Rejected by the Campus Belle, I Find My True Love-Chapter 237 - 235 Preparing to Return to School
In the evening, Xue Yuanqing and Zhong Hailan returned home from work. Xue Yang was so hungry his stomach was growling. He was sprawled on the couch, and when he saw them come back, he gave them a reproachful look.
"Young Master Xue is back," Zhong Hailan teased.
"Yes. May I ask, Mrs. Zhong, is there any chance we could change up the menu tonight?" He was truly fed up with chicken, duck, and goose.
"Then what kind of menu would Young Master Xue like to switch to?"
"Let’s have some greens, for a change of taste."
"How could mere greens befit the esteemed status of Young Master Xue?"
"This young master is also a carbon-based life form."
Xue Yuanqing plopped down next to Xue Yang. "Spill it. What was that all about yesterday?" His son was a young master, yet he, the father, was completely out of the loop. No one would believe it if he told them.
"As you can see, I accidentally latched onto a powerful backer, and a very useful one at that."
"What kind of backer? Are their thighs thicker than mine?"
Xue Yang glanced at his father’s skinny thighs, and Xue Yuanqing immediately glared back. "Have some respect."
"I didn’t say anything."
"But your eyes did."
"My eyes have a mind of their own. I can’t control them."
Xue Yuanqing gave him a light kick. "Stop messing around and be serious."
"I’ll tell you about it later. Now is not the time," Xue Yang said with an air of mystery.
"Are you playing mind games with your old man now, boy?"
"Dad, Mom, you believe me now that I really don’t need money for living expenses, right? Also, I’m heading back to school tomorrow. About the house, please remember to check it out when you have time. It seems to be finely renovated, so you can just buy some furniture and it’ll be ready to move into. You can handle that without consulting me."
Hearing this, Xue Yuanqing felt like kicking the brat again. "What do you mean ’without consulting me’? Are you the father or am I?"
"Well, I wish I were, but..."
Before he could finish, Xue Yang took another solid kick.
He grinned. He had to take these kicks while he could; there might not be another chance in the future.
"Hurry up and get back to school. Stop being a third wheel at home and getting in the way of your mother and me."
"Mrs. Zhong, aren’t you going to do something about your husband? He’s publicly driving away your sweet, adorable son right in front of you."
Zhong Hailan looked up at the ceiling. "I’m going to the vegetable garden to see if there’s any ’grass’ to cut for the ’pig’."
With that, she walked outside. Their vegetable patch wasn’t far, and streetlights lit the way, so the darkness wouldn’t be a problem for picking vegetables.
...
Alright, alright. He’d remember this public display of affection.
Xue Yang leisurely went upstairs, planning to do some light packing. When he’d left to come home, Xiao Naimao had helped him pack. Now, he had to do the miserable chore himself. Sigh...
"Indeed, since she’s not my wife, of course she doesn’t dote on me," he muttered to himself.
"What are you muttering to yourself about?" Zhong Hailan’s voice drifted up from the staircase.
"Heh heh. I knew Mom wouldn’t forget me."
Zhong Hailan walked up to him. "This is your living expense money for the semester. You just bought a house, so you must have spent all your money, right? If it’s not enough, call me, and I’ll have your dad transfer some to your account."
As she spoke, she stuffed a thick red envelope into Xue Yang’s hand. He squeezed it and estimated there was at least 10,000 yuan inside. Living expenses of 10,000 yuan for a semester was a lot for a family like theirs. Moreover, he had repeatedly told them he didn’t need any more money from them. They probably realized he might not use any money transferred to his card, so now they had resorted to giving him a semester’s worth of cash in one go.
Xue Yang looked suspiciously from the money in his hand to his mother.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Nothing. I don’t know why, but you suddenly seem so much more radiant and noble."
Xue Yang didn’t dwell on it. To be honest, his parents are just like most parents, always worrying that their child won’t eat, dress, or live well while away from home. Before he bought the house, they might have believed him about having money. But now that he’s bought a house, he’s probably a complete pauper in their eyes. Although, to be fair, he really is a pauper at the moment.
"Go on, stop fooling around." With that, Zhong Hailan began to help him pack.
"Is it very cold over there? You should take more warm clothes."
"No need. I have plenty of warm clothes there. I just didn’t bring them home since it’s not cold here. I can just take these same clothes back with me."
"That works, too. I’ve made a lot of cured meat, take that with you. And oranges, apples, cookies..." Zhong Hailan muttered, wishing she could pack up the entire house and send it with him.
This mother’s love is a bit too heavy.
"I’ll just take this suitcase. You can ship the rest to me," Xue Yang said, pointing to the suitcase he had brought with him.
"Shipping fees are so expensive."
"I’m flying, and checking in too much luggage is also expensive. That’s why I’m suggesting you ship it."
"Really?"
"That’s right." He certainly didn’t want to carry that much stuff.
"Alright then. Your dad is free on Sunday, so I’ll have him go to the shipping station then. Just send him your school address. That’s just one day after you leave."
"Okay."
"Xiao Yang, from the very beginning, your dad and I never actually thought you could get into Yanbei University. We were prepared to accept that you might lead a mediocre life. But your performance later on took us both by surprise. We know this is all a result of your own hard work and doesn’t have much to do with us. But... how should I put this? I’m not the best with words, but I hope you stay on the right path."
Xue Yang understood. Mrs. Zhong still didn’t quite believe he could earn so much money so quickly and thought he might have taken a crooked path. He couldn’t bring up Lin Xi now. If he did, it would sound like he was being kept by a wealthy woman. For a traditional person like Zhong Hailan, that would be absolutely unacceptable.
"Mom, you know about Linshi Group, right?"
"Of course. I might not have seen the world, but I’m not ignorant. If I didn’t even know about Linshi Enterprise, what kind of Dragon Country citizen would I be?"
That was one of Linshi Enterprise’s greatest successes—it was so well-known that even a woman from the countryside like Mrs. Zhong knew of it.
"My academic advisor, Teacher Gong, is a financial consultant for Lin Corporation. Lin Corporation collaborates with our school every year. I participated in one of the projects this time and won a cash prize. I used that money to start a small business and made a bit of a profit. Adding that to the money from my part-time modeling job, I was able to afford the house."
Xue Yang skillfully altered the facts as he explained to Madam Zhong. This way, he could increase his parents’ trust.
As expected, upon hearing about Lin Corporation and the school, Zhong Hailan’s worries completely vanished.
After they finished packing, Zhong Hailan went downstairs. "Your dad should have finished cooking by now. Come on down and eat."
Tonight, just as Xue Yang had wished, the usual New Year’s dishes were nowhere to be seen on the table. For celebrate, Xue Yang ate two large bowls. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
He swore to himself that it was definitely not because he was hungry.
