Reborn in another world as a Hermaphrodite-Chapter 145: Finding Katherine
When the study session finally ended, the sky outside was already completely dark.
Luqing was inside the kitchen, cooking dinner, while Meiya was sitting at the table right before Alex and his two sisters.
"So... You're telling me Katherine is gone?" Amelia asked, rubbing her ear as if she heard the wrong thing.
All three of them nodded, causing Meiya to sigh as she took out a small little device from her pocket.
It was a small square case with several buttons, similar to a certain device Alex had seen in his previous life.
The more he thought of it, the more he felt he had seen the item before as Meiya started pressing the buttons.
"Miss Meiya, what is that thing?" Mary curiously asked the question that all three of them had been wondering.
"It's a Chatterglass. Your mom gave it to me in case we need to contact each other."
As a visible screen showing a list of names suddenly appeared in the case, Alex immediately realized the chatterglass was a cell phone.
"Huh. She's not picking it up... Crap."
Seeing the screen disappear, all three of them looked a little disappointed.
"Wait, how did your guy's mom suddenly go missing? I thought Katherine brought you guys back for your grandparents' birthday."
"I can explain it..."
Ten minutes later...
"So you're telling me your mom went to look for your grandma, then the entire city was suddenly haunted?"
Sophia nodded as Luqing started putting down plates of food on the table.
"And after a night of haunted ghosts, you guys were sent back home alone and haven't seen your parent ever since?"
This time, all three of them nodded as Meiya started to realize how serious the situation was.
"She said you guys come back if she doesn't come back the day after, right?"
"Yeah..." Sophia quietly answered.
"I... As might as I want to help you guys, I don't think I can really do much to find her."
Meiya's answer immediately disappointed all three of them, but Alex noticed she wasn't finished talking yet.
"But since your mom told you guys to go home first, she probably knows what she has to go through to save your mom."
After a moment of silence, Alex was the first to accept their situation, and Sophia soon followed suit.
"Is there really no way we can help to find Mom?" Mary worriedly asked, still a little stubborn about doing something.
"There's no way to find a mage if their chatterglass isn't working." Luqing suddenly chimed in before sitting down.
"Really?" Meiya asked in a little surprised tone.
"Yeah... Chatterglass works across every place in the world unless it's in a different dimension.
I had seen Master Fredrick use one of those to their friends... And that friend happened to be on the other continent."
"No wonder why she gave me this as a parting gift." Meiya quietly murmured as she looked down at the rectangular box.
Alex quickly realized Katherine's intent: to be able to call Meiya on the other continent when they return in the summer.
This thought only made him more worried.
It almost seemed like Katherine was already planning all these ahead of time, knowing she might disappear one day.
"I'm sure your mom will be fine. She's probably the hardest mage to kill... Ahem, let's start eating before the food gets cold."

As Luqing stayed behind to clean up the table, Meiya quickly sent all three of the kids to take a shower.
Even though it was only nine o'clock, all three of them were sent back to their bedroom after the shower.
On his bed, Alex's eyes were closed. But he wasn't asleep yet. Rather, his mind was trying to call Sarah.
Yet, there was not a single response. Every attempt to enter the inside world was blocked off.
It was clear she just didn't want to see him in particular, as he could still feel her presence over his body.
"Sarah, answer me. I just want to ask a little question."
"Miss Sarah. Please. I know I have been demanding a lot, but I'm really worried for my mom's safety."
As all of his voices go into the blank darkness, Alex gives up and slowly pulls the blanket back up.
His mind was starting to feel tired from all the things that had happened in the last two days.
The Katherine situation, the contest taking place tomorrow on Monday, the final exam on Wednesday, and all of the studying before it.
"One at a time, Alex. One at a time..."
Slowly, Alex drifted into sleep as everything turned into darkness... Until a light suddenly appeared.
He immediately opened his eyes back up, looking around only to find himself still in the bedroom. However, the bedroom was no longer the same one he was in before he went to sleep.
Instead, it was the old house before it was renovated, the one where he was sharing the same bed as his two sisters.
"Why am I back to this? Sarah? Answer me."
Despite asking it out loud in the room, there was no answer for him. Only silence echoed throughout the room.
Getting up from the bed, Alex immediately felt everything was frozen. None of the leaves outside moved a single bit.
There was zero wind outside the window, the complete opposite of what he had experienced in the past.
He could feel a hint of emptiness outside, an empty void of nothingness, almost like a static picture. Even as he opened the window and stuck his hand out, he couldn't feel any kind of breeze blowing past.
Moving his hand back inside, he slowly walked over to the door before opening it.
There was no one in the hallway, the bathroom, or Katherine's room.
In the living room, all of the furniture was neatly put in place, and it looked the same as every other time he had entered this world.
"Mom? Is anyone here? Hello?"
Despite calling it out loud, there was no response—only echoes from the other two rooms.

As Alex walked over to the kitchen, no one was inside. Next, he walked over to the storage room.
Once again, no one was there. The house was just empty as he opened the door to the backyard.
His pupils immediately started to widen, unable to believe what was right before his eyes.
A tall, cloaked figure was standing right in the distance—their direction looking in the other way.
"Mom? Is that you?"
As Alex's voice traveled to the other side, the cloaked figure turned around and revealed themselves to him.
"Mom!"
"Alex!"
With a warm hug, he finally felt warmth radiating off her body as she gently brushed his hair with her hands.
"Mom, where did you go?"
"I had always been here. What do you mean, where did I go?" Katherine quietly asked as the two of them sat down on the bench.
Alex fell into silence, his mind stuck in a dilemma. He couldn't really ask the question he wanted from her.
If he asked where she was in real life, it would expose him as the 'real' Alex rather than just a copy of Alex she created in her dream.
"Alex, is everything going okay at home?"
"Yeah... Wait——"
As Alex turned his head up to look over to Katherine, his face was in complete shock.
"Mom, y-you know I'm the real Alex the whole time?" Alex nervously asked.
"What do you think, you silly? Do you really think I would create a clone of you in my dream?"
Seeing Alex nodding in agreement, Katherine let out a hmph before knocking her knuckles onto his head.
"Ouch!"
"Don't try to make me mad, okay? I'm not that happy right now."
As Katherine's voice turned a little grumpy, Alex immediately realized Katherine was facing some serious problem.
"Mom, what's making you unhappy?"
"What do you think? Mr.Genius?"
Katherine paused for a second before shifting her angry tone out of the conversation as her warm, normal attitude returned.
"Mommy is stuck on a task right now. I can't explain it to you, okay?"
Alex nodded again, not asking any further as he continued to let Katherine rub her finger all over his hair.
"Mom... When are you going to come back home then?"
"Next week... No later than before the month ends." Katherine answered with a hint of uncertainty in her voice.
Alex didn't say anything back, opting to stay silent as the world around them seemed to have returned to normal.
The cold breeze blew right onto the nearby leaves as it rattled the backyard, with the trees swooshing along with the leaves.
"Alex, you feeling cold?" Katherine quietly asked as the outside started to get a little windy.
"A little bit," Alex answered as goosebumps started to pop up around his elbows.
"Let's go back inside then."
As Katherine grabbed onto Alex's hand, the two slowly walked back to the house before closing the door behind them.
