Reincarnated As A Dragon With Cheats-Chapter 31: New Life (2)
Chapter 31: New Life (2)
"It broke during the battle."
Tears rolled down Adam’s eyes when he heard that. He did not utter a single word. His lips quivered, but he remained mostly silent.
His eyes turned red as he tried to rub them, to wipe the tears away, but they kept flowing.
It had been his last chance to see his daughter.
And now that chance was gone.
"Well... I... thanks..."
He stood up with great difficulty. His body swayed from side to side before he finally stabilized.
"Thank you for saving my life. I... I will..."
Pebbles knew the man was broken inside. He could see it plainly. But he did not understand that feeling. He had never felt it himself.
So he dismissed it as trivial.
"You look frail. I hope you eat proper food."
"I... I... will...", the man gave a faint smile while scratching his head, then turned around and started walking away.
Nightstone stepped forward.
"He’ll die if we let him go."
Pebbles slowly turned his head toward her. The Graver nodded in agreement and so did Azeth.
Pebbles remained unmoved.
"Then so be it. That is fate."
The Graver froze. The lizard he had just thanked... was he truly this heartless?
Azeth’s head twitched slightly at those words, but he remained silent. He believed his master must have a reason.
Nightstone did not believe that.
She did not overthink it.
"Master, that man is broken inside. He is experiencing everything at once. Fear. Anxiety. Confusion. Grief. If we leave him like this, he will truly die."
Pebbles frowned slightly.
Why did she care about a human she had just met?
If anything, should she not hate them?
Humans hunted monsters daily. For money. For pride. For entertainment. They tortured them. Paraded them in tournaments. Killed them for applause.
Knowing this, Pebbles spoke plainly.
"Humans are not our allies. It does not matter how much they suffer. Why should I go out of my way to help..."
He stopped mid-sentence.
There were tears gathering beneath Nightstone’s goggles, clearly visible to him.
"Nightstone... are you crying? Did I..."
She spoke without hesitation.
"Would you abandon someone you could save, just because you think they are not worth being your friend, Master?"
Her voice trembled.
"You would not do that twice... would you?"
The words struck him directly in the chest.
He wanted to chase behind her, but after hearing something like that, he couldn’t move.
He simply watched as Nightstone turned and ran back toward the first floor, tears trailing behind her.
Pebbles lowered his head.
"But I am not human... so why should I care for them?"
He had only muttered it under his breath, but it made him uncomfortable.
With his head lowered, he asked quietly, "System, is there a ring in the shop that could resurrect people?"
Ding!
[Negative. There is a similar item called Ring of Reversal that can bring a dead being back to life, but it only works if the being has been dead for less than an hour.]
Pebbles sighed. It was impossible to do anything of that sort. But he could at least comfort the man, so he did what he had come to do.
"You," he called out to the Graver with the hat and asked a simple question, "can you stay with the human for a longer period?"
The Graver spoke softly. "Forgive me lord lizard, but I don’t think I have much time for that... maybe an hour, but no more."
Pebbles chuckled.
He pulled out the shaman’s body from his inventory and laid it in front of them.
Then he took out a small fragment of the Crystal of Life.
"Possess this body and use this item. I’m sure you will lead a long life."
The moment the Graver saw this, he was left awestruck.
"Wait, really?"
Anyone would have asked the same question.
What Pebbles was doing right now was extending the Graver’s time in the land. Except for a few noble beings and Supremes, none could do that.
While he wasn’t doing it directly, his idea would work.
The Graver instantly possessed the bones while Pebbles placed the fragment between the ribs. It became a makeshift heart.
It took some time, but the Graver woke up. Now the hollow sockets of the skeleton glowed with blue light.
Ding!
[You have given a Graver a new life.]
It was amusing to Pebbles because the Graver said the same thing.
"Lord Lizard, this... I... I can move. I have a body... and this energy."
He bowed and spoke again, "Lord Lizard, you have given me a new life. Please give me a name. I will forever be your servant."
Ding!
[Name the Undead Graver.]
Pebbles thought for a second and then leaned forward, whispering the name softly.
The skeleton was surprised when it heard it. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
The glow in its eyes changed. If it had been blue before, it now turned red. It had also grown slightly larger.
"This name... I..."
It was a name that had once been taken from him.
He had been killed because of it.
In the world of Eldrich, where words held power, having a name was more significant than anything else.
Especially if that name belonged to a great being.
Three things could happen if you assumed a name similar to another’s.
First, the stronger being would naturally dominate the fate tied to that name.
Second, if that being were immortal, you would die almost instantly.
Third, you could become a puppet in their hands or their vessels.
However, mistakes could happen. So when someone attempted to give a similar name, the world would first seek confirmation.
[Would you like to name the Undead Graver: Billie]
[Note: It was the maiden name of a Supreme who loved Nature.]
[Yes] / [No]
Pebbles did not react immediately.
He was unsure whether he should use that name. He had read it earlier on the trees the shaman had marked, but he had dismissed it as insignificant.
Yet by coincidence, when he was thinking of a name, the dungeon spoke.
[[Do not think too much. Just name him Billie]]
Pebbles gave a small smile and nodded. "Yes."
Memories flooded the Graver’s mind as he recalled his past. This time, he did not forget.
He remembered his name and everything else clearly.
For a fleeting moment, he looked at his bony palm and then raised his gaze to meet Pebbles’ eyes.
"Lord Lizard..."
"You have history with that man, yes? Go. Help him. That is the task I give you."
The Graver bowed deeply, more than necessary, but it showed his gratitude.
He obeyed Pebbles’ command and rushed toward the man who was heading toward the small exit.
"Sir Adam!" Billie called out.
The first thing Adam felt upon seeing the skeleton move was fear. He flinched, thinking the shaman had returned to life.
Billie explained everything clearly and calmed him.
As for Pebbles...
Ding!
[Conditions met.]
[Would you like to make Billie your pet?]
[Yes] / [No]
Pebbles smiled.
’He was shackled in the graves for a long time. He just received a new life...’
He turned away. "No. Let him be free."
[You have denied making Billie your pet.]
Azeth merely smiled when he saw Pebbles smile and followed him back to the First Floor.
