Rejected: A love story-Chapter 138: Leo isn’t my son!
Nathan stared blankly at the ceiling. "I’ve failed her. I’m a fucking useless person."
"Nathan, you haven’t failed her," Caleb said firmly. "You wouldn’t have known. None of us would have known."
Before Nathan could answer, a knock at the door interrupted the silence. Caleb looked over to see a nurse standing at the door.
"Mr. Keith," the nurse said gently. "There’s a woman out here with a child. She says her name is Natasha, and she says she’s here with your son." 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
Nathan’s face immediately darkened. "No," he said flatly. "Tell her to go away."
The nurse looked taken aback. "Are you sure? She said—"
"I said no," Nathan interrupted. "I don’t want her in here."
The nurse paused, her eyes flicking to Caleb as if seeking some sort of confirmation. However, when that didn’t come, she nodded hastily and left, closing the door behind her. Caleb looked at Nathan, a confused expression on his face.
"Nate, come on, it’s Leo. He’s just a kid. He doesn’t know what’s going on. At least let him in for a minute."
Nathan, however, just shook his head, his expression unyielding. "No, Caleb. I don’t want them around here."
Caleb stood up and walked over to the door, stepping into the hallway. Natasha was standing there, her hand clutched around Leo’s, and the boy looked confused, a toy car clutched tightly in his other hand.
"Natasha," Caleb said, his voice neutral, but wary. "What are you doing here?"
"I heard what happened," Natasha said, her voice soft.
"I brought Leo to see his father. He wants to see him."
Caleb looked back at the door, then at Natasha. "Now isn’t a good time. Nathan isn’t in a good place to see this."
"Caleb, please," Natasha begged. "Leo wants to see his father. It might help Nathan too. He needs him, and Nathan needs him too."
Caleb sighed and went back into the room, closing the door behind him. "Nate," Caleb said, his voice careful. "Natasha is out here with Leo. She wants to bring him in to see you."
Nathan shook his head, his expression serious. "No. I don’t want to see them, Caleb. Don’t let me keep repeating myself."
"Nate, come on," Caleb said, his voice taking on a softer quality. "Leo is your son, Nathan. He’s just a kid. He doesn’t understand what’s going on. At least let him in for a minute."
"I said no," Nathan replied, his voice sharp.
Caleb looked at Nathan, confused by the intensity of his response. "Why not? He’s your son, Nathan. He wants to see you."
Nathan didn’t say anything for a moment, and then he replied, his voice almost inaudible, "He’s not my son."
Caleb looked at Nathan, unsure of what he had just heard. "What? What are you talking about?"
Nathan lifted his head, his eyes filled with a mix of anger and pain. "Leo isn’t my son, Caleb."
Caleb stared at him, completely dumbfounded. "What do you mean he’s not your son? That doesn’t make any sense. You’ve been raising him—"
"That’s because I thought he was mine!" Nathan cut in, his voice rising in anger. "I believed her, Caleb! I believed Natasha when she came to me and said he was mine! But then Leo fainted, and I took him to the hospital! They need a blood donor, and I gave my blood! But my blood doesn’t match! It can’t match! Because he is not my child!"
Caleb’s mouth fell open, and he closed it, his eyes wide with shock, unable to say a word! Finally, he managed to stutter, "Are you sure? Maybe there was a mistake—"
"There was no mistake," Nathan spat out in anger. "The doctors told me! Natasha was using Leo to get to me, Caleb! And I fell for it! Like a fool!"
Caleb was confused. "But you’ve taken care of them. You provided her with a house, you’ve been paying Leo’s school fees, you’ve been paying child support—"
"All for a child who is not mine," Nathan said, his voice filled with hatred. "She has played me, Caleb. She has used me. And she is the one who had caused Fiona and me to grow apart in the first place. And all because of what?—A lie!."
Caleb just stood there for a moment, trying to make sense of what he was being told. And then he turned around and walked out of the room. He found Natasha still standing in the hallway, holding Leo’s hand.
"Caleb, is everything okay?"
Caleb’s blood boiled as he stared at her. "You’re a wicked woman, Natasha," he said, his voice low but filled with venom. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done to him? To all of us?"
Natasha blinked, taken aback. "Caleb, I don’t know what you’re talking about—"
"Don’t you dare play dumb with me," Caleb snapped, his voice rising. "Nathan knows the truth, Natasha. He knows Leo isn’t his son."
Natasha’s face went pale, and she opened her mouth to respond, but Caleb didn’t let her. "You lied to him. You used him. You came between his relationship with Fiona, and for what? For money? For a house? You’re nothing but a manipulative, selfish liar."
"Caleb, please," Natasha said, her voice shaking. "It’s not like that. I didn’t mean for it to—"
"Save it," Caleb snarled. "You’ve done enough damage. You’ve ruined his life, and I swear to God, you’ll never get another penny from him. Hear me?"
Natasha’s eyes welled with tears, but Caleb didn’t give a damn. He turned and walked away, leaving her standing there in the hallway, stunned and silent. He didn’t stop walking until he was back in Nathan’s room, his chest heaving with rage.
Nathan looked up at him, his eyes tired. "Did you say anything to her?"
"Yeah," Caleb said, his tone still strained. "I said exactly what I think of her. She’s not getting anything else from you, Nate. Not a damn thing."
Nathan nodded, his shoulders slumping. "Good. I’m done with her. With all of it."
