Road to be the Best Chess Player in the World!-Chapter 559: Sheva Makes a Blunder?!
In fact, it wasn’t just Sheva who could see Taher’s intention here. Even Bagas could notice that, even though the boy only found it suspicious, not knowing what Taher intended to do here. Still, indeed, he noticed the normal yet strange situation on the board.
"Sheva didn’t really play the Ruy-Lopez opening a lot in the past, right?" He asked, unsure.
Sarah just stayed quiet since she herself didn’t know about it. However, Master Irfan, who had been following Sheva’s journey since the beginning, nodded solemnly, knowing that the boy was correct here.
"Yes, I think he tried to use it several times in the past, before in the end switching to the Italian game." The man nodded solemnly. "It seems Taher has done a good job in his research. However, if he wants to go further, he’d better have something under his sleeve, because I am sure that this is not going to be enough to deal with Sheva."
The game went quite slowly, with both players taking their sweet time to think of each move. While Sheva was still confident with his usual blitz play, in positional warfare, one wrong move was enough to kill him, and he didn’t dare to take too much risk here.
However, the game slowly unfolded here, and it was clear that Sheva started to put pressure. Even though the computer engine still thought that it was a draw game, any normal player would sweat if they were in Taher’s situation.
After all, the two knights that Sheva had were so strong, sitting nicely to block all the way for the white pieces to get out. Taher managed to exchange them both, taking those two problematic pieces out of the equation. However, as a result, he had to allow Sheva’s two pawns to be free, roaming like crazy to get closer to the promotion square.
"Yes, this is probably the worst-case scenario for Taher." Irfan couldn’t help but sigh, looking at the screen with a complicated gaze. "He has done his best here, but unfortunately, Sheva is always one step ahead of him."
His tone was so confident as he didn’t consider that Sheva would let this advantage slip. In his mind, in this kind of situation, there was no way Sheva would make a mistake. The boy’s conversion rate was so ridiculously high that it seemed Irfan couldn’t remember the last time the boy choked a win in this position.
Coincidentally enough, Taher also had the same thought. The man had both hands on his head; the frown was so deep that his eyebrows met on the bridge of his nose. Saying that he had a headache was a massive understatement, as he felt his brain was burning right now. If he were in a cartoon, he would’ve been able to see the smoke coming out of his head right now.
’How could the situation get worse so quickly?’ He groaned. ’I swear, it is just a moment ago that I tried to fight back, but how could all of his pieces gather so quickly under my nose like this?’
In fact, Taher knew that this was one of Sheva’s best qualities. The boy could create an attack out of nothing, turning a dead-ass draw game into his advantage without his opponent even noticing. And when it was too late, the opponent would suffer the same fate as Taher right now, getting suffocated from all directions.
Sheva himself was confident right now. Hell, he even started strolling around, wanting to see his competitors.
’So, my next opponent tomorrow should be this Tin Jingyao, huh?’ Sheva muttered under his breath when he saw the game on table 2. ’It is a pity that Arfan couldn’t hold his own ground, but in this situation, there was no way in hell he could survive.’
In his mind, Sheva had already calculated which direction he should research on his opponent tomorrow. However, this arrogance, coupled with a short episode of his daydreaming here, almost cost him his current game.
Yeah, as his mind wandered around, his hand moved unconsciously, and only after he put down the piece, though, did the boy finally realize what a huge mistake he made.
’Fuck! No, that is not the square I want to put my bishop to!’ He widened his eyes in panic.
Unfortunately, his failure to put on a poker face when he made a mistake was seen by Taher, and the man knew instantly that something big was happening on the board right now. True enough, after thinking for the whole ten minutes alone just for one move, the man spotted the difference here, and made the best move possible to retaliate against that mistake.
"Oh! What is going on here?!" Bagas shrieked. "Out of nowhere! The advantage is gone immediately! What. Is. Going. On. Here?!" He shouted dramatically.
"I cannot believe that Sheva makes such a basic mistake here." Irfan had his jaw dropped in disbelief. "This endgame should be easy to convert! He has to put his bishop behind Taher’s rook, and right after that, get that rook with the bishop exchange, making it two rooks versus a rook and a knight. But what do we have here? He threatens the rook from the front, allowing it to run away without any consequence! Now, the game is back to a draw again! What a plot twist!"
Of course, the one who reacted the worst was Sheva. He groaned silently, putting his hands to cover his face. Hell, if allowed, he would’ve banged his head on the table already, repeatedly.
’Idiot! What a fucking idiot!’ He berated himself inwardly. ’What the hell am I doing here? How could I make such a rookie mistake?! This is the worst game ever!’
Unfortunately, no matter how things turned out, he still had to continue the game. So, even with his mood dropping to rock bottom, the boy shook his head strongly, slapping his cheek lightly to wake him up from this nightmare.
He also didn’t forget to take a look at the clock, and watching his time burning so quickly when he was in his depressed state, the boy couldn’t help but click his tongue in annoyance.
’Tch! What a hassle! I only have 14 minutes to go, huh? System, activate the Endgame Master title, now!’
