Chapter 63: The White Bunny

Cassandra had her chin resting on her knee. She wished to speak to Lotus and decided to ask Lana if she could send out a letter. She would finally answer her sister and it would certainly relieve some of her burdens.

She was still in a daze, pondering over what her life had turned out to be.

A loveless, childless commitment where she would most likely die a virgin. With no one to love her.

She wondered why she was paired with Siroos and why was his pack cursed. The dreams resurfaced in her brain and it suddenly clicked. Her heart woundedly clenched.

Those weren’t dreams, those were most likely memories. Memories from another life she had with Siroos.

They seemed happy in them, always smiling, him kissing her, lying in vast meadows, nestled among the flowers and butterflies. With snow-white bunnies hopping around.

Wait!

She was jerked back into reality when the cutest white bunny she had ever seen hopped inside her room.

Perplexed, her first thought was that it could be Siroos, shapeshifting. But the bunny was too fluffy and cute to be that rugged, virile hot-headed alpha who just broke her heart.

Cassandra loved bunnies; who wouldn’t? They were so adorable and fluffy. They were always sniffing for food, ravenous to find something to eat.

This bunny seemed to be doing exactly that. His focus was on the room and not Cassandra, sniffing here and there for anything to eat. His small paws and legs moved and his long ears stood erect as its eyes landed on the jar with dried strawberries Lotus had sent for Cassandra.

His stub of a pink nose twitched as Cassandra watched him mesmerised. Quietly like a stealthy cat, she moved from her bed and reached for the jar on the table alongside a jar of dates and waterskin.

Slowly opening the jar she took out a strawberry. They had been a gift from Lotus, knowing she was going to a dry area where they had no fresh strawberries.

Placing them on her hand she kneeled back on the floor and extended her hand for the bunny. He had crimson-shaded eyes which stood so starkly against his pristine white coat.

"Here! Little fellow. Sorry, I have no leafy greens or carrots to offer you," she gently called him, and a smile appeared on her tear-streaked face. All those harsh realities got pushed to the farthest part of her brain.

The rabbit hesitated; standing on its hind legs, it rubbed its face with its paws and opened its tiny little mouth so the cute little tongue would poke out.

This was cuteness overload and she couldn’t help but squeal out.

"Awww! You are so cute. Come, I won’t hurt you, tiny tot."

The bunny finally stopped scratching its face and obeyed. Hopping forward on its tiny little paws it ambled near her and began to sniff what she was offering.

Settling for the large dried strawberry he began to nibble on it.

Cassandra slowly extended her other hand so as not to startle it. Landing her palm on its head she began to pet him. It seemed so harmless and vulnerable. The bunny closed its eyes basking in her soft pats.

She wondered where it came from. It didn’t seem like a shifter and she felt no hostility from it. Siroos had said that most of the pack had animal spirits which could survive in the desert. This bunny seemed too fragile, too cute and just an animal.

"Where did you come from?" Maybe it was a pet. They had few kids and she had seen them play with pets. One of them had a cat, so it was likely. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"Were you too hungry? Do you want some water?" Taking her waterskin, which kept the water cool in this hot weather, she poured some on her hand and offered it to the little creature.

Its tongue flicked out, and it began to slurp it in tiny, adorable movements. Cassandra’s heart melted and she didn’t wish to part with this creature.

Once its miniature belly was full, it sat on its hind legs and watched Cassandra with its big red eyes.

"Come!" Cassandra lovingly smiled and offered her hand. He was quick to climb on it and moved to her shoulder. She climbed back on her bedding and it jumped into her lap and sat with its paws stretched out.

Cassandra sat with her back pressed against the wall and the little bunny had his head leaning against her belly.

Her hand constantly patted its head and back, feeling the silky softness of its fur and the rabbit hummed in satisfaction, its eyes closed basking in her affection.

The depressing thoughts and anxiousness that had invaded her heart subsided for now, replaced by the feeling of this tiny creature.

"Stay with me, little bunny. I am so lonely," she breathed out and slowly laid down. Only for it to swiftly climb on her chest and settle between her breasts. His small face rested right below her neck; its pink, coarse tongue poked out and licked her chin.

"Aww, is that a thank you?" Cassandra let out a slow chuckle. And it was the first one which was not forced in the last two days.

Seeing her smile, it did it again, making her skin tickle.

"You are ticklish, little one. You know I always wanted a rabbit just like you with a snow-white coat and red eyes. Instead, I got a dragon with black scaly skin with the same coloured eyes as you. Scary, right?" She chuckled again at the irony.

"But I like that dragon too. It’s a fascinating creature but the problem is, it lives inside someone who is not even mine and will never be. He tricked me and then broke my heart."

Cassandra’s lips downturned and her eyes welled up with tears again.

The little bunny shuffled closer and let out a wounded whimper as his face rested on her cheeks, soaking the tears into his snowy coat. Cassandra slowly hugged it and closed her eyes. Trying not to cry anymore, the sense of ease warmed her heart which this lovely creature brought with it.

She soon drifted off to sleep with it nestled safely in her arms. The eyes flickering between red and gold.
