Chapter 115: Ch 115: Rules of Snakes and Ladders

"So, how are we going to do this? Are we all heading to the same location?"

Lilianna asked, taking a step away from Clara to walk into a ’safer’ space compared to before. Her eyes looked at Andrew for answers, and he quickly replied back to her.

"We should split up into teams and head to different locations. That way, our chances of winning would be maximized."

There was no information on what kind of game this was, but Andrew trusted his party. At least, he, Emperor, and Seraphina had a decent shot of winning any solo or team game. But concentrating their power into a single location did not seem to be worth it.

"Alright. But how are we going to distribute the player base?"

Clara asked, finally having calmed down. She still looked unhappy, but much calmer compared to before.

Lilianna stepped forward before anyone could and presented her case.

"I should go with Andrew. That will give us the best chance. Clara, you can go with Emperor. As for Seraphina... do you even need anyone on your side?"

Lilianna asked, stepping closer to Andrew. Her intention behind such a decision was not pure, and her heart beat faster and faster, reminding her that she was tricking everyone around her.

But she kept a confident expression on her face, not letting it show how much the current situation was bothering her.

Seraphina looked back at her with a knowing look on her face, and that made Lilianna’s heart beat even faster.

’Is she going to protest? Is Seraphina going to say anything about our current situation? Should I prepare an excuse?’

So many thoughts and excuses ran through Lilianna’s mind, but her mouth refused to speak any of them. She held Seraphina’s almost amused gaze before Seraphina nodded.

"It seems like a good idea. I will take anyone willing to go with me. The rest of you should take the kids and pair up as well."

"I will pair up with you."

Jenna immediately volunteered to go with Seraphina. She was sure that being by the side of someone this strong and fostering a good relationship would only benefit her.

"Alright, so it’s decided. Let’s head out. We do not have much time left."

Due to the enhanced bodies of all the players, it was far easier and faster to run to their respective locations.

The system had only given them 20 minutes, but that was more than enough time for everyone to reach the park.

__________

A lot of people had arrived for the game. Despite it being optional, the reward was too tempting for them to miss out on. So everyone wanted to try their hand.

But they suddenly felt like they had made a mistake as they watched Andrew and Lilianna stepping into the park as well.

"Tsk, I wanted to try my luck here, but I clearly chose the wrong park."

"If I knew that this was going to happen, then I would have chosen the other one. I don’t think a lot of people went there."

Whispers broke out around Andrew as tense eyes looked at him. People were trying to size him up and see if it was worth it to even try, or if they should back out now.

Before a decision could be made, the system timer hit 0, and any way to head back was blocked by red light with a warning sign on top of it.

[Welcome to the system’s minigame #2. I will now tell you all the rules.]

The system had a different personality compared to the first game, so it was obvious that someone else was in charge of this game compared to the first one.

It made people nervous, and they were no longer sure what to expect from this game.

[The objective — the last one standing.]

[All marked zones have been transformed into a giant board game of snakes and ladders. Players can roll their dice to advance either to a snake or a ladder tile. A stair is a safe zone, while a snake is a danger zone. Once rolled, players will remain on their designated spot until everyone has rolled their dice.]

The rules sounded a little complicated, and many players looked confused.

"Snakes and ladders? Like, that children’s board game?"

"Why are the rules so confusing?"

Seeing how people did not understand the game, the system immediately clarified and simplified the rules.

[Simplified game rules:

#1 — All players must roll a dice within 5 minutes of the timer. Failure to do so will result in elimination.

#2 — Once a dice has been rolled, players must get to their marked space within 2 minutes. Failure to do so will result in elimination.

#3 — Once on a chosen square, players must find another dice and wait for everyone to finish rolling (or wait for players to get eliminated) before rolling the new dice before the timer expires. Failure to do so will result in elimination.

#4 — The last one standing will be declared the winner. There can be only one winner.

#5 — Players are free to fortify and even attack other players to make them quit at any time. There will be no penalty, even if you give up halfway.

#6 — Use of tools and powers is permitted. But killing is not permitted. Killing a player will be deemed a failure, and you will be eliminated.

#7 — A total of 10 rounds will be played. If there are no winners by the end of 10 rounds, then no one will be declared a winner.]

The system rules sounded like a lot, but once they were broken down by the system, they sounded simple enough.

But the simpler they were, the more nervous they made the other players. Mainly because they doubted that they would be able to beat Andrew with their current power level.

’Should we quit now? That would be for the best, right? B-But maybe we have a chance? We can try playing it out a little...’

This was a game of chance, and no one wanted to lose the juicy system prize. So they all decided to play a few rounds, just to test their luck.
