Chapter 34: Confession (1)

Shadows receded the next morning. And Ciel woke up to face the scowling dragon again.

"Here."

The dragon’s cold voice broke through her sleepy haze.

Ciel’s legs folded on the bed, her hands receiving the sandwich for breakfast.

The two soft breads pressed against lush green cabbage and vibrant tomatoes, paired with a simple cooked salmon to finish the meal’s look.

She bit into it with a crunch. Then, her small body bounced with joy, the mattress dipping under her weight.

The dragon plopped into her desk chair that now faced the bed. As she sat, the simple t-shirt accentuated her curves, while the shorts stiffened against the muscles of her legs.

She stated, her cold voice belying an amusement to the excited Ciel. "It’s a simple sandwich."

Ciel froze. Ignoring Summer, she eyed the sparse space compared to her small figure, feeling hollow.

Her palm patted the mattress. "You haven’t slept a wink since yesterday, Miss Dragon."

Summer’s brows fell.

Then, she tapped at her glaring eyes with smooth, healthy skin, with no eye bags dragging across her face.

"Dragon," she explained, as she lifted and bit into her own sandwich. "Was not bound by the limitation of the body. The mimic exam was all too hectic, and I can skip a few sleeps or two."

Yet meals were clearly an exception. Ciel joked inside.

She then peeked. Behind Summer’s broad shoulder lay at least two towers of documents on the desk: the left one stamped and finished, while the taller one on the right waited, untouched.

"Shame..." Ciel murmured through her bites. Her thighs shifted against the thin fabric of her new pajama, carefully avoiding any exposed skin.

A scowl lingered over Summer’s lips. Was this girl seriously regretting that they couldn’t sleep together?

She hung her head high, her features straining to look as ’disgusted’ as possible. "Know your place. You haven’t earned the rights yet."

Ciel blinked, dazed. Has Miss Dragon misunderstood something?

As a former beast that didn’t have a ’need’ known as sleep, Ciel merely regretted that Miss Dragon was the same.

The pleasure of lazily sleeping came with exhaustion first, which seemed to be robbed from Miss Dragon and the past Ciel.

Summer, unaware of her sympathy, only added with a berating tone.

"The Queen of Hunt’s last shot was the weakest I’ve seen yet. Gravity and other limitations aside, it deviated from its target at the last minute, which caused the arrow to be so easy to intercept."

Ciel nodded. "In other words...?"

"You wouldn’t have survived." The dragon told of her hypothetical death without any restraint. "Anyone other than me couldn’t have blocked it. In the worst cases, even perceived it."

Ciel nodded again. "But you were there for me, no?"

Miss Dragon seethed her teeth. "Don’t expect for me the next time."

This time, Ciel shook her head.

Summer’s worry, disguised as an intolerant lecture, burst out from her lips as Ciel was occupied with something else.

[ Reward received. (SP+8; LVL: 4 - > 12 ]

[ Please allocate your stats. ]

She closed her eyes, muttering inside for a few questions.

Unfortunately, no strings of messages arrived in response to her request. Ciel couldn’t even ask a question about what the basic stats do.

Though she already made up her mind.

[ SP: 8 -> 0 ]

[ VIT: 5-> 10 (5) ]

[ HP will increase accordingly: 70/70 -> 120/120 ]

[ INT: 11 -> 17 (+6 due to <Witch’s Bind> trait) ]

Unlike INT, VIT seemed to bring a bonus.

Ciel took a deep, slow breath through her nostrils. Her grogginess began to ease as the muscles loosened, releasing the weight of morning fatigue.

Stamina was her biggest weakness in the last exam. And she guessed rightfully that VIT was the solution.

INT seemed to matter only for learning and perceiving spells.

Otherwise, until a higher-tier spell was needed, Ciel would test other stats in the future.

Unknown to Summer, however, Ciel’s act of taking a deep breath only blew away what little patience the lecturer had.

Ciel, watching behind the panel, winced as Summer’s figure shot forth, then flicked an index finger on her forehead.

It hurted. Ciel’s twitching black eyes met Summer’s annoyed ones, close up with their breaths mingling.

She liked the distance between them now. So, Ciel just forgot the pain earlier, not that she disliked it in the first place.

"..."

A suffocating pause afterwards, Summer groaned. "Is anything happening?"

Ciel neither nodded nor shook her head this time.

Instead, her palm patted the mattress again.

Summer, with a moment of silence, only sighed.

Yet she sat herself right beside Ciel, their thighs pressing closely against each other.

The smell of both sandwiches lingered, mixed in with an exotic, sweet scent of shampoo from the dragon’s skin.

A flutter tingled inside Ciel.

What to do? She wanted to hug Miss Dragon again, but her hands were already occupied.

And so, Ciel distracted herself from the regret, starting with another reward.

[ <Telekinesis> acquired. ]

A wave of knowledge crashed into her mind, granting her the method to cast <Telekinesis>.

Apparently, like <Mana Contract> as a skill, <Telekinesis> wasn’t considered a spell despite consuming some mana, which meant...

She pondered. Out of curiosity, she lifted her hand to the desk, mana flickering at her palm.

Air coiled like a spring. At her command, she directed it to the desk at a distance.

A disaster happened in response.

Imprecise for her first use, the coiling air latched onto the right, taller paper towers.

It tilted with a dangerous eagerness, then fell splattered to the floor, her ears ringing with the impact.

She froze.

She turned away.

But the bloodlust beside her was boiling with a tinge of madness.

The voice that followed, however, sounded so kind and light that it wound back into being uncanny.

"Ignoring me in plain sight, then proceeded to use my desk as an experimental ground."

Ciel shuddered as Summer leaned into her neck, the golden hair tickling her skin.

"Say," Summer whispered. "I don’t seem to recall you using Telekinesis yesterday. I couldn’t have been mistaken just now, right?"

Not a hint of fear flashed from Ciel’s face.

Though a heat settled beneath her stomach, threatening to burst out. Why did Summer make her nervous like this?

And why did she surprisingly enjoy it?

Casting off the thought, Ciel turned to face Summer, shifting a little away from her.

She had nothing to hide.

"Can you listen to me for a second, Miss Dragon?"

She clenched her chest with a sincere, pleading look.

It was time to confess to the mysterious System.

Ciel had no reason to hide it, after all. Summer was a trustworthy person to entrust this truth to, helping her to grow stronger with it.

Not like the Witches, though. She would be found the next day on a dissecting table if they discovered her System.

Unaware of her, the pile of documents that collapsed just now hid a tiny orb of light.

And it blinked at Ciel and Summer, just like an eye would.
