Mrs. Jing didn’t care about Jing Yuan’s behavior. She was only focused on fulfilling her mission. It’s not that she had feelings for Jing Xiaonan, but rather that she had a task to complete. Once it was done, she could leave. The thought of her son acknowledging another man as his father for more than twenty years had made her nauseous.
If the man wasn’t the one she loved, she wouldn’t have gone to such extremes. Knowing he would never love her as much as she loved him, she still adored him devotedly, even deigning to lay under a man she didn’t love. Only she could understand the agonizing feeling this brought. Seeing Jing Xiaonan’s daughter acting this way before her marriage, Mrs. Jing felt a perverse sense of pleasure.
It’s hard not to say that the hearts of the Jing family members had grown cold. Each one exhibiting signs of psychological distortion, only Jing Xin remained sane, though he no longer seemed to reside here.
“It’s a bit cold, Mom, why are you up so early?” Jing Yuan nervously chuckled. Could she divulge that she spent the night rolling in bed with her son? Such a confession was out of the question. Instead, she had to make excuses.
“Well, you should go back and rest. Just don’t let it happen again,” Mrs. Jing replied, her words making Jing Yuan’s heart skip a beat. What did she mean? Had she been discovered? It seemed impossible, she’d been so cautious!
“Alright, Mom, I’ll go to my room. You should go back and get some more sleep, too.” Jing Yuan just wanted to leave, the sensation of being seen through by her mother was too overwhelming.
...
“Hmm, you should go,” Mrs. Jing surprisingly agreed, letting her go without a fuss.
“Peng’er, come here.” Jing Peng only entered after Jing Yuan had left but was called out as soon as he was through the threshold.
“What is it?” Ever since discovering his mother’s true nature, Jing Peng had stopped calling her “Mom”.
“Where were you last night? You didn’t come home at all,” Mrs. Jing queried, realizing that she and her son had grown distant. It had been a long time since he’d called her ‘Mom’. She’d asked him numerous times, but he always dismissively replied that if he didn’t want to call her, he wouldn’t. She stopped asking him after he lost his temper over it once.
“It’s none of your business,” said Jing Peng, retreating to his room. He had spent the previous night exerting himself and was now exhausted and wanted to sleep.
Seeing her son in such a state, Mrs. Jing felt a wave of sadness. Was it karma for how she treated other people’s children, that her own child treated her so poorly?
After returning to her room, Jing Yuan pondered over what she should do next. Once she figured it out, she closed her eyes and slept until noon. After freshening up and eating, she left the house and didn’t return until late in the evening. After dinner, she retrieved to her room again. Her mysterious routine left Jing Peng without an opportunity to ask about her wellbeing.
As soon as dawn broke the following day, Jing Yuan left the house, dressed in stylish attire. She had gathered enough information yesterday. Today she had a clear purpose – to meet Jing Xin.
Jing Xin came back late last night. They always had a day off after finishing a mission. He hadn’t seen his wife and son for many days and had headed into town immediately after reporting back and taking a shower in the dorm. His wife usually stayed in town with their son, so he had to go into town to see them, but when he arrived, they were already asleep. Yet, he had come to see them and couldn’t bear to wake up his wife or else he’d have been forced to spend the night outside.
The surprised expression on his wife’s face when he woke her had made him chuckle. After washing up, he had slept with his wife and son and woke up early to cook them breakfast. He was still cooking when he saw his sister, Jing Yuan, show up.
