Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man-Chapter 100 - 48: Craving Wolf-Tooth Potatoes
Jie Jinghun and Jie Jingchen both remained silent.
Jie Jinghun had married Shen Qing. If Shen Qing were like Xu Chunyan, his relationship with Mrs. Xie would probably be even worse.
Qin Mei couldn’t help but chime in, "She really is a shit-stirrer."
"A shit-stirrer?" Mrs. Xie paused, glancing sideways at Qin Mei before smiling in agreement. "She really is a shit-stirrer."
Qin Mei looked at Jie Jingchen and Jie Jinghun. They didn’t say a word. ’Is their silence a form of agreement?’
Mrs. Xie sighed and complained, "Sometimes, I just don’t understand Xu Chunyan. She drives a wedge between Jing Er and me, encourages him to be difficult, and is constantly picking fights and provoking me. And yet, she still expects to get money from me. The ways Xu Chunyan comes up with to ask me for money are just bizarre. I know she has a malicious heart, but I still give her the money. That includes when her mother comes over to cause a scene. Every time she shows up and makes a fuss, I give her money."
Ever since Xu Chunyan married into the Jie Family, both she and her husband had jobs, but they hadn’t spent a single cent on the household. Mrs. Xie covered all the family expenses. You could say they were living on her dime while saving their own money, and Xu Chunyan still couldn’t stand the sight of her.
Bringing her mother over to make a scene—every time they caused a fuss, she gave them money. Over the years, the amount she’d given Liu Guihua was enough to cover the Xu family’s grocery bills.
Qin Mei didn’t bluntly point out Mrs. Xie’s mistake. Instead, she chose her words carefully for a few seconds before saying, "A wolf’s hunger is insatiable. You can’t feed it till it bursts."
The speaker’s words were pointed, and the listener took them to heart.
Mrs. Xie looked at Qin Mei in astonishment, her mouth opening and closing. Finally, she pressed her red lips together tightly and didn’t retort.
’If I hadn’t been so free with my money at the beginning, if I hadn’t given them a taste of it, their appetites wouldn’t have grown bigger and bigger with each feeding, until they became insatiably greedy.’
Qin Mei added, "Money isn’t everything. It just happens to solve most of your problems."
Every word Qin Mei said struck a chord deep in Mrs. Xie’s heart. She was emotionally stirred, and she grew even more fond of this daughter-in-law.
"Xiao Mei, we’re going back to Xiangjiang tomorrow," Mrs. Xie said suddenly. She was eager to arrange a meeting between her parents and Qin Mei.
Qin Mei froze. ’I haven’t even familiarized myself with Shijiu City, and now we’re off to Xiangjiang? Is this a vacation or something?’ She could barely handle train rides, let alone traveling by ship.
"Mom, my wife gets motion sickness on trains and ships. It’s not a good idea for her to go with you to Xiangjiang to take refuge," Jie Jingchen’s deep voice carried a trace of coldness.
"Take refuge? Jing Si, what nonsense are you spouting?" Mrs. Xie furrowed her brow. "I’m taking your wife back to Xiangjiang to meet your maternal grandparents."
"This time, Second Sister-in-law’s mother suffered a huge loss at the Jie family home, and you also crippled her brother. The Xu family won’t let this go." A vicious glint flashed through Jie Jingchen’s amber eyes.
Qin Mei’s heart trembled. Her slender, pale fingers twitched. Xu Chunwang’s jaw still hadn’t been set. The thought of his lecherous gaze made her stomach churn.
"Hmph!" Mrs. Xie snorted, then laughed arrogantly. "Hilarious. As if I would be afraid of the Xu family. A mere Xu family is nothing to me."
’If I weren’t Jie Jingwei’s stepmother, and if Xu Chunyan weren’t his wife, could the Xu family even touch me?’
Jie Jingchen raised an eyebrow, a mocking smirk playing on his lips. "Then why are you still going back to Xiangjiang to take refuge?"
"It’s not taking refuge, it’s taking Xiao Mei back to Xiangjiang to meet your maternal grandparents," Mrs. Xie corrected. ’Xu Chunwang insulted Jing Si and assaulted Qin Mei with his eyes. Crippling him was getting off easy. In the old days, I would have just had him killed.’
"Mom, Qin Mei is treating Jing Qi’s leg." Raising a hand, Jie Jingchen pinched the bridge of his nose and reminded her.
Mrs. Xie froze for a second, then it dawned on her. She patted her forehead. "Oh, good heavens, I almost forgot about that."
"Mom, Jing Qi’s leg treatment can’t be interrupted. It’s not advisable to travel long distances during the treatment period," Qin Mei took the opportunity to say. She really was resistant to going to Xiangjiang; she was afraid of trains and ships.
Mrs. Xie was a doctor herself, so she understood immediately. She said guiltily, "Treating Jing Qi’s leg is what’s important. I was being too hasty."
Mrs. Xie gave up on the idea of taking Qin Mei to Xiangjiang to meet her parents. It had been a spur-of-the-moment idea anyway. She had a critically ill patient at the hospital, someone with high status and power, so she couldn’t get away.
Back at home, Mrs. Xie went to her room. Jie Jingchen told Qin Mei to go to their room first, then he and Jie Jinghun drove off.
When Mr. Xie saw Mrs. Xie return safely, the heart that had been hanging in suspense finally settled. "How did it go? Did you manage to buy it?"
Mrs. Xie shook her head as she unwrapped her scarf. "No, it won’t be available for another month."
A flicker of disappointment crossed Mr. Xie’s eyes, but he still feigned nonchalance and comforted her, "It’s fine. We’ve waited this long, another month is nothing. Why are you back so late?"
Mrs. Xie hesitated for a few seconds, but decided to tell the truth. "We ran into the patrol..."
"The pat—" Mr. Xie cried out in shock, but Mrs. Xie immediately clamped a hand over his mouth.
