Chapter 402: Anna’s Crazy Endgame!

At first glance, Anna’s advantage was obvious. She had a bishop on her side, far better than two pawns on the opponent’s side. In total, with her rook and three connected pawns, it should be easy to beat Suleymanli Aydin’s side with five pawns and one rook. However, things were not that simple here.

After recognizing that he had to make a sacrifice, Aydin didn’t hesitate. In order to save his position, he let his bishop die unjustly, with only getting two pawns in return. However, the man managed to neutralize the situation quickly by getting one of his pawns running amok in Anna’s territory.

Even though the promotion square was guarded tightly by the bishop, and her rook could just slide back to the first rank easily with one move, this was still a scary position. One moment of slip, and Anna would be in a dire situation. So, she didn’t dare to be careless here.

’I should get his pawn first before it could plant itself at the seventh rank, right?’ Anna bit her lips, thinking hard about the current situation. ’After all, if I waited for so long, his rook could support it quickly and ensure promotion.’ However, she was quite hesitant, unsure about her own thoughts. Even though things looked simple, Anna knew that this was the most crucial part of the game. She didn’t dare to make a careless move, afraid that it would be her who got killed.

’Um? Sheva is here?!’ The girl was taken aback when she saw Sheva with both arms crossed, watching the board intently, as if he was thinking hard as well for this game. Seeing this, the girl suddenly became more excited. ’Oh, I cannot embarrass myself here! Come on, Anna!’ She shouted inwardly, trying to hype herself up.

Sheva himself didn’t really react when Anna looked at him. The boy still had the stone-cold expression, not because that was his current feeling, but any expression he gave could be used as the reason to accuse him and Anna were cheating here. Even though it was a little bit far-fetched, he thought that it would be better to take a cautious approach rather than make a fool of himself.

’Still, this is not an easy endgame to convert.’ The boy frowned, putting his hand on his chin as he pondered carefully. ’Aydin will not be able to get his passed pawn promoted quickly enough, so he will definitely abandon that pawn. In compensation, that man is going to push all of his four pawns further, wanting to overwhelm Anna with his kamikaze plan. This is where things will be difficult for them both, as one misplaced inaccuracy will be enough to flip the entire table completely.’

It seemed that Aydin was at the same frequency as Sheva here. The man did exactly what he thought, letting the passed pawn on the A file die before putting his rook in the middle of the board, ready to support the four pawns that were about to march forward to death.

Even though he was at a disadvantage, though, it seemed that Aydin was a very decisive person. He didn’t hesitate even for a single second to exchange two of his pawns to give the other two a better room to move forward. It was a risky gamble, as the more he exchanged his pieces, the smaller the chance of his survival in this game.

With two pawns and a rook against one pawn, one bishop, and one rook, on paper, this should be an easy game for Anna to convert. However, just like a jinx, the more he didn’t want to see it, the more the worst-case scenario happened on the board. When Sheva saw Anna misplaced her rook, he widened his eyes in shock.

’NO!’ He screamed inwardly. ’She overthinks it! She doesn’t need to block his king! All she needs to do is get closer to that pawn and stalk it to the promotion square! Just as simple as that!’ Before he could analyze further, though, the arbiter suddenly approached him.

"We are sorry, Sir, but please, go back to your table. You are affecting the game." The man said calmly.

Sheva wanted to argue that his game was done, but he managed to hold back before words could escape his mouth. He knew why the arbiter asked him to do that. After all, even though he didn’t really communicate with Anna, his expression could be a dead giveaway, especially if she trusted him enough to follow it along. It was better to follow the procedure to avoid suspicion here.

Anna herself didn’t really notice this. No, all of her concentration was currently on the board, thinking of a way to overtake the situation. It was weird that, with how much advantage she had in this game, it was she who got pushed back to her own territory. The girl herself still hadn’t noticed yet that she just made a mistake that could cost her the entire game, as right now, all of her advantage was gone, and the game was back to equal with 0.00 evaluation from the computer engine.

However, it seemed that Chess God was a fair entity. Three moves after Anna made a mistake, it was Aydin’s turn to do the same. When all he needed to do was push the right pawn to get promoted, the man picked the wrong piece, allowing Anna’s bishop to cover the promotion square instantly. Not only that, but this also gave the girl a legitimate reason to counterattack, as the bishop also controlled the diagonal that could push the opponent’s king to the edge.

Anna’s eyes lit up immediately when she saw this. Unlike her previous mistake, this time, she noticed the mistake instantly, and a plan suddenly formed in her head.

’My bishop is enough to cover the promotion square. More than that, if I could give a check with my rook, then followed by another check from the bishop, the third check with the rook will be a skewer, and I get his rook and cover the promotion square as well! I get this!’

However, before she could even put her plan on the board, Suleymanli Aydin did the unthinkable here. Right after the mistake happened, the man groaned, as if realizing how bad the move he just made was, and right after that, he offered a handshake immediately.

’Um?! He resigns just like that?!’ Anna wondered, completely dumbfounded.
