Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 106: Loyalty and rage
"... You want to..."
"Yes."
"Destroy the..."
"Yes."
"World..."
Alaric looked at her, eyes filled with nothing but emptiness and coldness.
"With your help, I’ll be several steps closer to my goal," he uttered. "As of now, I have multiple demons fighting for my cause. You are also a demon."
Before Alaric could complete his words, Fiona chimed in with a sad smile on her face.
"Is that... is that why you brought me here? To help you look for the rest of the demon lords’ hearts?"
"Yes."
Her face winced with pain.
"I see... I’m... just another demon to Lord Alaric..." She looked to the ground, stylishly kicking the air. "Hnm! True, That’s right, I got carried away because I stayed in the barony for so long, forgetting I’m actually a goblin."
Alaric stayed quiet for a while.
Just how many words can be let out without breaking free of his thoughts?
He gripped his fist.
"Perhaps I spoke harshly. If you are going to help me, I need to be transparent." He stood to his feet. "I’ll tell you everything I know."
As those words left his lips, he steeled himself for what was to come.
He began to explain everything to her: how the Devourer God would swallow the entire world of Yin energy, simultaneously killing everyone in it, including him.
He also told her how the only way to stop said god was to spread enough Yang energy to completely overwhelm its counterpart.
That way, the god would die of starvation.
Alaric didn’t forget to add the endgame: how he would spare only the people from the barony and those strong enough to survive the onslaught.
After the god is dead, they would be the ones to reproduce and build humanity from the ground up.
And while he was open to Fiona, she still didn’t seem to accept his plan.
"No way, what about the rest that died? What will happen to them?!" she yelled.
"Sacrifices are needed to secure certain futures. An unavoidable outcome, but it’s one that is necessary," Alaric replied.
With his back pressing against the wall, he watched as Fiona was whispering to herself.
"Once you’ve helped me acquire the rest of the remains, you’ll return back to the barony and speak nothing about what I have told you. If they knew, Ava would catch up to my plan and threaten to ruin it. So keep it a secret until..."
"No! I refuse!" Fiona exclaimed, her eyes bubbling as if about to cry.
Rather than saying anything, Alaric glared.
"Lord Alaric, I know you’re not that kind of person. I know this because you were the one that saved me and my people. You won’t be able to kill innocent women and children. I’m sure if we tell the Baron and Baroness, they will be—"
"Did you listen to a single word I said?"
"I did. And I’m sorry, but for the first time, I don’t agree with you. Killing innocent people to save a few is not right. I don’t support it, my lord. If you..." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Cut the bullshit and find these damn shards already!!!"
Alaric yelled, slamming his fist against the wall as his face was hitched with anger.
The wall was left with large lines, mimicking that of a spider web.
Fiona was most definitely frightened, her entire body shaking as she wasn’t used to Alaric yelling at her.
"Quit making things harder than they already are! Killing innocents? Don’t make me laugh, Fiona! You’re naive; you see the world for rainbows and sunflowers, even when you were being abused by the goblin king! Who the hell do you think that affects, huh?"
"Lord... Alaric?"
"Do you think I feel comfortable doing this shit?! You think I just randomly went to commit mass genocide? Hey, wake up and slay half of humanity; it’s all good, man. You can just handle the rest, and I’ll do the killing."
Alaric continued, his words slowly getting shrouded by the pain he carried.
"Spare me the condescending bullshit; I don’t need your damn sympathy or opinion on the matter! I chose this knowing damn well what I wanted!"
Fiona stayed quiet, steadily on the verge of crying.
"Lord Alaric isn’t like that," she said, this time as if forcing a smile.
Alaric frowned, clenching his fist.
He stormed towards her, grabbing her by the arm.
"What the hell do you know about me, huh?! Do you have any idea who I am? Do you know who I truly am? Here, why don’t I help you!"
He moved closer.
"My name is Henry Bartholomew, soldier 578, military personnel for the Eios cadet. I fight even though I don’t want to; I yell out orders knowing damn well I can’t do any better; I mimicked every possible personality until I found the one suited for survival. So tell me, how much do you truly know about me? Are you speechless? Does this surprise you? If it does, then shut the hell up and help me save this fucking world!"
Bang bang!
There was a knock on the door.
Alaric halted, the anger on his face slowly fading away.
He released his hold on her arm, turned around, and walked towards the door.
Click!
He opened it.
And there was Aigon, with a paper in his hand.
"I have a message from Taizen."
"Thank you."
Alaric grabbed the paper and closed the door.
Taizen was none other than the cave snake he had turned into a diamond rank a while back and gifted a human body.
Right after, Taizen went back to his clan to rule over them as the leader. Alaric came to take both him and his people and made them serve under him instead.
Taizen was upset about it but quickly let it go as he realized he was still the leader regardless.
In any case, Alaric had him and his people keep watch over the Montclair Barony in secret while he was away. Seeing as a letter was sent, it meant something was happening back home.
Alaric sighed.
"I’ll read it later."
Just as he turned around, he spotted Fiona kneeling on the ground while holding the demon lord’s heart.
It was then Fiona spoke,
"I’ll help you to the best of my abilities. If it’s what you want, I’ll do it."
Alaric was a bit shocked; he didn’t expect her to suddenly do a total 180.
Until she added,
"But if I’m going to help you, then you have to take me along the whole way. I won’t accept you using me and tossing me to the side."
Alaric couldn’t tell what was going on in her mind. His main reason for telling her any of that was so he could get her to join him in the first place, so in a way, it worked in his favor.
"Very well. I accept."
Fiona smiled through the sadness on her face. "You don’t have to carry all the burden on your own. Fiona will help you; she wants to."
"Why are you suddenly speaking in third person?" Alaric sat down at the table and began to read the letter in his hand.
His eyes moved from left to right.
After a while, he rested his back on the chair, his focus now on the ceiling.
According to what was written in the letter, most of the troops from the Forgeno region had shown up in the Montclair Barony, including Meren and her diamond-ranked knight, Lay Everton.
Apparently, they planned to advance from there towards the north and ambush Dergen’s army before they could get past the northern borders.
In all honesty, Alaric knew Meren would most definitely win the war.
Not only did they have stronger soldiers—with people like Velmo, who believed his subordinate was killed by one of Dergen’s men, and Ava—they also had Meren, who was a perfect leader and the wielder of the holy sword Excarbon.
Dergen, on the other hand, focused more on numbers than actual strength—quantity over quality.
As such, Alaric planned on helping him turn the tides.
As of this moment, Laura and Aurora were over at Dergen’s army, making due arrangements for Alaric to come strike a deal with him.
If Alaric got involved in the war, he could easily turn the entire thing in his favor.
Even though his former plan was to prevent the war, he still intended to do everything in his power to incite fear into the hearts of the people.
"Yeah... sooner than I thought," he whispered to himself before squeezing the paper and throwing it to the side.
"Carrier, how many cp left?" he asked.
[Current cp: 800cp.]
"It’s dropping; that means it’s working."
Alaric stood up from the chair.
"Keep it going. I’ll send someone to come check up on you in case you need anything. I’ll be back." He stormed out of the room.
