Reincarnated as a Genius Mage-Chapter 50: The Snake Fang
Chapter 50: The Snake Fang
A wooden building. It’s normal sized, and it’s not too large. I can see low light shining through the window inside the building. It’s probably candle light.
Quickly— I advance. My heart’s beating fast as I scout their perimeter. No one’s here, no guards or anything.
These guys are really sloppy.
As I get closer to the main door— I hear their voices; low, almost like whispers, but audible.
"The captain really doesn’t know when to stop. I know his ideals are good, but the way he’s going about them— it’s not the the rig—"
"There you go again. You little goody two shoes.. what do you think the snake fang gang exists for in the first place?"
"We used to have ideals! To revolt against the nobles! But now we’re no better than them. We’re nothing more than ravagers.. look how we messed up that man’s house, just because he was a noble. And worse thing, I heard he invested stocks or whatever In the mercenary guild, so what if he reports to them and we become hunted by mercenaries, huh?"
The two deep male voices— It sounds like they’re arguing about something, and their voices fluctuate from low whispers to audible yells.
"Oh, so now, not only are you against the Captain’s ideal, but you’re also a chicken too?"
In that moment— I kick the door; breaking it open. But I don’t step in.
"Huh? What’s that?! Who the hell did that?! Yo! Caire you see that? "One of the men yells, his voice shaky, evident of his shock.
"Yeah, of course I did, I ain’t blind!... Oi! Who the hell are you?!" The other one yells. His voice getting closer and closer as he walks toward the shattered door.
I’m hiding by the side— waiting for him to come close enough.
–Step – –Step– Shing!
It seems he unsheathed a sword.
"I’ll give whoever you are til the count of five!" His voice keeps approaching the broken down door slowly. And he’s only about two steps away now.
"One..."
He’s almost here.
"Two.."
Any second now.
"Thr—!"
Immediately his face crosses the door area to peep— my clenched fist lands on his nose— damaging his cartilage, and causing him to pass out.
And I drag his limp body outside with me. Taking his sword, and throwing it outside.
Hmm, as expected. No circle, no cluster, no orbs.
I deactivate my ’mana sight’ as I check him, and I stand at the door— waiting for the other guy.
Hmm, mana sight. That’s a good name.
"Huh? Caire? You found out who’s there yet?" The other one inside asks, it seems he was waiting for this one to confirm if someone’s here.
"C’mon man, it’s not funny.. get in." His voice starts approaching too.
"Caire?" Shing!
"Who’s.. who’s there?" His voice is low now, shaking too.
Just one more step. Come.
"Whoeve—"
Crack!
I twist his neck. And immediately, he falls to the ground. Sword clinking on the ground as it falls.
And I drag his limp, collapsed body, and place it next to the first guy.
Hmm, these bastards are heavy. I wonder if anyone heard the scuffle. And.. just how many of them are in this building?
Well, only one way to find out.
Taking slow and cautious steps— I enter the building.
There’s nobody in the living room. Just two large wooden sofa-like chairs puffed with foams, and a round wooden table.
"There’s no way the people in here in this house didn’t hear the sound of the door getting crashed, is there? Now, where are they? Or are they not here?" I mutter.
A door stands beside the wooden sofa— not too far from me. And I tip toe.. heading toward the door slowly.
My palm clenches on the rough door knobs— and I open it. It’s open.
Inside.. oh, it’s just the kitchen.
There’s a staircase that leads upstairs.. I’d check the rooms there, and search for the captain.
And then I walk out of the kitchen.
–Flash!–
Oh, shit.
They turned on the chandelier, and the light shines throughout the living room.
As I scan the room— I see various men, upstairs— holding the wooden stair rails, all looking down at me with murderous, bloodshot glares.
And down here in the living room— about ten.
If I count both the number upstairs, and the number downstairs.. they’re about.. Fifty? Wow.
"What do we have here?" A deep, gruff voice echoes. And a man wearing a blue leather jacket that extends til his thigh region walks down the stairs slowly.
His eyes— they’re covered by some kind of black blindfold. And he has a top hat on his head. I think he’s their leader.
"Seems like we’ve got a rat." He says.
"The rat even managed to take down Caire and Golei." One of the men screams.
All the men gathered.. they’re all silent. Only these two are talking.
The one I presume to be their leader arrives downstairs.. and he starts moving slowly toward me.
And I activate my mana sight.
I see..
He has one moonlight colored orb-like ball— as small as a pingpong— revolving around him.
And the others are all manaless.
It seems I miscalculated. They have one swordsman who’s felt mana, and has ’cultivated’ it or whatever they swordsmen call it.
"Tell me, masked rat. Who sent you? Is it the noble we attacked the other day? Or are you from the mercenary guild? Except, I doubt that a kid like you would be from the mercenary guild." He speaks, his voice’s low and hostile.
"Captain, I told you attacking that man might bring the wrath of the mercenary guild." The other one speaks up.
"And where is the wrath?" He asks. And then he points at me, "this shrimp?"
A sigh leaves my mouth.
"Are you the captain?" I ask. My voice cool and calm.
He raises his brows, "he really sounds like a kid." And then he lets out a small, dry laugh, "unsheathe your swords." As soon as he says this,
every man in the room... Shing!
"And if I am, kid?"
