Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man-Chapter 128 - 56: No Shame in Admitting You’re Afraid of Pain
"Oh my goodness! Fourth Wife of Jing, what are you doing?" Second Auntie had come to the Jie Family home to make lunch, and her expression changed the moment she saw Qin Mei in the courtyard. "Fourth Wife of Jing, you’re in your post-miscarriage confinement! How can you be out here in the courtyard in the wind? And look, you’re not even wearing a hat! Women in confinement are the most delicate. It’ll be terrible if you develop chronic problems from this. And you, Jing Si! You’re not even trying to talk some sense into your wife? How can you have the nerve to just sit there reading? If she gets sick, she’ll be the one suffering, but you won’t have an easy time of it either."
Jie Jingchen glanced at Second Auntie, then looked at Qin Mei, and finally said with a troubled expression, "Second Auntie, she’s very headstrong. She doesn’t listen to me."
Holding a medicinal herb, Qin Mei looked up at Jie Jingchen. ’Is he trying to shift the blame to me?’
"So just because she doesn’t listen, you let her do whatever she wants? That’s just reckless! You young people always let our advice go in one ear and out the other," Second Auntie chided irritably.
Qin Mei gazed at Jie Jingchen, a foxy smile spreading across her face. "Jie Jingchen, you could actually try persuading me. I might even listen."
Jie Jingchen’s brow furrowed. His gaze flickered, and he pressed his lips together, saying nothing.
Second Auntie was just a neighbor, so as an outsider, she couldn’t scold them too much. She simply said to Qin Mei, "Fourth Wife of Jing, hurry back inside and lie down."
"Second Auntie, I’m preparing some medicine for myself to help my body recover," Qin Mei said.
Hearing her mention recovery, Second Auntie glanced at the pile of herbs in front of Qin Mei and asked doubtfully, "But don’t they say a doctor can’t treat themselves?"
Qin Mei didn’t refute her, replying tactfully, "It’s true that a doctor can’t treat their own illness, but there’s no problem with preparing medicine to help the body recover."
"All right, then." Second Auntie stopped trying to persuade her. "Once you’ve prepared the medicine, you go back inside and rest. I’ll brew it for you."
"No, thank you. I’ll brew it myself," Qin Mei refused. ’She had just been trying to placate the woman, but Second Auntie had actually taken her seriously.’
"You don’t trust me?" Second Auntie looked a little hurt.
"It’s not that," Qin Mei denied. After a moment’s thought, she explained, "The medicine I’m preparing is special. You have to pay close attention to the heat, and more ingredients need to be added partway through. If it’s not controlled properly, it could be counterproductive."
Since Qin Mei had put it that way, Second Auntie had no choice but to drop the matter and head to the kitchen to cook for them.
Qin Mei went back to working on her herbs, while Jie Jingshan and Jie Jingchen continued to read.
When the meal was ready, Second Auntie called them to eat. Qin Mei invited her to stay and eat with them, but Second Auntie declined.
There was a soup, a vegetable dish, and a meat dish. The rice was portioned for exactly three people. ’No wonder Second Auntie refused to eat with us.’
After lunch, Jie Jingshan went to her room for an afternoon nap. Jie Jingchen kept Qin Mei company for a little while, but when he saw he wasn’t much help, he decided he might as well go take a nap too.
「An hour later.」
"Jing Si," a strange man’s voice called from outside the courtyard.
Qin Mei was grinding herbs into powder at the stone table in the courtyard. Hearing someone call for Jing Si, she didn’t even look up as she yelled, "Jie Jingchen, someone’s here for you."
"You must be our sister-in-law, right?"
Qin Mei looked up to see an unfamiliar man, carrying a gift in one hand and helping a heavily pregnant Su Kexin over the threshold with the other. Her gaze flickered. ’This must be Su Kexin’s husband, Wu Yingxiong.’
"Doctor Qin," Su Kexin called out as Wu Yingxiong placed the gift on the stone table.
Qin Mei froze for a moment. ’Doctor Qin? That title sounds so unfamiliar. Before I transmigrated to this era, I was still studying diligently. Even years after graduating from medical school, no one had ever respectfully called me Doctor Qin.’
"Sister Ke Xin, please, just call me Qin Mei," Qin Mei said with a smile. Seeing that Jie Jingchen still hadn’t come out, she stopped what she was doing, dusted off her hands, and said to Wu Yingxiong and Su Kexin, "You’re here for Jie Jingchen, right? I’ll go get him."
