Chapter 36: Crossroads of Ambition

While Livia arranged for Aren to attend Valcourt University as a celebrity guest, she sent a few scripts for Aren to look over.

There were still three days until the next episode of To Your Heart’s release, yet the discussions on social media were still on the rise with new viewers joining in every day.

The Insiders and To Your Heart both managed to appear on the trending topics every day on PulseX, igniting the curiosity of viewers who were unfamiliar with the shows.

Meanwhile, Livia had publicly announced herself as Aren’s manager, sharing her contact information if anyone wanted to sign him.

She was even surprised by the number of productions wanting to hire him.

Most of these productions were independent, creating a drama first before pitching it to one of the platforms.

This time, Aren had even been offered the lead role in some dramas; however, to his disappointment, most of them were similar roles to Shin, and to make matters worse, they were just simple fighting bullies with no depth in the character.

Since only three episodes of To Your Heart had released, the first impression of Shin might have made him look like just another bully, but he was not.

There was a reason why Aren didn’t feel any regret having his first role be Shin. This character wasn’t simple like the roles he was currently getting offered.

Moreover, he didn’t want to get typecasted, playing the same types of roles over and over. Sometimes, changing your typecast image was even more difficult than acting.

Many actors did the same kind of roles in the initial phases of their careers and then complained that they weren’t getting offered any different kind of roles.

With his experience, Aren could avoid making that mistake at least.

As he flipped through the scripts with a bored expression, his eyes suddenly sparked upon reading the next script.

Once he finished the script, he was convinced that this role would be his next; however, there appeared a single problem not too long after.

As he skimmed through some more scripts, there was another role that caught his attention.

Both roles couldn’t be any more different, and yet, he wanted to play both.

The first role was dark and brutal, a character who would go on a killing spree to take revenge.

The second one was a lively, righteous, and patriotic role of a revolutionary who rises against the corrupt government with his ragtag group of friends.

Both scripts were top-notch by independent self-productions.

If he could, he would like to play both roles, but they were getting shot at the same time, so he had no choice but to choose one of them.

He called Livia and informed her of his choices.

Now, he just had to wait for the response from these productions.

...

Three days later, Livia called him: "Both productions want you to come for an audition."

"When?" Aren inquired.

"Tomorrow. I will send you the timing and location."

"Alright."

...

At night, To Your Heart’s fourth episode aired...

In the first half, Nataly kept enduring various forms of bullying with gritted teeth, and then the scene where she saved Leah from bullying happened.

Since she didn’t have anything to lose from interfering, she did so without any hesitation for Leah.

And then the scene came where she discovered Shin and Leah’s relationship.

For the latter half, Leah and Nataly ate the meal on the dining table, with Shin shooting threatening and worried glances at Nataly, warning her to not tell Leah about him being the mastermind behind the bullying.

In the climax, Nataly left, with Shin escorting her outside.

Outside, Nataly threatened him: "If you don’t want Leah to find out about you, then help me."

Shin’s gaze turned cold at her threat, but then he saw the tears welling up in her eyes, her body shivering from the trauma she had suffered in just a few days.

He sighed and agreed: "Alright. I will take care of it tomorrow."

And the episode concluded.

...

The following morning, Aren went for the auditions.

First for the lively patriotic role. The drama’s name was New Dawn, and when Aren reached the location for the audition, he was stunned to see the rows of actors waiting for their turns.

Livia didn’t accompany him since she was busy finishing her resignation process at Titan Crest Entertainment.

Due to his mask and cap, no one recognized him as he went to the reception and told the receptionist his name.

As soon as she heard that, she looked at him with narrowed eyes, trying to confirm if he was the real Aren behind that mask.

After a short while, she smiled flatteringly. "Please come with me. The director told me to bring you right away when you showed up."

The other actors, not so well-known, glanced in his direction enviously.

Since this production was independent and not that well-known, no recognizable actors had come for the auditions. Most A-tier actors didn’t even go for auditions and rarely acted in random productions.

The only fame for New Dawn’s production came from the director and the writer, who were quite well-known in the industry.

Still, without any big production or actor’s name attached to them, New Dawn was obscured, without any renown.

Shortly after, Aren was taken into a secluded hall with the director, Venste Morel, and the writer, Seth Nava, sitting behind a table.

In front of them, an actor was in the middle of his audition, yelling his lines with an exaggerated, righteous expression.

After entering the hall, the receptionist waited for the actor to finish his audition before approaching the director and speaking into his ear.

Venste Morel, a man in his mid-forties with a rough square face that belonged more to a fighter than a director, looked in Aren’s direction before standing up with a smile.

He briefly glanced at the actor who had performed his audition and shooed him away with the words, "Wait outside. We will let you know the results."

After the actor left, the director laughed in a friendly tone: "Welcome, Aren. We were waiting for you. As for the actors outside, don’t worry, they are just here for supporting roles."

Aren could feel that, being an obscure production, the director put himself down to make Aren feel comfortable.

If it was a big, renowned production, Aren might even have to wait outside for his turn.

"No problem, Sir. Even if they were here for the lead role, I wouldn’t mind. I like the role, and I wouldn’t mind participating in an audition for it," Aren replied respectfully.

"Then shall we get on with the audition?" The director suggested, flipping the script to a specific scene. "Please perform this scene for us."
