Chapter 56: Snarky Cassandra

The feast they had prepared to be enjoyed after the ceremony was eaten by his pack without Cassandra. Siroos made a small speech explaining why Cassandra couldn’t attend.

Most pack members understood while some uttered the word and began to murmur.

"Daief (weak)"

"If I hear this word for my sister-in-law again from the mouth of anyone, it will be the last word you will ever speak," Faris warned with a murderous glare. All his joviality had disappeared as he heard them because of his proximity.

A wave of terror washed over them as they became silent and no one disrespected their Luna again.

Siroos was thankful for his brother. He could hardly chew anything and was lost for the most part. This was supposed to be a joyous occasion and yet had been stained because they couldn’t understand she was different from them.

"She will be fine. Like you said, our Luna is tough so don’t seem so glum," Faris teased, elbowing him under the shoulder. And he was back to his usual self.

Siroos only shook his head at his younger brother who always found humour in everything.

It was near dawn when Siroos was finally able to head back to his chamber.

He found his Gamma standing guard.

"Everything under control?" He inquired, pausing with his hand on the door.

Gamma Ames bowed and said.

"Yes! Alpha, I didn’t allow anyone to step inside."

Siroos placed his large hand on his shoulder and answered.

"Good, you can take a break now. Feed Shadow (Siroos’s horse)."

He nodded and rushed along while Siroos quietly entered his abode.

Lana was seated beside a sleeping Cassandra. She scrambled to her feet, seeing Siroos enter, and clasped her hands in front.

"How is she?" Siroos worriedly asked, seeing her chest rise and fall slowly. Lana seemed to have helped her change into a lighter garment for the night.

"She wished to rest and went to sleep after changing her attire and taking the medicine," Lana narrated.

Stepping closer to his sleeping mate he placed the back of his hand on her forehead. Her cheeks were turning unusually pink and her skin seemed to be hotter than it mostly was.

He grunted in displeasure.

"She seems to be getting a fever. Fetch me a woollen cloth and clay basin filled with well water," he ordered Lana, and without delaying, she rushed out of the room.

Siroos settled beside her, crossing his long legs and brushing away the few strands of hair from her face. There was a tiny grimace on her face as if she was in discomfort but the moment his fingertips grazed her inflamed skin, she eased down.

"You are strong, Malakti. Together we will cross all these hindrances."

Lana arrived with the clay basin and a cloth. Dipping and wringing it out she passed it to her Alpha. Siroos spread it on Cassandra’s burning forehead and she frowned in discomfort. The cool against her skin made her eyes flutter open and she yanked away the wet cloth from her forehead.

"No!" She cried out, trying to throw it away. Her mind was still sleepy and drugged from the medicine, and she was yet to understand what was happening.

But Siroos held it there with one hand and gently gripped her wrists with his other hand while Lana held the wash basin.

"Shh! It’s alright. You have a fever; let it stay."

Her senses fully awakened and her eyes found his concerned face.

"I am fine, can’t you let me sleep," Cassandra protested, trying to free her hands from his grip.

"You are not. I am letting your hands go but let me cool you down." Siroos slackened his hold on her wrists and she slipped them out of his hold, not wanting to be touched by him. She turned her face away.

Siroos sighed heavily seeing her reaction. She was angered with him, and he had to find out why, but only after she was feeling better.

"Fetch Fownso, tell him Luna has a fever," Siroos asked Lana.

"Yes! Alpha."

He could have mind-linked him but he needed a moment alone.

She placed the basin near Siroos’s feet and rushed out again. Using his index finger and pressing it against her cherry blossom cheek, Siroos tilted her face back towards him.

He found annoyance amidst all the other emotions and knew it was directed towards him.

"Talk to me about what’s bothering you. I know I promised I wouldn’t let you get hurt and will always protect you and yet I failed...."

Cassandra sent a seething glare his way, she could hardly contain herself and the lies this man spewed or the truths he hid.

"It’s not about that. I understand to be fully part of the pack I would need to accept every tradition. Irrespective of whether I like it or not. And I will. Rather it’s about YOU," she said the last word with contempt.

Siroos removed the cloth and dipped it in water again, cooling and wringing it. He carefully questioned.

"What about me?"

She found it highly annoying that he would act like that, knowing exactly what she meant. She gave him a silent treatment while he begged her with his gaze.

"Everything about you."

Cassandra answered while the door had a soft knock.

"Enter!" Siroos permitted with a sigh and Cassandra turned her face away yet again.

It was Fownso and Lana. They moved closer. The wise healer threw one look at the Luna and knew the temperature was the result of inflammation.

"Alpha! May I?" He respectfully took permission before getting too close.

"Yes!" Siroos permitted him while staying near Cassandra and helping her slightly straighten up. He placed two cushions behind her head.

"How are you feeling, Luna? Are you still in pain?" Fownso asked, reaching for the bandage and slowly opening it to inspect where they had burnt her.

"A little. My head feels dizzy, and my skin seems to have been put into an oven to be baked into a pie," Cassandra answered, trying to take a peek at her arm. Her sense of humour seemed to have spiked due to temperature and the medicine which had alcohol in it, making her bolder.

Siroos pursed his lips in order not to laugh at her comparison. He loved it whenever she was snarky. Lana held back a chuckle too. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

"It’s because of the inflammation. Regular application of the balm and some tonics will heal you in no time. Don’t worry," Fownso politely answered.

"I am not worried."

Although it had burnt like hell, a part of her was excited to see the mark and how it would turn out to be.

Fownso observed the skin was quite inflamed and would take a while to heal. He placed some more healing balm on the skin while Siroos continued to place the cloth on her forehead.

Fownso placed a fresh pair of bandages on her arm and then offered her a green tonic to drink.

Cassandra took it with a scowl and took a sniff. It smelled terrible as if something had died inside the tiny vial.

She took a small sip of the bitter liquid and her stomach churned. She hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday afternoon.

Cassandra felt sick and opened her mouth while turning to her right. Siroos was sitting there beside her trying to bring her temperature down.

His eyes drifted to her sickened face, and before he could move, Cassandra opened her mouth and puked into his lap.

All green and yellow and slimy.
