Chapter 48: A spy?

By the time I got to class, a teacher was already inside. I took a seat beside Ella and we greeted through eye contact.

I spent the entire morning in a daze. Every time I shifted in my chair, the slight ache in my body was a vivid reminder of the night before. I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks every time I thought about Nathan. I hit my head a little with my pen, trying to focus.

Ella was hovering the second our last morning exams ended. She didn’t even wait for us to get out of the hallway before she grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the quiet corner of the campus courtyard.

"Okay, spill it," Ella demanded, her eyes narrowed as she scanned my face. "You’re glowing. You’re literally radiating something, and it’s not just the leftover glitter from the club. You didn’t call me at all last night, or answer my texts this morning."

"I was tired, Ella," I tried to deflect, but I couldn’t stop the small, tell-tale smile from tugging at my lips.

"Tired? Fiona, you look like you just won the lottery and discovered the meaning of life at the same time." She gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Wait. Did you... and Nathan? Did you two do something? With his parents right down the stairs?"

I pulled her further into the shade of a large oak tree, looking around to make sure no other students were eavesdropping. "It wasn’t exactly ’like that.’ It was... in his room. And it wasn’t planned, it just happened after he brought me upstairs."

"I knew it!" Ella squealed, doing a little victory dance. "I knew It! Gurl you’re now a woman. How was.. I mean, he looks like he’d be... you know."

"He was incredible," I whispered, the memory of his hands on my waist making my breath hitch. "But the morning was a disaster. His parents are being impossible, they seem to side with anything that has to do with leo. It’s like I’mcompeting with a child, which is ridiculous."

Ella’s expression shifted from excited to worried. "Fiona, be careful. If Nathan starts starting wars with his parents over you, they aren’t just going to sit back and watch. Natasha is the type to play dirty, she would literally do anything as long as it’s against you. Never, ever trust an ex with a child."

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from Nathan.

Nathan: Counting down the minutes until I see you. Stay in the library until I message you—I don’t want you waiting out front where it’s crowded.

"He’s picking me up," I told her, showing her the screen.

He’s obsessed," Ella grinned, though her eyes remained serious. Be careful. Being with Nathan is great right now, but his family is very dangerous and they will try to cause trouble for you once you are back inside that house. I think now that all this is happening, they may want you out of the way."

"I literally think about that all the time. The only person being a bit reasonable with me is his mom and of course Caleb."

Ella held my hand giving it a little squeeze "Why does Natasha have to complicate your life right now! My friend was glowing just fine."

I smiled at her, thinking of it now, I felt blessed to have a friend. She was my only family now, someone who always got my back"

"We better start heading to the library Ella" I reminded and she sighed. "Yea, Studying is a bit exhausting now that I think of it"

As we started walking toward the library, my phone buzzed again. I thought it was another sweet message from Nathan, but when I looked at the screen...It was a text from an unknown number. It was a photo—blurry, but clear enough.

My stomach dropped. I looked down at the screen again, my fingers trembling. It wasn’t just a picture of me last night. It was a photo from inside the club.

The lighting was dark and flashing, but you could clearly see me and Julian. We were close, his hands were on my waist, and we were smiling while we danced. To anyone looking at it—especially a man as protective and jealous as Nathan—it looked like a lot more than just two friends having a good time.

"Fiona, what is it?" Ella asked, leaning over. When she saw the screen, she let out a sharp breath. "Oh no. Someone was inside the club. They were watching us the whole time."

"If Nathan sees this..." I couldn’t even finish the sentence. After everything he said this morning about trusting me and wanting me to run to him, this would look like a massive betrayal

The person who took it must have been hiding in the bushes or parked in a dark car nearby. Underneath the photo was a simple message:

"Does Nathan know you have other drivers? Or should I tell him myself?"

"Someone followed you last night," she whispered, looking around the campus as if the person was watching us right now. "Fiona, if Nathan sees this, he’s going to think you lied about where you were."

"I didn’t lie," I said, my voice shaking. "I just didn’t tell him everything. I don’t want him to think I was with another guy like that."

"Heading to the library, dear?" Another message entered. "Make sure you study hard. You never know when your luck might run out.

I turned the screen and she gasped. "Fiona, we’re being watched, you have to tell Nathan!"

I sighed, ’Does my life really have to get complicated all the time?’

"I would have said it’s Natasha, but... what if its Catherine"

I turned to look at her face. "Catherine?" I repeated and she nodded. "It can’t be, Ella, how would she even know I was going out with you?"

"If it’s Natasha, how would she know we were heading to the library?" I stared at Ella understanding her point. But it could not be Catherine. Father was too strict to let her go out at night, how would she even gain access to the club? The cue was very long last night.

Ella tugged my arm "what are you thinking?"

"It can’t be Catherine, maybe Natasha sent someone to spy on me".

Ella folded her arms under her chest. "There’s also that. But we can’t rule out anybody from now"
