Reincarnated as the favorite of an obsessive goddess: gave me a system-Chapter 21: Brothers.
[ SYSTEM MESSAGE ]
ENEMY DETECTED
Type: Human.
Approximate Threat Level: Rank E.
Distance: 10 meters.
When the fight broke out Kai’s daggers slid into his hands as if they had always belonged there, the muscle memory of a life he was still remembering. For his part Thorne planted his feet wide apart with his axe held low and ready for the inevitable situation. His wolf ears twitched once as they caught every tiny sound including the creak of leather, the rasp of breath, and the faint clink of coins in a bandit’s pocket.
The first of them charged directly at Kai with a clumsy overhead strike intended to split him in half. Kai moved inside the arc almost smoothly. His left dagger caught the blade high up and slid along the edge with a metallic screech while his right dagger slipped under the man’s guard and slit his throat in a single clean motion. Blood splattered the canvas of the wagon and the bandit fell without making a sound.
Two more came at once with one on each side. Kai spun between them using the narrow tunnel to his advantage. One of them raised his hands to recite a spell.
"Fireball!"
The cave illuminated slightly. Kai smiled because the spell was too weak and did not even emit heat in such an enclosed area.
"Absorption!"
When the fireball disappeared the bandits remained confused since they had never seen anything like it. Kai took advantage of their confusion and spun around.
"Expulsion," he recited calmly as the fireball shot back instantly.
It went straight to the face of the man on the right. The flames ignited the bandit’s beard and he screamed while clawing at his skin. Thorne’s axe ended the scream with a wet crunch as it split him from shoulder to hip.
"Fewer of them left now," Kai whispered already moving again.
The leader screamed a desperate order.
"Surround them! Do not let the big guy move that axe!"
Three bandits lunged at Thorne at the same time. He roared with a deep sound that echoed throughout the cave. His first strike took off a sword and the arm holding it. The second bandit tried to stab low but Thorne simply stepped on the blade to break it and drove his knee into the man’s jaw with enough force to lift him off the ground. The third circled behind but Thorne’s tail lashed out like a club to break ribs and send the man flying straight toward Kai’s daggers. Kai finished him off with two quick stabs to the heart and lung.
The leader had turned pale.
"What the hell are you?"
"Simple adventurers," Kai said in a low voice.
The man with the scar lunged forward with his sword flashing in a desperate series of cuts. Kai parried the first, dodged the second, and used the bandit’s own momentum on the third. He hooked one dagger behind the sword’s hilt to pull it away and drove the other directly under the ribs. The leader’s eyes widened. Kai twisted the blade once as he felt life leave the man and then pulled it out.
The last bandit dropped his bow and tried to flee deeper into the cave. Thorne’s axe flew like a lightning bolt and buried itself in the man’s back. The bandit fell and remained motionless.

You have earned two points to distribute among your stats and remember that you have two more that you have not used yet.
Kai simply closed the system window. Silence took over the cave broken only by the crackling of the fire and the slow dripping of blood. Thorne approached to pull out his axe and wiped the blade on a dead man’s cloak. He looked at Kai with his chest heaving and nodded slowly.
"You fight as if you have done this a thousand times, Boss."
Kai cleaned his daggers on the same cloak.
"Thank you."
Thorne gave him a massive pat on the shoulder. The gesture was warm and fraternal.
"That is what brothers do," Thorne grunted.
Kai looked him directly in the eyes and felt something settle in his chest. It was not just respect but something deeper. It was the type of bond forged in blood and shared purpose. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
They checked the wagon. The mana crystals were still there and packed carefully in padded boxes while glowing softly in blue. They were undamaged and perfect.
"The client is going to be happy," Thorne said as he secured the tarp again. "And we are going to be richer than we planned. Let’s get this out of here before more friends show up."
They hitched the two draft horses that had been stolen along with the wagon and by the time the moon was high they were rolling back along the north road toward Athelgard. The return trip gave them time to talk. Thorne drove while Kai sat beside him with his legs dangling over the side of the wagon. The night air was fresh after the suffocating cave and brought the scent of pine and distant rain.
"You know," Thorne said after a long silence. "In my old pack we had a saying. Blood shared in battle makes brothers more than those who share birth blood. I never fully understood it until tonight."
Kai looked at him sideways.
"Do you miss them? Your pack?"
"Every damn day." Thorne’s ears flattened for a moment and then rose again. "But the village we are building is starting to feel like a new pack. And you, Boss, you are the alpha who actually listens. That is rare."
Kai smiled slightly.
"I am just trying to make sure everyone is okay."
Thorne nodded slowly.
"That is why I will follow you anywhere. Not because of some title but because I trust the man who holds it."
They rode in a comfortable silence after that which was the kind of silence that only arises between men who have just entrusted their lives to one another. Dawn was breaking when they rolled through the north gate of Athelgard. The city was waking up with bakers taking fresh loaves out of ovens and children chasing stray cats while merchants set up their wares. They went straight to the Adventurers Guild.
Dilya’s eyes widened at the sight of the wagon and the two of them covered in dried blood and cave dust.
"By the Goddess... did you do it in a single night?"
Kai placed the proof on the counter which consisted of seven bandit plates they had cut from their belts plus the wagon itself parked right outside.
"The cargo is intact," he said. "The bandits won’t bother anyone else."
Dilya counted quickly and then slid a heavy pouch across the counter. There were two gold coins plus the fifty silver coins promised. The weight felt good in Kai’s palm.
"The guild will take care of returning the carriage to the nobleman, thank you very much guys."
Thorne smiled and showed his fangs.
"It is nothing, just our job."
They left the guild richer and lighter in spirit as they walked toward the livestock market with almost three gold coins in their pockets. The horse dealer was an old centaur with a braided beard. He showed them six sturdy mounts including four males and two mares plus another young gray mare with strong legs and calm eyes which was exactly the one Thorne had described around the fire.
"These will pull plows and haul wood and still have the heart for breeding," the centaur promised. "The gray one has spirit but she obeys."
Kai ran his hand over the mare’s neck. She neighed softly and nudged his shoulder as if she had already claimed him.
Thorne laughed.
"She likes you, Boss. Smart girl."
They haggled for twenty minutes in a friendly but firm way and left with the seven horses for two gold coins and thirty silver. The remaining coins were used for the return trip including extra rope and oats and a new whetstone plus a small carved flute that Thorne insisted on buying for Elara because he wanted his mother to teach her to play.
Kai thought about buying a gift for Lyla but he did not quite remember what he could buy so he decided to buy wood and make something himself during the trip that would remind him of her.
Leading the line of horses they headed toward the south gate. The city seemed smaller now and less overwhelming. Kai walked on the left and Thorne on the right while the horses trotted peacefully between them.
"You know what this means, right?" Thorne said quietly as the gate appeared in the distance. "We aren’t just survivors anymore. I consider you my brother."
Kai looked at him and noticed the scars on his arms and the serene strength in his step.
"Yes," he replied. "Brothers. And the village is going to be the first real home many of us have had in a long time."
Thorne bumped his shoulder against Kai’s in a way that was soft this time and almost playful.
"Then let’s go home and give them the good news. And maybe next time we come here we can spend a day. Family time."
Kai smiled with the kind of smile that reached his eyes.
"I would like that."
The south gate of Athelgard opened before them. Beyond it the road stretched green and open toward the forest and toward home. Kai clicked his tongue and the horses moved forward.
