Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 110: Unresolved catastrophe
Boom!
The explosion erupted from behind them, fast enough that Meren and her forces couldn’t defend against it.
At first, they noticed the enemy aiming a weird-looking cannon at them; still, it was a cannon, and any barrier could defend against it.
Oh, how wrong they were.
Just from the massive blast that left the mouth of the machine, Meren instinctively knew it was something she could not defend against.
But what could she do when the attack was moving so fast that it erupted the sky and caused the earth to shiver?
No one knew, not until the massive blast touched down right in the middle of their forces and caused everything to explode upon impact.
A deep hole appeared where the soldiers once were, along with their bodies completely burned off and damaged beyond return.
Those who survived were thrown halfway across the battlefield, some injured and others lucky to even be alive.
Meren and Ava were among those who were lucky, as they were both protected by Ley, who used his barrier to shield as many people as he could.
Alas, the barrier wasn’t strong enough to stop the attack that had just hit them; as such, some of the soldiers died from the barrier being broken.
On the ground and confused, Meren watched as her knight fell to one knee, spewing out blood.
"Ley!" she instinctively called out, trying to reach out to him just to make sure he was okay.
It was then she noticed it.
Her face twisted into shock and fear while her lips curled up as if trying to hold back her screams.
Her hand had been blown off.
So much so that her bone was sticking out, with her flesh and blood dripping right out of it.
"Arrhhh—"
It was a silent scream, yet it felt like everyone on the battlefield could hear it.
She hugged her damaged hand close, the pain spreading through her entire body.
No one would see their arm getting blown off and not lose their cool in the moment.
In that moment, Meren could have sworn she felt her entire body had been blown to smithereens as she heard another massive explosion nearby.
This time, it took out even more soldiers from the far right, their painful cries echoing, despite being overshadowed by the sound of the blast.
"W...e need to retreat, sire..." Ley managed to speak, slightly turning his head to look at her, "It would seem Dergen has gotten his hands on some powerful stuff. We can’t... fight it like this."
Ley was right.
So far, Dergen had only launched two missiles, and almost half of Meren’s soldiers had died from it, in less than a few seconds.
There was no way they would be able to survive any more hits, not when the soldiers were scared and confused.
Meren couldn’t help but bite her lower lip.
Even while she was in pain, her thoughts still wandered to Alaric.
Why on earth would he help Dergen?
And even more so, how is Alaric so powerful? Building such weapons is not even something she had ever dreamt about.
It was then she remembered what Velmo told her before the war even began.
"You should watch out for that man named Alaric. I advise we keep him on our side; it wouldn’t be fair to us if he becomes an enemy."
During that time, she didn’t think anything of it and only thought Velmo was speaking in regard to the amazing stuff Alaric had accomplished in the kingdom.
It was all starting to make sense.
The angel that should never make an enemy of humanity.
"Dammit, Alaric... why..."
The pain she felt in her hand began to spread toward her heart.
If she had the chance, she would scream to the sky, cursing out Alaric.
But such a thing shouldn’t occur to her, not on the battlefield when her soldiers needed her the most.
Raising her head, she uttered, her voice still strained from the pain...
"Retreat... tell the soldiers to retreat..."
That was all Ley needed to hear.
He immediately looked toward the nearest soldier, "Hey! Let the others know; spread the news, fall back and retreat."
Slightly nodding her head, the female knight began to alert everyone else about the change in plans.
Not that anyone would feel sad about it; no one wanted to die anyway.
Ley used the opportunity to pick Meren up from the ground and carried her on his shoulder while running.
All they could pray for was that another attack isn’t launched at them, not until they have found a place to regroup and heal one another.
Ava, on the other hand, was halfway through the battlefield, completely ignoring every explosion that was happening behind her.
As she ran, she could see the soldiers charging forward, probably trying to push on Meren’s forces now that most of their soldiers were down.
Their battle cries were loud, their stomping feet even louder.
She didn’t care.
Whatever it took, she was going to get over to the enemy side and take Alaric back with her.
"Get out of my way!!!"
In a single slash, she cut down almost every soldier that was blocking her path, like a force that couldn’t be put down.
Even though she was outnumbered, Ava was still leading the charge, clearing enemies like she was simply kicking buckets back at the castle.
It didn’t take long for Dergen and his generals to understand she was a threat that was heading toward them.
"She’s strong. Isn’t that the diamond-ranked knight of the Montclair Barony?" one of the diamond-ranked spoke, watching as Ava was single-handedly fighting the soldiers.
"It would seem like it," Dergen scoffed, "I’m not surprised she’s from there; that man always seems to know how to make things that would shock the world one way or the other. Granted, this time, there’s a way for me to use that very thing against his own creation."
Waving his hand, he called on the next squad, the demons he was keeping just in case something went wrong.
Answering his calls, the demons charged forward, each one of them holding a gun, grenade launcher, or so much more.
What was more dangerous than flying demons holding fast-firing rifles?
Grrrrr!
They fired at the soldiers trying to escape, shooting them dead to the ground.
Some were out of range, which led to the demons speeding toward them to finish the job.
Ava managed to hold out for a while, at least right up to the point where a bullet grazed her foot.
It was from there on she lost her footing.
From there, she found an arrow halfway through her chest from behind.
Falling to her knees, she realized that while she was busy focusing on dodging the bullets, most of the soldiers had surrounded her.
"Dammit! Don’t get in my way!!!" she yelled frustratedly.
Gripping the hilt of her blade, she was ready to strike one of them down, anyone she came in contact with; she didn’t care which one.
Baam!
A bullet went through her guts, blood instantly pouring from her mouth as she fell to the ground, flat on her stomach.
Blood.
It didn’t take long for her to start soaking in her own pool of blood.
"I can’t... die... yet..."
Oh, how she tried to move her limbs; she desperately tried, the strain on her face was proof of that.
She didn’t want to die, at least not yet.
If Alaric was beyond the enemy line, if he was there, then she didn’t mind meeting her end.
All Ava wanted was to speak to him, understand where he was coming from.
Once again, the sound of boots echoed; the soldiers were moving away from her and advancing forward.
Drrrrr!
Rain began to pour, each puddle landing directly on her dying skin.
"Alaric..." she called out, feeling her body slowly giving up on her.
It was then she heard a voice...
"Ahh, man, the boss is going to be pissed when he finds out. Damn, I leave you for a few minutes, and you’re somehow dying in the middle of the battlefield."
The voice was a deep, manly voice. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Ava was too weak to even consider raising her head to know who it was.
"Thank the gods I came here on time. Oh, and the fact the soldiers have moved away from here. This might be the fastest war I have ever seen; that’s Lord Alaric for ya. Anyway, let’s heal you up. The boss needs you for something if he’s telling me to make sure you don’t die, you lucky champ."
"He..."
Ava fell unconscious, as if just the fact she knew Alaric was somehow looking after her was all she wanted before giving up.
...
Her eyes fluttered open.
Almost instantly, she jerked up from the ground, her eyes widened in shock.
Before she could even say anything, she heard a familiar voice.
"Good, you’re awake."
Slowly turning toward the voice, she saw her.
"Hina!"
