Retired for A Hundred Years: Re-Employment for the Apocalypse Bigshot!-Chapter 126: Sister Ning, Where Are You Going?
The highway stretched straight ahead as Ji Ning drove a jeep with a base license plate. Bai Xiaotang sat silently in the passenger seat.
She glanced at the car in the rearview mirror, her fingers constantly fidgeting with the hem of her clothes.
After a while, she turned to Ji Ning, "Sister Ning, I want to ask you a question."
"Mm."
"Suppose you have a particularly close relative whom your whole family loves, and she treats you very well, but one day, you suddenly find out she might not be as good as you thought. What would you do?"
Before Ji Ning could answer, Lin Yuanyang in the back seat replied, "Of course, stay away from her, don’t be a fool and get deceived."
Bai Xiaotang frowned, glared back at Lin Yuanyang, and when she turned around, her expression had become much more forlorn.
Ji Ning glanced at Lin Yuanyang in the rearview mirror, replying calmly, "Everyone has their own motives for doing things; have you thought about why she’s like that to you?"
"No..."
Bai Xiaotang shook her head but quickly realized and sat up, denying, "It’s not me, it’s my friend."
"Alright, has your friend ever done anything to wrong her?"
"No...probably not! She’s like family at my friend’s house. My friend’s parents love her too. My friend and she grew up together, and people think she’s my friend’s real sister."
Ji Ning slightly raised an eyebrow, looking at the road ahead, and said indifferently, "Then there’s no grudge."
"Probably not..."
"Mm?"
"Does stealing candy and dresses as a child count?" Bai Xiaotang lowered her head slightly, her cheeks a bit flushed.
Lin Yuanyang frowned hearing this and parroted Ji Ning’s favorite phrase, "How ambitious!"
Ji Ning’s lips curved up, "It could count."
"Huh?"
"For some people, a piece of candy, a dress might be the untouchable line in their heart."
Ji Ning glanced at Bai Xiaotang, seeing her stunned expression and couldn’t help but chuckle, "After all, in a big world, there are all kinds of people. You can’t judge others by your standards. Let me give you some advice: Stay alert and protect yourself."
With that, Ji Ning turned the steering wheel and drove onto the nearby exit ramp.
Bai Xiaotang, belatedly realizing, finally reacted and glanced out of the window, asking, "Sister Ning, aren’t we going home?"
Lin Yuanyang tapped on the Smart Brain screen in his hand and replied for Ji Ning, "Sister Ning said we’re going to the service area."
Ji Ning looked at Bai Xiaotang beside her and said, "I have other things to handle; someone will drive you home."
Hmm???
Soon, Bai Xiaotang and Lin Yuanyang saw an acquaintance astride a heavy motorcycle.
"Instructor Ying..."
"Hey, how’s the playtime?" Huang Ying removed her helmet, revealing a face full of vigor.
Ji Ning unbuckled her seatbelt, got out of the car, and calmly took the helmet from Huang Ying’s hand, putting it on skillfully.
Meanwhile, Huang Ying moved to the front of the car and took the driver’s seat.
Bai Xiaotang was stunned for a dozen seconds, then quickly rolled down the car window, shouting at Ji Ning, who was already on the motorcycle, "Sister Ning, where are you going?"
"Jiuming Mountain."
"Vroom—vroom—boom—"
The vehicle shot out like an arrow off the string.
Ji Ning’s figure gradually turned into a dot, disappearing at the end of the road.
Huang Ying glanced at the two sullen faces leaning against the car window and chuckled, "Can’t I just send you back?"
"Sister Ning, why is she acting alone again? Aren’t we a team?"
"What team?"
"Ai Ning Team."
"???
On the other side.
Ji Ning sped on her motorcycle at 200 kilometers per hour.
It only took her an hour to get back near the Jiuming Mountain Base.
At that moment, Fu Yuanxuan’s call came as expected, "Where are you?"
"Nearby."
"I’m ready on my end as well."
Ji Ning hung up the phone, picked up the silver mask hanging in front of the motorcycle, and put it on her face.
***
The night was dark, the wind was high, and there was not a star in the sky.
The quiet base seemed deserted.
A swift silhouette flashed by, quickly heading towards a certain room.
The room was still brightly lit, and faint sounds of conversation emanated from within.
The figure approached the room quietly, flicked his fingers, and the two soldiers standing guard at the door crumpled to the ground.
The figure crept up to the door, pressing his ear against it to listen carefully to the voices inside.
"Are you sure those people were secretly photographing the Bai Family heiress?"
"Yes, traces of them were found on the scene."
"I suspect they have accomplices hiding nearby, looking to rescue the person who saved me."
"It’s been so long, yet we’ve never seen the person who saved you. You should meet them if there’s a chance."
"You’ve already met them."
"Met? Who is it?"
"It’s just... Who’s outside?"
The person inside suddenly noticed the light from the door slit was off, and instantly became alert. The figure outside the door quickly fled.
Fu Yuanxuan looked at the two fallen at the door with a grim face, immediately pressing the Smart Brain, "Assemble! Seal all base exits!"
Soon, the piercing alarm sounded throughout the Jiuming Mountain Base.
The previously silent barracks were instantly ablaze with light, and sharp whistles echoed one after another.
Soon, orderly lines of well-dressed soldiers stood in front of the barracks.
Fu Yuanxuan walked briskly to the front of the soldiers with a grim face, saying coldly, "Just now, someone eavesdropped on my conversation with the base commander and stole secrets. Now search for suspicious individuals as a team."
"Yes!"
A shadow lurking in a hidden corner pursed his lips, deciding to leave quickly.
He skirted around the incoming soldiers cautiously approaching the base’s perimeter wall.
The base wall was quite high, about four or five meters, and on the other side was a birch forest at the foot of Jiuming Mountain.
It was late autumn, the birch leaves nearly all fallen, the bare straight trunks adding a touch of desolation.
The figure took two steps back, ran a few paces, and leapt onto the wall lithely, preparing to leap over when suddenly a bright light shone directly on him.
Not far away, several male voices shouted, "Stop, don’t run!"
"Get here quickly, we’ve found him."
"Shoot, he’s getting away..."
"Bang bang bang—"
All three shots missed, and the dark figure had already jumped off the high wall.
"Don’t run! Stay right there!"
Several soldiers followed closely in pursuit.
Away from the base, Jiuming Mountain forest was pitch-black, almost impossible to see the road ahead.
But that figure moved as if with a spotlight vision, gliding through the forest like a fish in water, leaving the soldiers gasping for breath.
"You...stay right there."
"Bang—bang—"
Another two shots went astray.
"Damn—"
"Where’s the backup? If they don’t get here soon, he’s going to disappear into the mountain."
Just then, a swiftly moving figure zipped past them, "I’ll chase him, you guide the others."
"Eh? Who was that?"
"Did someone just pass by?"
"What nonsense, the talking wasn’t a ghost, was it?"
"Oh, man, don’t scare me!"
"Go away. That was from the First Base."
