas’ attack with a wide grin. Although he obscured his own vision with the flames, he could sense everything that was going on. Kargas’ attempt was naive and met with a fist enveloped in fire.

Kargas reacted quickly and blocked Viztar’s fist with the side of his weapon. Viztar sent him flying backward.

Kargas took advantage of that to put some distance between himself and Viztar so he could inspect his weapon.

It wasn’t holding up well in a fight against a true dragon, even with Kargas’ Dragon Slayer skills reinforcing it. He had a few spares but nothing that could measure up to Viztar’s level of strength.

He would have to finish this before he ran out of weapons.

Kargas sighed before gritting his teeth.

That was easier said than done.

Kargas glanced in Ackster’s direction. He was still caught in a storm of green fire. While Viztar was still keeping half a mind on keeping Ackster in check and trying to burn him alive, Kargas would have to do as much as possible.

Of course, it would also be great if Ackster could start moving again, and they could try and tag-team Viztar.

But since that didn’t seem like it would happen anytime soon, Kargas tapped into his mana a little more than before. Unfortunately, his mana was his weakest area, so he would have to be frugal with its usage, especially since Viztar was still playing around with them.

And now that Viztar had seen for himself the ease with which Kargas could cut through his magic, his guard would be raised higher than before.

Kargas charged forward, dashing, slashing, and crisscrossing through streams of green fire that burned his skin just by coming close. But the fire’s heat wasn’t its worst aspect. It was how it refused to go out, even after leaving Viztar’s influence.

Kargas had to cut off parts of his clothes as soon as they caught fire lest it spread to him. Having to do that all the time made it even more difficult to approach Viztar without risking taking a solid blow.

Thankfully, Viztar didn’t seem too keen on moving around while lambasting Ackster with increasingly hot fire, and Kargas was free to dart in and out while lashing out with his blade, leaving faint scratches on Viztar. None of the injuries he left on Viztar’s body were deep, but he left them without taking any real damage himself. But Viztar barely took any damage either since his wounds healed at once.

It was a dead battle of attrition where Viztar would undoubtedly be the victor in the end.

Kargas also had a feeling that Viztar wasn’t going all out and that he could kill both him and Ackster if he wanted to. Kargas wasn’t sure why he wasn’t doing that since he seemed pretty intent, but who was he to question Viztar giving them a fighting chance?

If there was one saving grace, it was that Kargas could feel himself grow stronger with each mark he left on Viztar’s skin. Each time he injured the dragon, his abilities as a Dragon Slayer grew.
