Chapter 168: Two husbands?

Amelia sat on the bed of the separate room she was given and looked at the clock on the wall with an expectant gaze.

According to what she knew, she would turn eighteen right after 5:35 pm.

It was already 5:30 pm.

Her nerves were all over the place as she remembered her father’s words about how she might find her wolf on her birthday.

Time passed. The clock ticked at 5:35 and then 6:35. Amelia kept waiting, eagerly looking at her mark, hoping for a signal or some kind of weird feeling in her mind or chest.

However, nothing changed.

Disappointment flashed on her face, and she kicked the carpet in frustration. Why did she even expect that she would get her wolf immediately, like those lucky girls? It was beyond her.

She shook her head and was about to switch off the lights to go to sleep, not in the mood to interact with anyone and risk worsening her mood, when she remembered something—Grayson’s demise on her birthday.

She gulped, unsure.

Should she go and check up on him?

She might be a candidate, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t allowed to meet the family.

With this thought, Amelia stepped out of the room, her eyes locking with one of the Lunas who was here to compete. Her eyes were green, full of fierceness that would make anyone cower away from her in fear.

However, Amelia wasn’t like that, not anymore when she was constantly reminded by the mages to not bow to anyone or her powers would run wild.

She gave a curt nod to Luna, who reciprocated with a nod herself.

"Luna Crimson." She extended her hand.

Amelia walked ahead and shook her head firmly.

"Amelia Everleigh," she said.

Luna Crimson raised her brows, not expecting that.

"No rank?" She asked curiously.

Amelia didn’t feel ashamed of the question for the first time. If it had been her previous life, she would’ve looked away or at her feet in shame, but in this life, after finding her true identity, she took even more pride in being a prodigy healer.

And why not? She was a mage’s daughter, with rare golden blood flowing in her veins.

"Healer," Amelia said.

The surprise was evident in Luna Crimson’s eyes, but it wasn’t because she thought Amelia was of lower rank, but because she always thought the king hated healers with a passion. How could they allow the healers to participate? They were bound to lose at that pace.

"All the best," Luna Crimson said and turned to leave in the opposite direction.

Amelia didn’t wait in the corridor and walked towards the exit.

"Where are you going, candidate Amelia? The participants are not allowed to leave the premises or meet anyone," the guard at the base said, and Amelia raised her brows.

"I am well aware of that. But there are no rules that say a person can’t take a walk in the garden, are there?" Amelia asked.

The guards looked at each other before nodding and making way for her.

She walked to the garden, then looked at the large fences that prevented anyone from going outside or coming in.

It’s going to be tough for real. Amelia thought before sighing.

There has to be some way. She looked around, walking near the wall to find just any loophole or a way to climb the wall from some hidden spot without getting noticed.

A smile appeared on her lips when she noticed a chopped brick in the wall that would act as a perfect place to put her foot and jump on the other side if she acted carefully.

Amelia looked around before taking a deep breath.

However, as soon as she neared the wall and lifted her foot, someone placed their hand on her shoulders, and she nearly had a heart attack.

"Didn’t know you would want to sneak out to look for me so soon." The familiar voice made her pupils dilate, and she turned around in disbelief.

What the fuck? That was the first thing that came to her mind before she held the man’s hand and pulled him into the secluded corner behind a pillar.

"What are you doing here? Don’t you know this is a prohibited area? Only girls are allowed here. What if someone sees you?" Amelia nearly screamed, barely controlling her frustration at him.

Kyle looked at her for a few seconds before a smirk appeared on his face.

"It’s your birthday, baby. How could I miss it?" He asked. Without a warning, he leaned forward and placed his lips on hers before she could protest.

If it had been another time, Amelia would’ve pushed the man away for invading her privacy like this, but... how could she do it when every cell in her body was telling her that this was right, that she was in the arms of the right person?

Our mate. A voice in her head said, and Amelia jerked in her place, her heart skipping a beat.

She stepped back from Kyle in disbelief.

"Mate," she said.

Kyle raised his brows.

"You felt it too?" He asked, holding her shoulders in hope.

Amelia was about to answer his question when they were brutally interrupted by another presence.

"What do we have here?" The familiar voice asked, and Amelia closed her eyes.

Kyle held Amelia’s hand and pushed her behind him to protect her from the man’s wrath.

"She is not at fault here. I wanted to come and meet her on her birthday since she is my mate," Kyle announced daringly.

He didn’t care that their little relationship would be ruined after this. Since Amelia felt the bond too, he no longer needed to hide it from the world.

Cyrus tilted his head a little, his eyes turning amber as he looked at the girl hiding behind Kyle with a smirk.

"She is your mate?" He asked with a mocking smirk.

With large, dominant steps, he reached where the duo was standing and held Amelia’s hand, yanking her forward in a way that her chest collided with him while he looked down at her with cold, unyielding eyes.

"I don’t give two fucks whose mate she is. All I know is that she is mine," Cyrus said before he leaned forward and kissed Amelia’s lips before Kyle to prove his point.

Amelia, still reeling from the shock, felt her heart thump for the second time in the evening, for the same reason.

Our mate. The same voice spoke again, and Amelia closed her eyes in frustration.

"And you know why that is? Because she is my mate. When my wolf showed up and looked at Amelia, the first thing he said to me was that we were looking at our mate. How dare you claim her?" Cyrus pulled back from Amelia’s lips and glared at Kyle.

If Cyrus thought Kyle would back off just because he said those words, he was in for a bigger surprise, as Kyle didn’t even flinch at his glare.

Instead, he met his icy glare with a fierce one of his own.

"Well, bad news for you, she just acknowledged me as her mate," Kyle said.

"Doesn’t matter. She is mine. I know it; my wolf knows it. Does your wolf know it?" Cyrus challenged.

Kyle froze in his place at that blatant insult.

He probably already knew that Kyle never changed into his wolf because he didn’t have one. And strangely, even when he was born a werewolf, he was always attracted to blood, something that greatly confused him.

But that didn’t prove a point. He didn’t need a wolf to tell him Amelia was meant for him. His instinct was more than enough.

"How dare you!" Kyle snarled at Cyrus before jumping on him, grabbing his collar.

Amelia looked at the two guys who were ready to rip each other’s throats and couldn’t help but sigh.

So what Grayson said was indeed true.

"You don’t need to be scared of him, Amelia. I’ll handle him."

"I don’t care if he is your husband or the King. Let me deal with him."

"Stop it, guys. You both are my mates," Amelia said.

"Don’t be scared of—"

"It’s okay, sweetheart, I got you—"

Both men stopped talking simultaneously before looking at Amelia with wide eyes.

What did she say?

Amelia, who was looking at her feet in shame, looked up at the two men with a sigh.

"Remember, your grandfather went to meet a gypsy right after seeing your mark? The reason behind it was the same. Your mark says two wolves and fangs. You have one wolf. I will find mine soon, and the fangs..." Amelia didn’t need to elaborate on the rest.

"So what you are trying to say is that I have to share you with this man?" Cyrus looked at Amelia as if she spat venom, and Kyle scoffed.

"I was always supposed to have two husbands. That’s something your grandfather already knows. And if you both are my mates, it means..." Amelia didn’t dare to complete that sentence.

Cyrus held Amelia’s shoulders, his eyes dark and demanding.

"What does it mean?" Cyrus asked.

Amelia licked her bottom lip.

"That you two are brothers, the twins that your mother had. Kyle is the same twin brother that everyone thought drowned in that river that time," Amelia said.

Cyrus looked at Kyle in disbelief, unsure how to react.
